Pete needs to take charge of this situation and tell Boras to make a deal. Otherwise he's going to wind up like Freddie Freeman, who ended up not re-signing with the Braves. I remember Freddie in tears during his first press conference back in Atlanta.
3yr-$93million? Every player knows the Mets are willing to overpay in the AAV for less years, like Scherzer & Verlander. Why would a homegrown guy from the organization not expect that if he’s not getting long term security? His initial asks were crazy but he is a top 3-5 HR hitter in the league who still is in the 93rd percentile in bat speed and in the 80th percentile in hard hit rate so there is no reason to believe he won’t continue to be that for 3 years especially in the best lineup he would ever be apart of, heck there’s reason to believe he improves as he’s still above average in chase rate he just needs to become disciplined at not chasing 1 pitch, the low and away breaking ball.
@@mikev7766 The problem I find is that no one else is reported to have a offer on him so why are the Mets supposed to bet against themselves and give him 30 plus million or a long term? Because he is homegrown, give me a break
Mets need consistency in the infield... you don't want to move players in and out of position on a daily basis. If Pete leaves, the Mets need to choose their best option at first base from within, if someone better becomes available during the season - the Mets consider an acquisition....
@ Because he'll help the team and it won't at all put the billionaire owner out to pay for him ... not at all. This seems pretty straight-forward to me. As a Mets fan.
Pete did not perform so well under the pressure of his walk year last season. Imagine Pete underperforming because of the pressure of a new contract he demanded.
You don’t think if Cohen wanted Alonso bad enough he wouldn’t be involved? Has it occurred to you, at all, that Cohen is OK not resigning Alonso OR Cohen has spoken with Stearns and is happy with Stearns’ plan? Literally NO ONE wants Alonso so why do you guys have such a hard on for the Mets to sign him right now? There’s clearly something about him that has caused 29 other teams to not want him and the only team that may sign him to be slow in doing so.
@@TheQuack27 Stearns is staying strong in negotiations, which he is supposed to do, especially with Boras. After last year, I think we should trust him. He has a proven record in negotiations and in building rosters. Boras would have played Billy Eppler like a fiddle by now - overpaying Pete in years and dollars.
It’s typical Stearns. And Mets fans love it. They love when he signs castaways at league minimum and they cream their pants when this waivers level player marginally overachieves. Stearns thinks he’s still in Milwaukee but by all means “LeT StEaRnS cOoK”

You guys who are worried about a billionaire overspending by $20 million for a homegrown Met who is going to shatter Mets records with just 3 more seasons are all needs and clowns who really need to touch grass. You dorks want to teach Pete a lesson for turning down 7/158 and that’s more important to you than winning. You’d rather move Vientos to 1B and play automatic out Baty at 3rd so Soto can walk 160 times this year? 39 years without a championship because of this kind of petty nonsense that allows David Stearns to shop on the clearance rack and all you guys can muster is “LeT StEaRnS CoOk”. With Soto on base at a .430 clip it’s almost a sure thing Pete returns to 40-110 form. You guys are seriously opposed to 3/100 when we just paid Soto 800? But by all means, let’s ask Vientos to replace Pete at cleanup and have Baty hit .212 with 8 HR in 520 AB. You guys are wrong about almost everything.
Remember the 1st astronauts making their space walk from the ship, a dangerous new adventure - Lost in Space? sure feels like Pete is dangling out their in the virtual weight of nothingness floating around
Alonso should be batting second. Teams won’t pitch around Lindor to get to Alonso if he has Soto behind him protecting him. Top four should be Lindor, Alonso, Soto and Vientos.
Looking at a deal stacked with performance options. Even for a base of $25M / year, add $5M for 100+ RBI's, another $5M for 40+ HR's, another $5M for a gold glove, and $10M for a World Series, each year; then Pete could get a 5 or 6 year contract, worth up to $50M per year; potentially $300M. More likely it will pay in the $200M range over those 6 years; but that's a good deal too for Pete and the Mets. He will always sell a lot of jerseys too, as he is a fan favourite!
Collective bargaining agreement does not allow bonus based on performance stats. You can base it on games played at bats but not hrs, rbis. Or batting avg.
what's a fair aav. There is a good chance pete gonna be striking out 200 times a season in a couple of years. i'd say 110 for 5 years is fair but Pete's not gonna take that
Disagree. There are few hitters with Pete's power. He has hit more HRs in his years with the Mets than any other hitter in the NL. That is valuable. And as much as people love to talk about "market value" for Pete right now, nobody wants to revisit his "market value" in his past ... because he has been grossly underpaid up until now ... when he finally hits FA. If Pete had been allowed to seek a "market contract" after his first year -- in which he hit 53 HRs and firmly established himself as the top HR hitter in the NL -- he would have made a ton of money. But the rules didn't let him access the market. So, Pete ... after establishing the all-time rookie record for HRs -- was only able to earn well less than $1 million. And nobody cared. Nobody said "why shouldn't he get a market value?" NOBODY. And now when he finally hits free agency, everyone is jumping on the "market value" bandwagon. Pete simply needs to accept "market value." Now. He was barred from seeking "market value" before ... but now he just has to accept market value. This sickens me. It is a clear indication of why the richest among us always win. The billionaires are never expected to pay. It is always about "greedy" players who want too much money. Makes me want to vomit.
Pete has been severely underpaid to this point. He's been productive at an elite level and DID NOT receive market value for that production. Now when payday comes and he's clearly trying to make things work for the Mets, they're playing hardball after throwing a massive contract at Soto, who's yet to do a thing for this organization. They need Pete to maximize the effectiveness of Soto. Sign him already.
Mets offered him 7 years 156 million and passed, this is on him
