      What’s the point in bringing out new groupsets when under the current climate you can’t buy the current groupsets?...
      It’s almost impossible to buy a full groupset from any of the main brands. Even buying single components is almost impossible.
      Should cycling groupset brands be concentrating on increasing production of current products so we actually have something to buy rather than new groupsets ?......🤔🤔

      i think its awesome from a capitalst stand point. The market is literally 3 companies to choose from. sram is forcing the hand of shimano. Good on them. ultegra di2 for over $2000? GTFO with that nonsense. Electronic shifting has been around for years at this point, if you dont try to remain competative, comapanies like sram will take your buisness. They certainly caught my eye with it.

I have only been able to ride it on any rides over 20 miles like 6 times so far this year...winter in Kentucky is NOT great for outside riding) BUT I will say I am so far LOVING this set up. It is smooth, it's deliberate and synching the front and rear derailleur for maximum efficiency going into climbs or whatever is amazing. I am already threatening several local PR segments and its only the first of March. This set up on a decent aero minded bike really is a leap forward....so who has a deal on some carbon wheels?? :)

      Yeah but it's weird for SRAM to offer this now, you can't get hold of any existing cycling products as it is. I'm in the UK and was in my local bike shops yesterday, they have 10 sets of Rival AXS on order and are told 1 is coming in June, 2 in August and they wont see the rest of that order until April next year. They also said timeframes are stretching out not contracting.
      I'm sure latest DA is ready, as it was due last year, but whats the point when things in cycling have a 3 year lifecycle and they wouldn't have been able to deliver many for the 1st year of that cycle. Shimano also had a fire at one of it's factories back in 2018 which had some effect and certainly didn't help. You might as well delay things until supply chains improve - I haven't been able to source DA hydraulic hose kits anywhere in UK, I have even had them on order from the big mail order stores in Germany and Spain and the estimates have gone back twice and it's been over 6 weeks waiting already, just for 2 hoses and some olives!!

    @Global Cycling Network you missed out on AXS web / the AXS app and the data it kicks out. Its one of the more interesting innovations where SRAM has really pushed the envelope. As an AXS user its helped me refine my choices for gearing, tire pressure, etc. Arguably its made a bigger difference for me than having 12spd vs. 11spd and definitely higher impact than wireless or electronic.

    When part of my work involves fixing (often flaky) computer issues, I sometimes get tired of how electronics and batteries don't tend to age gracefully. It's why my home computer has reverted back to a wired Ethernet connection and why most of my power tools are corded.

    First reaction is: Great! They are bringing electronic shifting to a more affordable price point! But when you think about it carefully, you will be paying £1500 for a groupset that weights 3kg... A disk brake bike in the £2500 range with this groupset will surely be around 10kg, and that sort of money would buy you a sub 6.8kg mechanical RED equipped bike a few years ago. Sure I agree with Si that midrange bikes nowadays can be extremely capable machines, but it is also true they cost the same kind of money top of the range bikes used to cost not long ago...

Do you need the whole shebang? Adding chain and cassette - yeah, ok. but some questions that have to been addressed, what rear hub specs are necessary for 12 speed cassettes, do you need a crankset, what BBs do the crankset fit? Mildly concerning if I was a customer with "some" money to spend.

Funny also that people in the comments here are quite keen on it, whereas the Shimano fanboys got proper stuck in on Cycling Tips. Affordable electronic shifting is a much needed step in the cycling industry. Far easier to maintain, very reliable now and all you need to do is make sure it's charged, can't be that hard. And hopefully it will lead to mechanical groups decreasing in price like Di2 did for Ultegra mechanical, that's a good thing.

      Looking seriously at this or Force.

    Everyone talking about costs and no one is listening to Si - no one buys a groupset in itself... so when you buy your next bike you have a choice
    example;
    Canyon Ultimate 105 = 2.4k
    Canyon Ultimate Rival Etap = MAYBE 2.5 or 2.6k ish
    Which would you choose?
    (If you say mechanical you are just wrong)

    • @mrvwbug4423
      @mrvwbug4423 3 года назад

      Which just means having to use Force or Red brifters. They assumed most buyers would likely opt for disc, so ditched the rim option to keep the development costs down. The rim brakes days are numbered, even Froome is on disc this year and seems to be a convert after riding rim his entire career before.

      @UCgMX35kJxzykZTGDJCx8P7w You’re kinda illustrating my point. Shimano is waaaay bigger than SRAM because they have multiple products over all price points with top quality manufacturing and have excellent r and d. This market domination allows them to spend money showcasing their products in the pro peloton. Campag and SRAM just do not come close. Campag can claim to be a “Boutique” brand happy with their staunch followers but neither pose any threat to Shimano’s dominance. I’m not at all happy with this as I prefer rim brakes and Shimano are steering us all toward unnecessary disc brakes in a Road bike application. 🤷🏻‍♂️

      Personally I REALLY hope Di2 stays wired. So much better than eTap and what is the hassle? If you buy your bike built up you don't have the hassle of building it. I build up all my bikes and it's easy to install. The one big battery on Di2 lasts so much longer and if you run out its your own stupid fault, I ride quite a lot and charge up every few months just to be sure and it's no less than about 60% when I do so

    Excellent vid Simon - as always very thorough and straight to the exact questions I have in mind! I agree with your analysis - looks fantastic and checks off a staggering number of wants / needs / must haves.......IMO this is the begging of the end of mechanical groupsets (yeah I said it!) especially when you consider how much easier it is to install and how immune it is from the (many) issues that come up with good old cables, including routing them at tight angles through new headset and handlebar designs that are clearly leading the charge these days. If you want to put everything inside a frame / make them completely out of view, Electronic groupsets are the way to go. Best new product from SRAM every IMO. The only question you didn't address that I think is especially pertinent these days: Availability and lead time!? I fear it will be very hard to get your hands on these sets than we care to discuss - even getting a chain from Sram these days is a 4-6 month delay for some models (the whole industry is reeling though admittedly - not picking on just SRAM of course). I want - but when can I have ?!?!?!?!

  • @sasha371
    @sasha371 3 года назад

    beautiful and would be useful if SRAM would make Rival as 11 speed with normal cassette and with rim brake option. I'd love to ditch cables on older bike (which I don't want to change) - but there is no options unless older eTap (still very expensive and looks like only 2nd hand these days).

    • @mrvwbug4423

      You could go 12 speed with just a driver change, if your hub has an XD-R option, or lace on a new hub with an XD-R driver. Assuming the bike uses the same rear axle width as modern 11 speed shimano.
