Yeah you're right, there should have been 20 dedicated characters, each race and gender, who are written specifically for this purpose. Maybe 3 or 4 Nord options of each gender because it's set in skyrim. It doesn't mean they have to be extremely fleshed out or that they can't be involved in other quests. They could even be won over by doing relatively small things, the point is that they exist to be a good wife or husband option with unique dialogue and story around it. The worst issue is that Bethesda seemed to just pick a bunch of npcs out of a hat at the very end of the development cycle, inevitably making a lot of dumb mistakes.
Maybe if skyrim was a dating sim or the NPCs had any personality at all, marriage might have been a cool feature. Can you imagine being married to a skyrim NPC? A boring plank of wood that spits the same generic radiant dialogue at you on repeat until death do you part?
Hahaha yeah, true. I feel that many people see it as just one of the other things to do on the Skyrim checklist. Though I don’t feel like the game has to devolve into a dating sim in order to have decent romantic characters. Fallout 4 kinda-ish did this well to an extent with the companions, but they eventually all just devolved into the same stats and numbers as well. New Vegas’ sexual encounters felt very natural, and while Morrowind only had a handful of “romantic interests”, they felt more real because thought was put into their romantic interest in the player;)
Honestly the whole marriage system feels like it was just tacked on last minute. I only ever married a character once and it was Ingun Black-Briar after I used console commands to put her in the marriage faction.
I once married a resurrected Breya, just because she looked and sounded more interesting than all vanilla options. But I share the same sentiment about the system feeling tacked-on. It doesn’t really serve any purpose, and without any DLC it literally does nothing worthwhile.
Sooooo… This was actually the only script I’ve ever written which I didn’t immediately use for a video. It dates back to January of this year, I didn’t cover it back then because I just didn’t think there’d be a market for it. I don’t think there’s a market for it now, either, but now feels better ;) Also, I mentioned 30 female marriage candidates, but I only covered 29. I forgot the Dragonborn DLC’s Hilund, who funnily enough was my first wife. But she also had a fetch quest, so you’re not missing out on much. Cheers☝🏼
Farkas and vilkas is understandable, you go through dustmans cairn and part of ysgramors tomb with farkas, share the beast blood and can help him with quests. Same for vilkas, except you only really travel to ysgramors tomb with him and the fact you (possibly) share the sentiment of wanting to seek revenge against the silver hand and keep your beast blood. Aela I can 100% see why she would marry you, as you two went on several hunts to do things such as clearing ysgramors tomb, clearing the silver hand fort, avenging skjor, doing quests for her and the fact you literally drank her blood to become a werewolf.
There is a reason why serana was so popular among fans, she had an actual story. However, bethesda never intended her to be a love interest, and it moved fans to take action by creating romance/marriage mods. Its funny considering fallout 4 seemingly took a lesson from this with their limited amount of followers. I wonder if starfield will continue this, and if elder scroll 6 will follow up on it... when it releases in 2030.
The affinity system and 'romances' of Fallout 4 shows that the current BGS staff can do better than they did with Skyrim if they focus on a smaller number of characters over a longer period of time. They still are not the greatest but leagues better than the checklist item marriages of Skyrim.
Knowing the Elder Scrolls, I honestly don’t think they’d mind haha. But give me romance mechanics over Fallout 4’s settlement mechanics any time of the day:)
I accidentally discovered marriage in Skyrim when I returned Grimsever to Mjoll, and I thought "cool!"..... until Aerin showed up and stuck around, divorce was not an option. He would eat my food in my manor overlooking a lake, he would sleep IN MY BED, and then talk about my wife to me. I then decided enough was enough. I waited until Mjoll and Aerin were asleep, and then I stealth killed Aerin with my soul-trapping ebony dagger. I then used his worthless soul to reenchant the dwarven sword of devouring that I had stolen off of Mercer Frey weeks prior and then dragged his body into my trophy room. anyway, I just really dislike how you can't divorce naturally in the vanilla game.
Yeah, haha, this is both a great example of the stupidity of the generic behaviors not adjusting for marriage, as the lackluster options for marriage. Never understood why they didn’t just gave the option to reset afterwards.
For me, my problem with the system isn't the the options that were given, but the options that aren't even there. The idea that a courtship with Frea to me would've made some sense. Yeah, sure, you did cause her dad to die, but Storn went along with it. Serana being not a fan of the Aedra even after being cured of her vampirism also didn't make a whole lot of sense to me, and she's the one that makes the most sense as a spouse out of literally all NPCs. If any one, I'd see her hating the Daedra, especially Molag. Cicero would've also been another choice, even if a bit weird of one. This is because of your interactions with him being unique. To me, the housecarls made sense, but I feel it'd've been better if you had to have them follow you over a period of time for them to even be an option.
Those are actually some great points there. I’ll be completely honest, I even forgot Serana existed for a moment. But her and Frea are way better candidates than the vanilla game ones because you actually spend some actual time together whilst seeing them evolve as characters. Thinking about that, a marriage dialogue option for Neloth would’ve been nice to, even if it was only for a joke - he’s a pretty great character and one of the few standouts, similar to the aforementioned Cicero. A romance with him could also bring some interesting concepts to the table, which we sadly lack now.
If they imolelemented companions more akin to FNV (i.e. having a realy personal quest and then making a romance option unique to the charachter (imperials usualy go for church blessed marriage, nords just get together and wrestle in bed and get at most a legal thing done, orcs do orcish stuff at strongholds and the list goes on.) it could have worked...
i think the idea with the house carls and followers is you have been adventuring with them for awhile, thus there is a relationship there. so when you propose to them, there is that existing relationship. i dont think they where expecting people to speedrun it.
Ysolda would be so much better if the two other quests involving her affected the relationship in someway; especially the sanguine one; forgot there was anything between her and Mikael tbh (well it seems one-sided but still forgot about it), struggle to believe Mikael is capable of settling down, (maybe exposing his behaviour to Ysolda would've been good but struggle to believe anyone in whiterun doesn't know) Aela also definitely shouldn't have been a candidate since she's very heavily implied to be in love with skjor and seemingly plans to end up in the after-life with her based on her being the only surviving companion you cant cure.
Ooh, yeah, definitely some good points made about Aela. As for Ysolda, it would’ve been an easy fix indeed. Since it makes sense for her to be interested in romance while Mikael isn’t really the steadfast type. A couple lines of dialogue would’ve gone a long way.
I actually thought that Erdi would have been an excellent missed opportunity as well. Good call! And you're right, the marriage system is ridiculous the way it is lol. I basically just get a wife and kids for passive income and items. Hopefully ES6 will be better.
Skyrim marriage is straight to the point with no romantic pretentious bullshit. At least you get to pick who to marry. In many cultures and especially during medieval harsh times, you had no free will. Parents picked the partner for you purely based on how it benefited their own life, not yours. You got forcefully married to someone with zero attraction. In Skyrim, if there's slight attraction based on looks and a pleasant voice, it's good enough. No meaning of getting to know anyone deeply, cause they might get killed by a dragon next day. Skyrim marriage is a "been there, done that" or "learn from mistake" kind of thing. No need of getting re-married. You get a achievement trophy for the effort and that's enough to be kept happy. Pretty much how it should be in real life.
To be fair, just to correct the record, the marriage requirement for the college students is not actually to become arch-mage but to finish their personal quests. Either way this makes it only marginally better. Definitely wish there were more options around it, in relationships with NPC's in general, both romance and friends, as well as rivals and nemesis'. Make it a true RPG. Hope they do better in TES:6 on the RPG side of things, but my personal gut feeling tells me they're going to streamline more and abandon the RPG element even more. Focusing more cheap action than on intrigue. Could be me doomering a bit about it though.
you know, after going through an entire guilds quest line, and working your way up to the very top of it, is it really so crazy to believe people in it could end up falling for your character though?
I didn't even know Ysolda had a boyfriend. Is it mentioned in game? Do they talk? If they do, then i must have missed. I don't really marry in Skyrim. I've tried it but never felt like it was worth it.
Yeah, she has a couple lines referencing her interest in Michael, though nothing all too obvious. Mikael doesn’t really mention her though, he just seems to sleep around.
I feel guilty for having Isolda as my first wife. I think I was just folowing a tutorial or something. I really can't tell who I would marry in this game. Probably Derkeetus or the girl from Shor's Stone with broken leg. How many characters in the game can you marry by throwing a piece of armor in front of them? I am sure that it is possible to marry someone that way.
Conceptually that would work, yeah. All of them have that behavior randomly assigned and once their disposition is increased, you’re good to go. But I won’t blame someone for following a tutorial. I just looked up a list and decided which one would be interesting without really encountering someone in-game at all.
Originally the marriage system would have allowed you to marry enemies like flame atronachs and other humanoid monsters. However as they were going to go about this, bethesda realized it would bring up more questions like, can you communicate with the monsters, could you get hurt trying to breed with them (ex the flame atronachs burning someone's private parts off)
