May J Blige has always been so pretty to me. I can't believe she thought she was always ugly. She looks so much like Naomi Campbell. And we know she isn't ugly.
Mary messed up in the beginning. She didn't harmonize on the first chorus. Mary made Ree go higher and work her higher register more than she probably wanted to.
@@KultivateWitKah So essentially Mary had Aretha shook by the way she was dressed…and in true diva fashion Aretha had to be petty and take her on vocally…noted 😎
Two iconic singers. Two generations. One moment in history. _VH1 Divas_ gave _everyone_ and their mama their flowers. It was an event each and every year. Too bad VH1 broke tradition and diluted itself from what it once was all those years ago. RIP to the Queen.
@@sheroderickjohnson Donna Summer performed at DIVAS back in '99 aa a stand-alone show. Teena was more R&B (her entire career) than pop and Natalie by then was more of a jazz artist although she was initially an R&B artist when debuted. Soul Train and BET gave them their props though.
@@DavidRichardson95 I agree but they could have at least appear once on the show. Instead of giving us Chaka Khan, Mary J, or Celine for the thousandth time lol
Love them both both this was not a good duet. I don’t feel Aretha was letting it flow like it should have. It’s always been known that Aretha always wanted the shine more on the stage and she always went off the script. Meanwhile when Mary and Whitney took the stage together to do Aretha’s song, they tore that stage down sounding phenomenal together.
There was some backstage tension, Aretha’s was being Aretha … Mary had to fight through this performance, it was more forced. Aretha wouldn’t let MJB ab-lib without busting through !!! Lmfao gotta love Aretha
Just for the record until any of these singers sit down at a piano and sang at the same time, sings opera, jazz, blues, gospel, soul, r&b, pop, disco, country, beep bob.
I think Aretha just loves to improvise and Ad-lib, and it can come across like she is competing. Like someone else mentioned, I think she just feels the music, and she is herself. All the talk of her trying to show shade to Mary or outdo her is all crazy talk. Mary is an entirely different artist than Aretha. After all, they were in New York, so Aretha had to bring it, and so did Mary in her own way. They both entertained well this night.
Aretha was always going to keep anyone she was singing with in check. Aretha knows Mary can hold her own. I think her Aretha was trying to push Mary in a friendly way. They both have soul and can growl like nobody's business lol.
@@K0961 I agree. Fascinating to feel a lot of tension and a lot of respect at the same time btw aretha and Mary. U can feel that same vibe on never gonna break my faith or other live appearances from Mary in Front of Aretha. Tension is 💯 😅

Mary seemed confused on where she was supposed to begin singing. Did Aretha go off script? LOL. They sounded a mess together. Aretha sounds good because its her song, but Mary should have sat this one out.
I think Mary sound good singing with her. I don't understand Aretha?!! Mary look like she wanted to embrace Aretha but Aretha was just so standoffish and not having it?? Aretha has always had an ego the size of her LITERALLY!!
while historical as both these ladies are icons, this is actually not a great performance as neither of them really shines or sound good as a duo... they are both performers that command the stage by themselves and are song stylists and it just doesn't flow or sound cohesive on any level with the both of them... as if they didn't practice together at all

The Queen Of Soul with The Queen Of Hip Hop Soul. So glad Aretha had Mary there to sing with her. This is history.

Lol I was just saying damn Aretha was shutting Mary down... Every time Mary tried to get loud Aretha got louder...Man I miss these type of singers..

Yes and no. I think Vh1 Divas did give some a chance. But miss the mark by not letting Natalie, Donna Summer or Teena Marie be on the show

You can see when it was Mary turn to come in Aretha was still singing. Lol this was not friendly like the one with Mariah
You know I tried not to look at it like that but Aretha was kind of stand offish with MJB. MJB was humble but also not kissing no ass lol!!
