  • Little Walter (May 1, 1930 February 15, 1968) Although Little Walter might not have been the first person to amplify the harmonica, his pioneering use of the microphone helped establish the modern blues harmonica. With a mike clasped to his harp, Little Walter created echoing, moaning, hornlike sounds that redefined the capabilities of the instrument. Walter Jacobs had fourteen top ten hits on the R&B charts in the 1950s including two number #1 songs Juke and My Babe. Little Walter toured and recorded extensively with blues great Muddy Waters in the 1950s. He also recorded with Jimmy Rogers, Memphis Minnie, Otis Rush and Bo Diddley. Little Walters influence was pervasive, especially in England where the next generation of harp players such as Mick Jagger listened to his records over and over.

Little Walter was one of the most influential and innovative musicians who ever lived. He invented amplified blues harmonica. Without LW, there would be no James Cotton, no Junior Wells, no Paul Butterfield, no Charlie Musselwhite, no Rod Piazza, no Carey Bell, no Mark Hummel. He left a gigantic, immensely creative and varied body of work, which everyone who has ever picked up a harmonica has been enamored of, and influenced by.

I give it three because I love the Blues and Little Walter. I wanted to give it one because not only did Ben Harper not seem to have a clue that he was dragging behind and dragging down the classic tune of a Blues master, but neither did he seem to have a clue that he was sitting right next to one, and should have been playing off that harp, which was the whole reason he was there, not going off on some Eddie-Van-Halen-does-slide-guitar tangent.

For those who didn't know, the harp player in this video is James Cotton, a great Blues harp player in his own right. He simply had nothing to work with in Ben Harper.

I've been playing harmonica most of my life. To me, Little Walter is and always will be my legendary blues harmonica hero. The very name Little Walter is synonymous with the word harmonica. In fact, in my mind, Little Walter is embodied in each and every harmonica manufactured and played today and for years to come.

No doubt Little Walter and Sonny Boy Williamson II were the two most influencial harp players ever, and both were good singers and great song writers as well..
There is a whole catalog of songs we all still sing that Little Walter wrote...

Its Great that Little Walter finally gets some
cudo's I guess. It's well deserved. As for "My
Babe" tribute...I've always dug and respected
Cotton for his own life's contribution to the
blues & to the harp. I could never diss James.
But someone shoulda told Ben Harper about not
    taking the brown acid....

  • @z1522

James Cotton was Walter's replacement in Muddy Waters' band; live in the mid 70's, his harp licks were like razor flicks, and he'd strut through the crowd blowing like a hurricane, but here I believe he'd come back from cancer and could no longer sing. His playing was clearly declining as well, but still a living connection to Walter knew how to play the blues, no matter the physical limitations. Harper seems like many today, Gary Clark Jr. et al, who act all hip, but always make it about them somehow. The Blues was about surrendering to the needs of the song, not flashing your ego chops around. Just be glad Walter was given some recognition at a normally superficial event that no longer has enough respectful talent to really pay homage to the groundbreakers.

"You also noted that Sonny Boy was a great, which he was, but his teacher, Howlin' Wolf, or Chester Burnett, is also a legend. "
You've got it backwards - Rice Miller, a/k/a Sonny Boy Williamson II, taught Howlin' Wolf to play harp, not the other way around.

I can't believe Harper cut the famous Walter solo in half. Cotton should have walked off (although judging from his size, that might have been difficult).Just shows how clueless Harper was when it came to the blues and what a terrible choice he was to induct one of the all-time greats.

Little Walter was absolutely amazing, and the way he and his band members (originally Muddy Waters and the great Jimmy Rogers) wove the instruments together was pure artistry.
But why Ben Harper?? Why the absolutely inappropriate distorted hard rock style solo on his steel?? . He doesn't appear to have a clue how the original Chicago Blues should sound, how the harp and other instruments interact to make the music so unique.
There were, at the time of this induction, still several original Little Walter era players that would and should have been playing to honor the great Little Walter Jacobs.
Harper had the great James Cotton next to him, and failed to interact with him to get the feel that is so necessary!! The rest of the band (including Cotton of course) sounded great!

I really like Ben Harper and am a fan of his music but this was not good. He was a poor choice for this way over due recognition of a giant. His playing was also inappropriate for this masterpiece as well dragging it and the great James Cotton down. A very poor representation for Jacobs. A vitally important and influential musician whose brilliant innovation on harp remains unmatched, his tragic genius unchallenged. He deserved better.

I can understand true Little Walter fans being upset at this performance. However, let;s look at it from the post side of things. We already know, Little Walter was the best harp player ever. So anything else is post him. Now!...Let's remeber this was a tribute to this legendary icon of Blues. I think it was exceptable. They delivered a rendition of his sound. And for that we thank God for gracing us with one as such. God bless little Walter. Indeed a legend in and out of time.

Well...I thought it was an excellent performance by Harper and James Cotton. Harper never ceases to amaze me. He was one of the best performers in the great "Standing in the Shadows of Motown" film and he acquitted himself very well here. I saw James Cotton many years ago...didn't know he was still around, when he had the James Cotton Blues Band. They'd be the opening act for the great artists of the late sixties era around Atlanta.

That was pretty bad. The blues is just folk music, it drives me crazy when people take it so damn seriously. I normally like Ben Harper, but that presentation (and the musical number...what the hell was up with that guitar tone in a Little Walter song?
