It is so frustrating to see families in domestic relationships and you give them constant help and advice on how to be safe and have a better life and then days, weeks, months later, it's repeated again. As if they haven't learnt anything. And it must be so frustrating for you, seeing the same thing constantly and can't do much about it because of their 'wise choices' they make.
Maybe they should take a leaf out of your book, to see reality from their fantasy.

You will never understand what it’s like to be in their shoes. Sometimes they’re scared for their life, their kids lives - sometimes they feel like they don’t have the means or resources to leave. It’s not that simple. Have a bit of empathy.

Constable Hurn! long time fan, first time caller! As someone who's considering joining the police I'm a big fan of your work. I was wondering if it was possible for you to speak on your long-term career ambitions within the police (if you'd like) and to shed some light on whats involved in the other jobs one can progress to (and the pathways towards them) once you're a FTO e.g. Organised Crime & Drugs unit, negotiation teams, AOS, Special Tactic Group etc. In depth detail about these job is hard to come by on the New Cops site.
So you spend your first two years as a Probationary Constable. After you finish your workplace assessments you are a fully fledged Constable. It's around this time people start looking at other roles of which there are many.
During your performance reviews and in both formal and informal conversations with your supervisors you talk about what you want to do and where you'd like to be.
Then it's up to you to apply or express interest more formally - a process you learn about on the job. Each role has different requirements, they might have competitive selections, extra tests or courses or may just be something you can slot directly into.
There are so many it's impossible for me to talk through it here and you'll often find what people say they are interested in at the start changes as they progress.
For me, I love the front line and I really enjoy developing new staff. After my two years I decided to apply to be a Field Training Officer (or FTO) because I really enjoy leading people into and through their early days with the Police. It involved an application, basically a long report about why I wanted to do it and why I'd be good at it. This was followed by some extra training once I was selected and then I got the role. Must be depressing at times having to deal with these kinds of family violence incidents. It seems like alcohol and drug abuse are factors in many of the incidents.
Bang on, although not exclusively. Alcohol and Drug problems certainly fuel a level of behavior that is more obviously a concern but family violence can be insidious with a private malevolence that can go unnoticed if you're not looking closely at each situation regardless of the more obvious signs. - Constable Hurn.
juandenz2008 You have no idea how accurate your comment is! I spent 10 years in Australia as a frontline police officer and the last 21 as a paramedic. I've spent shifts where it seems like police and ambulance crews just follow each other going from one DV job to the next.
I get asked "what's the worst thing you've ever seen?". I would say without a doubt it's the way some children are exposed in their homes. Parents taking drugs, the domestic violence and family assaults and the neglect they receive. Babies with severe nappy rash, filthy nappies and covered in old faeces, skin disorders and health issues because those expected to care for them are often too drug or alcohol affected to provide a duty of care. Then there's the partners who spend their lives just going through what's known as a DV cycle.
Traumatic injuries and medical emergencies are events you're well trained in. Family violence and instances of child neglect can be the most challenging jobs that really test you.
If a car hits your parked car and doesn't leave their details but a witness is able to obtain their number plate. Is it something to report to the police or just the insurance company?
It would be awesome if you could put go pro footage responding a lot more, and it would be ideal to equip a go pro on the police car. Anyway nice vlog and congratulations finishing up on your training always enjoy watching you videos as I'm trying to promote footage over here in Australia Queensland for the police as I have have family in the force.

A nice snap shot of front line Policing, thank you all for making our communities safer. So if you produced a Vlog of say a dash cam scene while your 10 2, would that still have privacy implications on showing enroute to a job? Of course there would have to be some editing, but just a bit of insight in some of the challenges officers must face in just getting to a job would be really good.
Yeah I've done it before but I've only got my one Go Pro so it's hard to swap it around for different views, It's definitely something I'd like to show you though and will hopefully work on. - Constable Hurn.
@@newzealandpolice I hear you on that one. I guess it would mean having 2 go pro cameras, one fix mounted in the patrol unit for that day and one on you. Don't get me wrong, I love watching the VLOGS, I have sat there watching a video while attending under lights and siren and wanting to see the challenges faced at peak traffic flow times. I'm coming up 33yrs old and looking to apply to the police I'm currently joining a gym and getting fit ,to me it seems like such an impossible process with all the tests etc it's very daunting but it will be well worth it if I make it .
Hey Josh, if joining the Police is something you want to achieve, stick with it. I've seen a lot of people get knocked back on their first or second try. If that happens, try and get feedback as to why you didn't make it. Persistence does pay off. If you get to the interview stage, that means you jumped all the other hoops and are on the final leg. It's a career definitely worthy of pursuing.

Any tips for joining the police force with a chronic illness? I’m from Aus so it might be a little different but I’ve always dreamt of becoming a detective. I’m just worried my illness won’t let me enter the police force!
It really depends what it is, best thing to do would be to have a chat with recruitment staff in your area about the specifics of the illness, it's symptoms and management. If it doesn't pan out you could always look at the intelligence field, here that is mostly done by non-sworn staff members (which means no medical clearance needed) and they do a whole lot to support big investigations. alp 111 I'd recommend you chat with your GP whether your chronic illness will hinder your ability to successfully complete the fitness test and police work in general. Applicants actually have to supply a medical certificate stating they're fit and healthy enough to do the fitness tests.
I'm not going to ask what your chronic illness is, because that's not my business but I can tell you that a lot of people with challenges make it through. I spent 10 years policing in Australia and watched a few of the selection processes.
Can you study for a Bachelor of Policing (or similar) while serving in the NZ police force?
All the study you need to do to be a Police officer you do on the Job, either at Police College or through work place assessments.
Some people do other study while they are working too but this will depend on your role and how you can balance the time required. - Constable Hurn.

drifting&hackingyourphone, Police Officers are trained to drive in tiptronic at Police college, as you have more control of the vehicle and a lesser chance of losing control when accelerating through intersections etc
Yeah I do, much like a motorbike driving is all about being smooth so managing the gears yourself lets you keep the RPM exactly where you want it. Sometimes, especially when it's a tight road or there is lots of traffic it is easier to leave it in Sports though, the computer is fairly good at it's job. - Constable Hurn.

When you were going to that property and they had 2 dangerous pit bull dogs, I just want to know if you personally think that breed is dangerous ( since you have properly had your fair share of bad times with that breed) or do you just think it’s how the owners train and look after their dog. , curious as I know they have a bad rep and I personally know my little pit bull dog is an angel. :)
It's a tough call, the old nature v nurture debate.
I mean Pitbulls and Rottweilers are responsible for nearly 80% of all fatalities from dog attacks despite only representing a small number of total dogs. These are america statistics but definitely representative here too.
You've got to remember these dogs were selectively bred for generations to be fighting and guard dogs. They can be great pets but need really good owners to manage them.
Unfortunately when stressed, when poorly trained or when encouraged by bad owners these dogs can lash out. They obviously aren't the only dangerous dogs, they just have a physiological capacity for inflicting injury many other dogs don't have and are thus more dangerous.

Have you guys considered swapping a part of the fleet with some Model S P100D? That car has more than enough range (450+ km), has around 700HP, can do 0-100 in about 3.5 seconds, and the maintenance costs are significantly lower, not to mention the fuel costs. It's 2019 so it's time to start moving away from fossil fuels. Your colleagues in Luxembourg, Basel, and a few cities in California already have a few Teslas in their fleets. Otherwise, keep up the good work - both in terms of policing and vlogging 😀.
No argument from me that it would be a great patrol car, unfortunately there are some practicalities and some numbers between the Tesla and our standard patrol car. Long term reliability, availability of parts out here in NZ, factory support when they do need repair (remembering we have like 3000+ vehicles), resale, there are many concerns beyond just performance and efficiency.
Additionally we're a national service with a nation wide procurement process - when you're buying hundreds of cars a year things aren't as simple as just adding a few Tesla's here and there.
That said, I definitely see a future where we drive electric vehicles, especially as more models are released and prices come down, hopefully one day soon I can do a tour through one! - Constable Hurn.

You don’t need any particular qualifications to join the Police. If you’re still at school, aim to get the best grades you can. Being proficient in maths and English is essential.
By the way, when you go to the Royal New Zealand Police College, you’ll be put through some pretty intense training, so be prepared to be challenged.
We encourage people to:
• Get your full NZ Driver Licence
• Volunteer/get involved in a community group / coach a sport
• Keep out of trouble
• Stay fit and active

I just moved to Auckland from the south island. Every time I see a cop I check to see if it's you!! Haven't spotted you yet but hopefully soon and I will say hi if possible :D ( Is it bad to hope to see the police? Hmm I hope not! )
I'd like to ask - if we as civilians are first car in a line of traffic at a red light and you are behind us trying to get through, " is it ok for us to drive through the red light with you" ????
I have no doubt found this to be a stressful decision, while trying to allow you to do your job and not break the law....
It's extremely situational, If you're able to tuck off to the side that is certainly preferable, like turning left rather than going straight. Sometimes that might put you over the lines a bit especially on particularly narrow streets. Often at stop signs people have to dribble through to let us past too. The important thing is that the cross traffic has seen you and seen us. Try your best to get out of the way but don't put yourself at risk. You won't get a ticket from us if you're trying to be helpful. A good thing to remember is leaving space between you and the vehicle in front, if everyone leaves a little bubble then people have room to part in the center for us to get through. - Constable Hurn.
Hi Jake, I'm a paramedic in Queensland, Australia and often see drivers trying to do the right thing in allowing an emergency vehicle to pass.
Luckily Australian and NZ intersections are designed to be fairly wide. If you see an emergency vehicle coming through, the first step I'd recommend is to have a look to your left. Try to pull over as far left as possible without actually entering the intersection. That might mean you have to drive onto the pedestrian crossing part. Be mindful though of pedestrians, especially those with earphones who might be oblivious even to a loud siren. Don't get stressed or panic. It's not your emergency, it's not even the attending crews emergency, it's somebody else's. What is scary is seeing cars dart across the intersection and put themselves and others in danger. You will get a traffic infringement notice if you run a red light irrespective. It's dangerous enough driving through a red light with all the lights and sirens.
Make sure that whatever manoeuvre you do is safe to yourself, other road users and pedestrians. Drivers of emergency vehicles are trained to navigate around such traffic.

As I explained in the video, the offender was fleeing the property as we pulled up. It was operationally necessary for me to remove it early and falls withing the exemption to those rules that we have for the purpose of executing out duties.
