    Volvo 480
The 480 is an interesting car, for if nothing else, completely goes against the safe and vanilla image many non car people have of Volvo as a manufacturer.
It’s not only an interesting car to look at, especially for the time, but is Volvo’s first FWD car in an era where they were still extolling the virtues of RWD motoring to the American audience.
The car took six years to come to fruition and although it was launched to press in 1985, it took nearly nine months to then become available to the buying public
We’ve mentioned the FWD being the first for Volvo, but Volvo also boasted it was the first car, or certainly one of the first, to be sold in Europe with bumpers which met American safety requirements. Sadly due to exchange rates in the late 80s, the car never got to be the success it should’ve been in the American market.
It was also Volvo’s only car ever made with pop up headlights and really, was worlds away from the usual Volvo the buyer would expect with it’s sporty styling and sleek hatch body.
Although it’s a lesser spotted car in the UK, of all the 480s sold, 30% which accounted for 22,000 cars, sold in the UK. The car was sold from 1986 until 1995 and was offered either a 5 speed manual box from Renault or a 4 speed auto. The car we’re testing today has the auto.
At the start the 480s were all fitted with the 1.7 litre Renault engine which gave a fair output of 109 horse power and a top speed of 118 miles per hour; although wasn’t the quickest to get to that top number.
The car we’re testing, as we’ll discuss, has the turbocharger which was an option from 1988 which increased the output to 120 horse power.
Then in 1993, Volvo introduced the 2 litre engine, but this never got the turbocharger which was afforded to the 1.7 Renault engine.
Although the engines were tweaked, the body style was not, and the car you see before us today as the three door hatchback style; but with an underrated amount of legroom for both people in the front of the car and in the back.
It wasn’t just the engine which wasn’t a Volvo creation on these 480s and the suspension was input from Lotus which gave this interesting little car rave reviews on the handling and ride quality - something that even decades later I pick up on during the drive as a big plus point.
The unusual little Volvo with its cutting edge tech and daring for Volvo styling came to a close on the production line in 1995. It’s still massively loved by fans, has one of the most active owners groups I’ve ever seen and is still affordable for classic buyers - but is it worth it?

😍😍😍 hope you’re well, lovely. This beautiful little boy now lives with an 81 year old gentleman in Wales. I drove it over a couple of weeks ago. I’ve sold the C30 too and opted to have a diesel Xantia as the one and only car now. Best of both worlds; a daily wedge. ☺️

I loved the 480 when I was a child, purely because it was a sporty car from possibly the LEAST sporty of manufacturers, or so my 10 year old mind thought anyway. So glad you got this one on the channel. Incidentally the info centre was carried over and I have a later version on my '02 V40 SE, although you only get the digital readout and not the dedicated "gauge" 😔

I own one of these and I can't get over how great the forum support is. It's knowledge and support like this that helps these cars stay on the road and remain interesting. When all my friends has posters if Ferrari's and Lamborghini's I had press cuttings and pictures of the 480 on my wall. Sad? That's up to you to decide 😂😂 But it's like a way of life and that's how classic car ownership should be 👍🏻
Great video, keep up the awesome work!

I love my volvo480. Mine is the 2.0litre 1994 with airbag, catalytic converter, electric windows, mirrors, sunroof. So much!
Mine was a true barnfind for a few hundred quid. I'm working on getting it back on the road, hopefully next year, as it's welding and bodywork letting it down. Engine and running gear ran and is great from the moment it was hauled out of the barn!

Great choice Steph to me one of the most interesting and unique Volvos I like the homage to the P1800 ES on the rear hatch. Apparently when initial designs where presented to head designers in Göthenberg they where offended the Volvo grill was set so low. Been a while nice to see you post again

The 480 was engineered with USA sales in mind, but was never sold here. The currency exchange rate was the primary issue. Some are finding their way here due to the 25 year and older import exemption.

You are the first person who gave me a deep Insight. Tech knowledge, focussed on very interesting Details I've never heard of. Plus your describtion of how to drive. Full of knowledge and passion.
It's undoutable for me: This was the ever best 480 review for me.
Best and warmest regards from Cologne, Germany.

I drove and worked on these cars when they were current and remember how un-Volvo like they were! I have to say I don't remember too many problems back then, perhaps time is not too kind on the electrics! Great video as always, Steph!

Great review Steph. Netherland built Volvo's are so underrated! 300, 400 and '40 series they aren't that bad and when you get a good one they are really great. My '03 S40 has been impeccable! Although it does have only 62.000 miles on the clock.
I remember when these where launched and thinking wow! Love the sound of the 1.7 turbo's the remind me of the Chrysler/Dodge turbo's of the same era.
Also the 480 shares a similar lower grille design with the Citroen BX a nod to the Tundra prototype.

I'm so pleased so many have survived. In the 90s they had a terrible reputation for unreliability issues and poor electrics. Many were scrapped as even some Volvo agents couldn't sort out some of the rough running and idle issues. Great that there are now mechanics specialising in these wonderful little cars.

Not only was the 480 not a success in the American market, it wasn’t even sold in the American market! But, you can see it was Volvo’s goal by two distinctive things: the big bumpers, and the fact they stamped a hole in the rear side panel for a side-marker light. That tear light/reflector combination would have been colored red for the American market (so the amber front and red rear ends of the car are distinguishable when viewed from the side at night) but apparently EU requirements means it has to be amber there.

I lusted after these when they were new, and bought one some 20 years ago. Unfortunately my experience involved a fishpond in the boot, flaky electrics, and a knackered gearbox. I was then rear-ended by a lady in a 940 estate of all cars, two weeks after shelling out for a replacement gearbox. Funnily enough, I dug some photos of mine out of the loft last weekend and was reminiscing yesterday. I'd love another one. Great video & a stunning 480 too👍

Family friends were in the market for something interesting. Long story short they asked me to test drive a new 480ES in return for a written review. I loved the car.
Watching the video an everlasting memory of that info display came back. I remember writing "it's so easy to use that you may actually use it"
I found the non Turbo engine of the ES slightly lacking however the handling and ride made up for it. I also was not a fan of the slightly rourty exhaust.
Yed they brought a new one and kept it for 10 years. They did have a few electrical problems that the dealership could not fix however a backyard car electronics expert had no problem resolving the few issues they had.

I've tried to post a link to the 480 Club Europe forum here (which is for 90% a UK forum really, though there are members as far away as Siberia!), but apparently RUclips flags that as spam and deleted my comment, so anyone interested should Google on that and go to the forum. Anyway, MASSIVE thanks for following up my suggestion to do a video on the 480 Steph and mentioning the support, which is as Practical Classics described it in the October issue "verging on fanatical" 😂
Bear in mind for those looking for a 480, rust (especially around the wheel arches) and unobtainium parts like rear light clusters are the main enemy of the car. Most stuff can be fixed or is being re-made, but you must be willing to pay a price for that.
(the sad part, I know you've shot the video some time ago, regrettably Edie had to sell her car, it's found a good home and is on a different plate now: VOL 480T)

I had one of these. Always wanted one since I first saw them at the launch. Loved the styling and everything about them.
Sadly mine was a bit older when I got it. It was a 1988 model in black. Looked fantastic.
But unfortunately it was the most unreliable car I have ever owned. It developed electrical gremlins, as mentioned in this video, which never did get sorted, despite spending much money on garage bills to get it fixed.
Also, the pop-up lights used to stick down. Turn the lights on and only one would pop up, looked odd with only one eye!
Simple fix was to open and drop the bonnet very hard and then the other light would pop up as well!

Reminded me back when I was a apprentice at Volvo when these cars were out, I loved the looks, but my god the build issues, electric's as you mentioned but also the back end was like a sieve! much like the Aygo/107/C2 are today but, the turbo is fun but the manual version has horrendous torque steer! What an excellent review, Steph. I briefly had one of these, and totally loved the design - especially the inside. It drove really nicely and was comfortable and reasonably practical. But - right from the start, the electrical gremlins, paintwork that chipped all too easily, and a clutch failure at 9000 miles made me swap to Japanese reliability. Toyotas and Suzukis since with never a single issue, despite high mileages. Nonetheless, still a pang of regret this wasn't the car it could have been.

I had a lot of affection for my 480ES. Second car I owned, the styling was probably the best I could afford at the time (in the late 90's; other viable options was 3rd and 4th gen Prelude). It wasn't super reliable - new clutch was required, and the pop ups (which are SUPER cool) kept failing. But it had so much character. And looked amazing (mine was grey with the unpainted bumpers - did pine for the red metallic one though). It's a gorgeous motor and sorely missed on todays roads. Eventually replaced it with a Saab 900 Talladega. Definite step up in quality, and yeah, still had charm. But always slightly missed the original Volvo. Twenty years later back in the Volvo fold with a Polestar, which personally is spiritually a good cross between both the 480 and 900. Like the idea of finding a 480 to cherish as a weekender though.

Speedo packed up on the way for an MOT but not a failure point and it just as mysteriously started working again days later. Loved the feel of the interior/rear seats. Good solid practical stylish car if a bit rattly. Never understood why the later C30 was influenced by the 480 but had such a stupidly narrow tailgate.

There was a prototype 2.0 turbo but they ran into cooling problems. The 1.7 turbo can be remapped to 170 bhp which is more than the Renault 9 chassis can cope with and improper remaps will lunch its Renault JB3 gearbox (if you have a manual). Turbo auto boxes are extremely rare, only made in 1991 and 1992 model years on special order. Edie's car is one of the best examples in the known universe, the only options missing are air conditioning and cruise control.

The electrics wouldn't bother me as that is something I am very happy to deal with, l like a challenge but I can understand that it might be daunting for some. It is funny that it still sounds like a Volvo even though its a Renault engine! Great review Steph and nice to see you back. Another awesome video, Steph! It's funny that the car was designed for the US (Federal bumpers and a catalytic converter) but never sold here. In the '80s, most Americans thought of Volvo as either hippy-dippy granola cars for people who saw cars as a necessary evil (the 240 bricks), or Swedish Modern yuppie transport pods (the 700 series).
Probably for the best, though. This would have been too fancy for the 200 series customers and too small for the 700 series prospects. It looks like a fun ride notwithstanding the struggles they'd have had selling it in the US.

Sorry to disappoint, but 240 owners, at least the ones I have met over the years, LOVE their cars for the enjoyment of driving them. There is little so satisfying as taking a 240 wagon and hurling it around the bends on a twisty road. The engineering that went into them in the 1960s was quite advanced and the 240 still more than holds is own. May be a live axle, but upper and lower trailing arms, a Panhard rod, and a hefty antisway bar located it perfectly. Add properly calibrated springs and dampers, and the 240 is great fun. I should know, as mine has about 380,000 miles on the clock.

Steph, someone may have commented already, but actually this never made it Stateside when new, although now they can be brought in under the "25 year rule" allowing vehicles made 25 years ago and older into the country. The 480 was designed with the US market in mind, but the US dollar-Dutch guilder exchange rate raised the price where it would not be competitive in the USA. But I did not know it was designed with the US / Canadian market in mind! But of course if it has the "5-mph"-bumpers designed to meet the US crash regulations of the period, we must have been considered! I remember it from the Matchbox version I had as a young teenager. Looking at it now, I see the fourth generation Honda Civic there in the rear! Hmm, now I see who "inspired" Honda! The front end always looked rather Japanese-style, and to me, somewhat generic 1980s. I think Mitusbishi Starion (aka "Dodge Conquest" twin through Chrysler dealers here), or the Australian made 1989-1994 Ford / Mercury Capri convertible.

I really like these, and looked for one to buy when I needed a reasonably cheap runabout. Couldn’t find one, so I bought a 2.0litre Volvo 440 instead - a really nice, and fairly reliable car (mine was on 130k miles, and had an oil leak!). Drove it around as a work motor for about a year, but sadly couldn’t sell it on, so unfortunately it ended up getting scrapped.

Another soon to be future classic Volvo will be the Volvo C30 hatchback which arrived in 2005 and pretty much took inspiration from the 480. The C30 was also based on the Ford Focus MK2 platform and they even had one running the 5 cylinder engine with sporty suspension from the Focus ST.

A friend had one in the Mid 90s , dark red , it had a switch that would lock doors from inside , anti carjack device that originated from South Africa , I think it was a pre curser to central locking being standard on most cars.

I remember seeing a few of these in Italy when on vacation with my family in the late 90s early 2,000s. Thanks for giving me a better look at one. Kinda reminds me of a 90s civic hatch. Also any chance of getting a review of a Rover 200 series. A coupe, convertible? I love these cars because they are Honda based and the coupe is a Integra I believe.

Had one of these in white too, was a later model with the bigger and more rounded 15 inch wheels, also had leather, AC and most importantly a manual box. Uping the boost to 13psi which it easily handles made it pretty rapid for the time and a set of Eilbach springs gave it a nicer ride with better handling. Wondering if my old car L184DPK still exists.

Very interesting video, Stef. The 480 was not offered here in Canada, and I do not think it was on the US, either. The warning about the electrical system actually applies to many European Cars of the era, as Volvo, Saab, Volkswagen, BMW, Mercedes, and others all used Bosch electrics. I have been known to observe that while Lucas Electrics may have invented darkness, Robert Bosch refined darkness and took it to a whole new level. Fortunately parts to keep the electrical system are easy to come by, and many of the aftermarket parts improve on the original design.
I was really interested in watching this video because I am a Volvo driver and enthusiast. My daily, and only, driver is the 1990 240DL Estate my mother bought new for her 60th birthday. She had to quit driving 6 years ago which is when I started driving Old Arthur daily. Being a Canadian market car, he has the 2.3 litre Red Block with fuel injection and is backed up by the AW-70 automatic with overdrive gearbox. Once you are used to the way Volvo calibrated everything, optimized for severe winter weather, you come to realize just how much fun is built into them and how carefully they were engineered. Looks like the 480 follows that same formula. Some day I would love to drive one, mainly to see how it compares with Arthur. The funny thing is that the horsepower is almost the same. 115 on the 240 and 120 on the 480.

    These are really classy.
That 1721cc Renault engine (and I believe the 1390cc Renault engine) went into a fair few Volvo and Renault models. The 1721cc produced around 90hp in the 5 GTX and Monaco and of course the Turbo version of the Renault 21 has become something of an iconic car in some circles.
I love when sensible manufacturers like Volvo do something a little bit different. The 480 has stood the test of time initially due to its unique styling and today as a truly retro design.

Another great video Steph and another cracking car. Love the 480. Have to say those stereo units get about. Pretty sure they were Phillips units and were widely used in the Rover R8. I think Renault used them too.

    • @michaeltutty1540
      @michaeltutty1540 2 года назад

Volvo was using Clarion stereos back then. No idea who they are using now. The factory stereos are great noise generators, but useless at much else. There is a damned good reason people swap them out. They want to be able to listen to traffic and weather reports. The factory head units make that a hit and miss proposition.

    • @volvo480
      @volvo480 2 года назад

@@michaeltutty1540 Original Volvo radios in 1980s/1990s were mostly made by Alpine and Mitsubishi. The stereo in the UK 480's was a Philips unit branded as Volvo, same as in Rover.

I worked as a sales exec at a calico dealer in swansea in in early 90s…loved the style of these but the service dept called them goldfish bowls i asked why they said you’ll find out when you sell one !…
Sure enough I sold one on a G plate in black and looked great but came back soon after sold it as was full of water in boot -and footwells hence name goldfish bowl ( it rained heavily and often in Swansea ) this was due to I’ll fitting tailgates and rear lamp clusters
The one in your video looks great in white and am sure the issues I mentioned have long since been cured if they did exist on that example

That Volvo cassette deck looks almost identical to the one in later Rover R8's. That's no real surprise though as companies like Philips made head units for a lot of manufacturers and branded them accordingly.

Fabulous design and still a few around. I had a 1995 440 (my first new car) and it was a comfortable, dependable and well-sorted family car. Put the supposedly high quality and reliable Golf to shame. Interest in the 400 series is now on the rise as it dawns that Clarkson et al. did not know what they were talking about. All the small Volvos from the 300 right through to the V40 are darn good cars for not a lot of money.

Oh, one more thing, the clock which you mention at 11:08 in the video was also available as a fully digital clock in the first model years and can be swapped out within seconds. But the design of the clock matches the speedometer and rev counter which are analogue as well and the clock is fully electronic, you need to set them with up and down buttons. I like the analogue design more than the digital which was a simple green 7-segment LED clock, making it look more like a Japanese car.
