They should make an actual episode set in the future to prove that point. After all, Craig Bartlett himself did confirm that they are meant for each other, and that they do get married and have kids when they grow up.

Another thing to think about when talking about Helga and Arnold’s is her upbringing. Helga was raised in an environment filled with emotional neglect, where she was frequently ignored or worse and the two primary examples of what a romantic relationship should look like are Bob and Miriam. Who, when not sniping each other or going out of their way to avoid each other, drink and watch tv just to tolerate each other’s company.
Honestly, I find it far more believable that Arnold would not be attracted to Helga. I mean think about what happened with Iggy and have something like that happen on a near daily basis (Ok, maybe not that bad, but some of the **** Helga did to him...)

She straight up says she doesn't have a problem with him being small but is worried about being judged by others since she is tall and plus size while he is a small man, which goes down the path of being shallow. That's what upsets Ernie. And why he acknowledges that she doesn't have to be with him but is sad because she had a good time but is more focused on judgement from others. It's like if you went on a date with somebody and everyone had a good time but they reject a second date because of some physical features you have that they feel they'll be judged for by being seen with you. Now that person has no obligations to be with you but at the same time there's nothing wrong with you feeling sad that you got rejected over something like that
I wouldn't consider Helga & Arnold's relationship to even matter at this point. It wasn't until the Jungle Movie they even got together. Based on the awesome drawings and stories Craig Bartlett posted on his Instagram all throughout the early stages of the pandemic, Helga & Arnold seem to have a really healthy relationship.
Also Helga and Big Bob's relationship is quite toxic. They do have moments in which they bond, but for the most part that's due to their overly competitive natures, including their joint love of wrestling. Bob does occasionally remember he has a second daughter that he tries to bond with, but for the most part, he barely remembers he even has a 2nd child. They way Helga generally treats people, including Arnold, she the same way her father treats people, including his wife. Toxic indeed
As for Helga and Miriam, I'd put that in the lower Grey. Miriam literally remembers alot more than she's got "TWO" children and has alot more bonding moments with Helga. When she's hung-over or sleepy (which isn't often), she's a very competent and loving mother towards Helga, which always surprises and impresses Helga, and at least for a little while earns her daughter's respect and affection. Helga even calls her "Mom" during these times. Unfortunately, Miriam always tends to slip back in her depression, "smoothies" and other bad habits. She usually doesn't even clean or cook unless Olga's coming home or there. She makes efforts for Olga, but rarely makes efforts for Helga unless she's off her "smoothies" and has something to really motivate her. I agree, maybe without Bob, whom she confessed to giving up "everything" and all her younger accomplishments for, she' probably be a much better mother, especially if she had a job or even school to get her out of the house and motivate her.
@@cedricjones7560 Helga and Olga’s relationship has some positive traits, but it is not without its toxic issues. On the Positive Side: Unlike her parents, Olga has consistently made efforts to bond with Helga in every episode she and Helga interact together. And while her parents are usually motivated to bond with Helga due to external reasons (like for Miriam, when Bob isn’t around, she’s more inclined to spend time with Helga like in Beeper Queen and Road Trip. For Bob, its usually if he’s in a competitive event or self promoting himself, that he will ‘spend time’ with Helga), Olga genuinely wants to have a better relationship with her sister. Even though Helga can’t stand Olga most of the time, she was jealous of seeing Olga spending time with Lila in the Big Sis episode. Helga even later admitted that she didn’t want to share her sister with anyone else. So, on a couple occasions, Helga does express that she values having Olga as her sister and wants to have a better relationship with her. Lastly, Helga and Olga are at their most honest with each other when it is just the two of them. My personal favorite scene of Olga is when she tells Helga that she’s tired of having to be ‘perfect’ all the time for their parents, like a windup doll, and that she’s the lucky one for not having that kind of pressure. And Helga doesn’t belittle or clap back at her, but expresses thanks instead. On the Negative Side: Olga and Helga have very poor communication skills and do not keep healthy relationship boundaries. Olga does not listen to Helga, while Helga isn’t good at speaking her thoughts and feelings clearly and honestly to Olga. Whenever Helga does try to speak honestly, Olga dismisses her and doesn’t take what she says seriously. Olga chooses to see things as she would like, rather than see things as they are. This is why she is very reluctant to address the actual problems in her relationship with Helga and she never asks Helga what she thinks or feels, believing that she knows what’s best. Olga deals with problems by using a Can-Do attitude, believing that if she works hard enough and does all the right things, then everything will work out fine. On the other hand, Helga is resentful of living under Olga’s shadow and being overlooked by their parents, and on top of that, whenever something makes her uncomfortable, she pushes it away. This is why in most of their interactions, Helga shies away from Olga, shoves her away, or speaks in a sarcastic tone to her. Helga can’t stand to see Olga get positive attention from her parents or her peers. So instead of dealing with these feelings of jealousy in a healthy way, Helga tries to ruin things for her sister. Examples of this include: doctoring Olga’s report card by marking one of the A’s into a B+, almost letting Olga marry her fiancé, knowing full well that he was a con artist, trying to get Olga fired from her teaching job, and attempting several times to mess up Olga and Lila’s outings. So based off of this, if I were to rank Olga-Helga’s relationship, I would put it between the top to middle grey tier.
I can't stand Lila. I respect Arnold for telling Gerald's sister the truth and you can see he felt really bad about what he did and here comes Lila saying she was impressed and she also blamed him completely.
@@oooh19yea, it would have been interesting to see her acting like a normal person. Lila isn't "evil" but she is a bit of a jerk, she judges Arnold too much and she's a bit condescending. In the episode "Weird Cousin" Arnold was just comforting her with no interior motives , he was just being "Arnold". Then she told him to not touch her and that she only likes him, like girl he was only comforting you!? I think Lila is still bitter about Arnold rejecting her...
I always felt that Helga feels more admiration or adoration towards Arnold than romantic feelings, maybe in the future (after years of therapy) they would be healthy but as of kids they are definetily closer to a toxic relationship
I think Bob and Miriam were somewhat better when Olga was young. Miriam clearly sees what she should have been in her elder daughter (she even tells Olga not to make the same mistake she made when Olga plans to get married, which tells you a lot about how she wound up where she is) and Bob was just so proud of her. Once Olga left home, that was probably when Miriam fell into alcoholism, and Bob tried to mould his younger daughter in her sister's image.
I disagree. In Helga’s preschool flashback, we see the perfectionism Bob and Miriam instilled in Olga and the neglect they put on Helga. These are signs Miriam and the family as a whole were struggling before Olga moved out.
Helga and Pheobe's relationship should've been covered in this video. If Helga and Pheobe's relationship were on this list it would've probably been in the grey area. Which makes sense considering how Helga treats Pheobe in the show and how Pheobe lets Helga boss her around mainly because she's passive and rarely stands ups for herself. Despite this they do care about each other
Miriam seems apathetic to everything because she was basically an alcoholic. That was how she coped with dealing with Bob, it was to get sauced all the time. You see the week where Bob is out of work from an injury, Miriam is sober and fully functional. She's even a better salesman than Bob ever was.
There was hints at the ‘Pataki show’ that Miriam was gonna work at some TV studio, I think, and became successful. If Bob would’ve let her handle the failing business, she might be able to bring it back.
Another relationship that should be in here is Helga and Olga. I did notice that you didn't have sibling, parent/child, family, or friendships. There many of those. If you did have them, Helga and Olga would be in the lower end of toxic, just out of the Grey area. While Olga really does seem to love her baby sister and attempts to shower her with affection, Olga can barely cease to brag about herself and her many accomplishments for long, making her appear selfish and egotistical to Helga. Helga in return doesn't see Olga's attempts at affection as genuine, rarely. Even if Olga dose this in front of her parents to please them, she still rarely drops the act when her and Helga are alone. Plus, when she's home, Olga doesn't seem to understand personal space towards Helga. Helga in return makes little to no effort to be nice towards her sister; always being hostile and extremely open about her hatred and resentment towards Olga. Although considering Helga's age and the fact that she can't yet be held too responsible on her side of the relationship (same with her parents), I cut her some slack. They do have a couple of sweet sister moments, but overall this is a toxic relationship.
It's more there parents fault they barely praise Helga or treat her like how they treat her story. The main reason she is in love with Arnold was bc he showed kindness and compassion to her
They were clearly only talking about the romantic relationships. If it was any relationship, we would see Arnold and Gerald's relationship, Helga and Phoebe's relationship, Harold, Stinky, and Sid's, etc.
Helga and Olga relationship suffered because look who their parents are.. OLGA did have a ego.. but I don’t think it was intentional..Bob and Miriam just really put Olga on pedestal.. where she had to be perfect.. and I’m glad in that one episode where Helga changed her grade.. Olga acknowledge rift between them and understand Why her and Helga can’t get their ish together.. Helga, well we know her story and makes us cry every time.. Bob and Miriam worst parents ever.
My headcanon for Arnold & Helga's relationship is that it wouldn't become healthy until after the events of "The Patakis" (& would be an on & off relationship). Arnold & his parents would move away, probably to San Lorenzo, & Helga would continue to see Dr. Bliss. Arnold would send her letters during "The Patakis", & Helga would write letters but not send them. When Arnold would return to Hillwood (around junior or senior year of high school, in my opinion), he'd confront Helga about why she never answered his letters. Helga would explain why, Arnold would ultimately understand, & they'd get back together. That time apart would be a huge blessing in disguise for their relationship. Since they would've had the opportunity to grow & experience life without each other, their relationship would be infinitely healthier.
The creator did say they broke up but I understand why because they rushed into a relationship at such a young age to fill a void left in their lives. They have a lot of time to mature and change, I don't know why people think 9 yr olds with trauma will have a long perfect relationship.
@@Claudia_Crimson_585where’s the proof of the creator saying this? Craig Bartlett has said before that Arnold and Helga would have a healthy relationship in the future.
@@Claudia_Crimson_585 No. They don't Break Up. The Draft says "Helga and Arnold maintain a Long Distance Relationship via email and IM as Arnold has moved away with his Parents Miles and Stella. Each Episode of the Patakis will mention Arnold in passing and will have voice overs from Phillip Van Dyke. Arnold basically will be heard, but won't be seen".
@@theunknown1395 Correct. In The Patakis Draft, Helga and Arnold have a Long Distance Relationship. And seeing that it was written in the Early 2000s, "They keep in touch via email and Instant Messaging". Bartlett has stated in no uncertain terms that "Arnold and Helga are SOULMATES".
I mean to be fair, Pookie and Phil started as gray since she bullied him as well. But I agree now that they are in the Healthy! And I have no doubt Arnold and Helga would have become a Healthy relationship.
I always loved Arnold's grandparents. You could tell that, while their relationship started off with schoolyard teasing, they obviously grew out of it to genuinely care for each other. We see that in Gertie's determination to save The Circle Theater, since it was where she and Phil had their first date. We see it in Phil constantly just rolling with whatever persona Gertie decides to take on that day. Phil and Gertie clearly love each other and it's adorable.
With Helga's home life it's no wonder she has trouble expressing her feelings normally. Anger is all she's been taught to express, and while she is a good person and feels love in her heart she can't express it as easily as others because of her parents. Hey Arnold! was teaching you real issues when all the other kid shows weren't.
This was a great video. Though, I agree with a lot of the placements of the relationships, there were some more prominent and additional ones to consider and just some funny and interesting ones too: Arnold & Gerald Helga & Phoebe Rhonda & Nadine Arnold & Eugene Grandpa & Mitzi Helga & Olga Helga & Miriam Helga & Big Bob Gerald & Jamie O Gerald & Chloe Arnold & Summer Grandpa & Jimmy Kafka Arnold & Arnie Arnold & Lulu (Lila's counterpart) Arnie & Lila Rhonda & Patty Helga & Patty Harold, Sid & Stinky Arnold & Iggy Harold & Helga
For a moment I was under the impression that the bottom 2 choices should've been switched, and after hearing your reasoning you convinced me otherwise. Well Done!
I forgot the episode but the one where Helga dreamt she wasn't born or around and her parents were happy I think it's quite possible they were in love and happy when it was just Olga then they had Helga and their lives when downhill. I'm not saying it's Helga's fault but you can tell by the obvious affection they have towards Olga. I know the Thanksgiving episode may say otherwise but that was one moment
Yeah I even say that Dr. Carver is one of few legitimately evil villains in the show (others being Sista Spice, that ghost from the Halloween episode, and Al Roker). Others like The Gross Sisters and Wizard Kelly aren't evil just giant jerks
phil and gerties relationship shouldve been number one arnold's parents are barely shown at all. same for the relationship with phoebe and gerald. as for helga and arnold as they age they'll be fine remember they're still young and helga is doing amazing considering her toxic, verbally and emotionally abusive home
What about Rhonda and Harold? They fitted better than in the episodes both were together than with Curly and with Patty, having in mind that one relationship was because of blackmailed and the other just for self compassion.
Nice video! I made a TOP 10 Toxic Hey Arnold Relationships video earlier this year. I see your point about Bob and Miriam not showing affection so that makes them more toxic than Susie and Oskar. Though for me, Susie and Oskar's relationship will always be the absolute worst, lol.
The it would be nice to have a hey arnold spinoff were they are teenagers and Noone knows about helga and Arnold's relationship. And how they cope with their lives and I know this sounds dumb but I would like to see arnold express more emotion. Since he's so nice and never really expresses his feeling I would like to see him act more expressive as a teenager.
Well Helga probably feels that she has to be strong because she would be picked on more plus she had a lot of bad examples from her parents. If she had good parents who cared about her like arnold did she might have been a different person. Maybe if she and her sister saw a mental health doctor they might grow as people and the first step is ditching their parents.
For Arnold and Helga relationship I blame Helga’s parents because they didn’t rise her well, they completely ignore her leaving her to adopt her tuff girl personality to not show any weakness 🤔🤔🤔
You completely overlook that Helga is literally obsessed with him. Stalking him, breaking into his house, stealing his stuff, making shrines of and to him, forming what's basically a religion, literally trying to harm other girls around him, and she even comments in one episode that she makes animal sacrifices to him. It's full on obsession, like Fatal Attraction style, and it is NOT healthy.
Yea, having shrines of someone is creepy but I think it's a sort of a good outlet for her to let out all of these intense emotions she keeps bottoming up for half of her life. Yea, animal sacrifices is extreme but Helga is an extreme character.

Why did you overlook the psychological basis for Helga’s behaviour? She comes from an incredibly problematic household where opening her heart often leads to hurt.
I wish that hey Arnold got a new life in this day age with them a little older and how technically where we are nowadays would make so much more episode's. I mean I grew up in the early 90s.
From what I can glean from Miriam and Big Bob, they had a whirlwind romance like Olga and Doug, but they actually got married, and now Miriam looks back on her choice in regret because she never got to do all the things she was aspiring to do. Bob has a bad temper and to me isn’t as accomplished as his wife, so he lives vicariously through Olga and occasionally Helga since Olga’s not around to be the seasoned first pick. Actually, the only episode where they seemed happy was in the Summer love episode and the one where Miriam went to work as bob’s job. Which to me says Bob needs a long vacation and Miriam needs a hobby or an actual job to lift her mood and feel useful.
What makes Suzie & Oskar's relationship even worse is the fact that she committed domestic violence. a relationship between Arnold and Helga would be completely toxic. Helga likewise seems to see Arnold more as her property rather than a real human being; weight was lent to this notion in the episodes Helga and the Nanny and Substitute Teacher in which Helga got her housekeeper and Olga fired from their jobs just because Arnold complimented them. Looking back at the episode Married, Arnold's dream seemed a bit closer to what might happen if Helga actually married him(Bossing him around, making him do all of the household chores and ignoring their kids) which is all the more reason why they are not a good match.
They will be a good match when they are grown mature adults and being possessive of your crush is quite normal especially if you're a 9 yr old neglected girl. The creator confirmed that they do get married in the end.

What about the relationship between Helga and Olga?
@@cedricjones7560 Helga and Olga’s relationship has some positive traits, but it is not without its toxic issues.
On the Positive Side:
Unlike her parents, Olga has consistently made efforts to bond with Helga in every episode she and Helga interact together.
On the Negative Side:
Olga and Helga have very poor communication skills and do not keep healthy relationship boundaries.
I’ve been yelling GET A DIVORCE!!!!!!!! When watching Susie and Oscar and Bob and Mariam.
It’s hinted at that Susie divorced Oscar in the jungle movie
@@Back_in_town_tonight what part?
Yeah I looked everywhere and I can’t find Susie so she must’ve left him. But the question is: how is Oscar still in the boarding house with Susie?
I can't stand Lila. I respect Arnold for telling Gerald's sister the truth and you can see he felt really bad about what he did and here comes Lila saying she was impressed and she also blamed him completely.
Lila was a goody goody so most times it’s actually bad
@@oooh19 Yes. She was ever so annoying
Lila is basically just a DeviantArt oc
Helga did have romantic feelings for Arnold? Lol
@@reneedubuc3712 Maybe, Bob more so than Miriam. I think the drinking probably started after Olga left home, even so.
I have a great respect for Brainy I hope He finds someone special
Helga and Pheobe's relationship should've been covered in this video. If Helga and Pheobe's relationship were on this list it would've probably been in the grey area. Which makes sense considering how Helga treats Pheobe in the show and how Pheobe lets Helga boss her around mainly because she's passive and rarely stands ups for herself. Despite this they do care about each other
That is a great idea
The main reason she is in love with Arnold was bc he showed kindness and compassion to her
@@blackrecruitFlt I know.
If I recall, Phil abs his wife had a similar “didn’t get along as kids but fell for each other as they got older” dynamic

Though, I agree with a lot of the placements of the relationships, there were some more prominent and additional ones to consider and just some funny and interesting ones too:
Arnold & Gerald
Helga & Phoebe
Rhonda & Nadine
Arnold & Eugene
Grandpa & Mitzi
Helga & Olga
Helga & Miriam
Helga & Big Bob
Gerald & Jamie O
Gerald & Chloe
Arnold & Summer
Grandpa & Jimmy Kafka
Arnold & Arnie
Arnold & Lulu (Lila's counterpart)
Arnie & Lila
Rhonda & Patty
Helga & Patty
Harold, Sid & Stinky
Arnold & Iggy
Harold & Helga
For a moment I was under the impression that the bottom 2 choices should've been switched, and after hearing your reasoning you convinced me otherwise. Well Done!
Hey Arnold is one of those shows that are just... so well made and so well put together for a slice of life, episodic show.
It's magic show, from the first season
So it’s helgas fault for simply being born?!
@@oooh19 that's what the episode was implying. Her parents suck basically
Miriam is a lush becuase Bob enables it and treats her like garbage. We saw when she went back to work how much happier and more fulfilled she is.
Really wish Nick gave Hey Arnold a reboot so that we can see some of these relationships evolve.

^^^^
Obviously lol but she does care about Arnold and she didn't do it just for the heck of it. The reason why was to keep her secret from getting out...
Yea, having shrines of someone is creepy but I think it's a sort of a good outlet for her to let out all of these intense emotions she keeps bottoming up for half of her life. Yea, animal sacrifices is extreme but Helga is an extreme character.

I don't think that Big Bob and Miriam should have gotten married in the first place.
