I think the whole tread what bit is that she's having to do something repeatedly to stop her self from "drowning"

I don't know if this is helpful, but I understand the song like this: In the first two verses, Sara is painting a picture (musically) of feelings of longstanding loneliness and how hard it is. In the chorus, she expands on this theme -- I think the imagery of the changing harbour lights are about wanting something good to happen to her, or even more concretely, add light to the darkness, which is a great metaphor for depression. But in the bridge, she's comes back to say that while she feels hopeless, she knows she can go on: "you can't count me out; i'm used to the water now". And in the final chorus, she changes the lyrics to reflect the inner strength she knows she has -- language about life being harder than she'd like it to be but not more than she can take. So the metaphor of treading water ultimately means that she may be in the water, but she's strong enough to keep herself from drowning. So it's sad and yet hopeful at the same time. Does that help? Just my take on it. :)

@@flight144t That is SUCH a lovely compliment -- thank you so much. If only I could write poetry like Sara... :) But seriously, thank you -- this note made my day!
