May 8, 1942, Battle of the Coral Sea. Lieutenant Stanley "Swede" Vejtasa from Scouting Squadron FIVE (VS-5) in an SBD Dauntless, is in patrol over the aircraft carrier U.S.S. YORKTOWN (CV-5). Fate has a surprise for Vejtasa and his rear gunner, Radioman 3rd Class Frank B Wood, as they are forced to face off in battle against the deadly Zero. Not one, but 3 of them. The chances of the relatively slow bomber surviving the clash are extremely slim. There can only be one winner in this one-sided battle, but despite the odds, can the Dauntless prevail?

Can you pls make a ww2 tank video i am realy interested in that
I love hearing about battles with long odds regardless of whether they're individuals or whole people's. And you chose one great story Yarnhub.
The fact that are real stories from WW2 is amazing
Naw ww2 never happened lad 😅
The fact your name is Germanballein talking about WW2 is insane
@mattlad2004 exactly fs, was just a collective mirage on a really hot European day.
@@isaacrobinson240lol we all had our WW2 Phases as a kid, let him enjoy.
@@mattlad2004u clearly never studied war history how about the Spartans vs Pers? Did that not happen?
This is crazy!!! 1 dive bomber is not supposed to be able to tackle 1 zero, not to mention 3 and come out of it alive! Totally incredible!!!!!
It goes to show that it doesn't matter the number of forces you bring doesn't matter how advanced your equipment is if you don't have the wit you lose its been seen in history
Ww2 the ancient greek Spartans hell even a bomber plan to be 3 zeros
Actually the Douglas SBD, without a bombload, was a surprisingly nimble aircraft. Not very fast, but incredibly strong with two forward firing machine guns, she could do more than just "lay eggs"! I heard somewhere they were actually used as escorts in a pinch. My favorite WW2 aircraft.
Yes, during WWII the Dauntless shot down more enemy planes than it was itself shot down.
I let out a breath I didn't notice I was holding after the last Zeke. A diy RUclips video isn't supposed to be more entertaining and exciting than a Hollywood flick 😅!
Reality is always more incredible than fantasy.
Plus they collided in mid air and sbd is still alive, jesus.
The fact he made a TRAILER for it its amazing
We’re going to start doing this for most films from now on

Bro his animations are better than some animated movies LIKE HOW DOES HE ANIMATE SOOOO GOOD?!?! 😮
It's a team and God damn is their team being paid good
the animation is decent, graphics is the one thats great. if you want sone good animation then i recommend a 27 min long 3d animated video called: Battle of Santa cruz island’s documentary
The animation of the character’s emotions and the dubbing are getting more realistic than the previous videos, I liked the way of dubbing in different languages for the characters from two different countries instead of just using English
Idk bat yea
the character voices are also getting good
I remember this story from my childhood. There was this TV programme "Dogfights", loved it so much.
I knew it!! I loved that show! And now my favorite RUclips channel is showing the story from my younger days!! It’s amazing!

My question is, why not just fire when the Dauntless was in his crosshairs?
@@anunprofessionalfrog1180 It was a trick to make the dauntless think the guy ran out of ammo. And that meant the dauntless wouldn’t care even if it was in the zero’s crosshairs
@@inff3rno yeah, but the Dauntless was already in its crosshairs, so what was the point of delaying it?
@@anunprofessionalfrog1180To make it an easier target. Its harder to hit someone is actively evading than someone who isn't. He made them think that he didn't have ammo so they would stop flying defensively and try to outrun him which would make them an easy target.
Swede Vejtasa is a madman facing three Zeros in a friggin Bomber. I remember this from History Channel's Dogfights in their "Long Odds" episode (Bombers vs Fighters) and as one pilot said, they sit on thr shoulders of giants like Swede Vejtasa purely because of the unbelievable feats they did in their service. There are differences on the plots from that episode as the collision from the third Zero on Dogfights was frontal while here, they had a collision while performing a "Flat Scissors" maneuver.
Anyway. Details aside. I loved every bit of this... And seriously excited about the "To be Continued" on the end credits. 😁
I understand that, after being changed to manning a fighter (F4F Wildcat), he managed Ace in a Day - with a couple to spare. In the end, Vejtasa won the Navy Cross both for dive bombing and aerial combat - the only pilot to do so.
Yarnhub have done old 666 and now they've done this one, all they are missing from that dogfights episode I think is the F-105 vs multiple MiGs
I am perplexed. If this is the same incident covered by Dogfights it was presented very differently like a series of head on attacks and sharp 180° turns by both Vejtasa and the Zeroes. Even the mid air collision with the last Zero was different as during a head on attack, not scissors. I wonder who got it right.
Yes, the History channel Dogfights (S1, E9), totally different sequence of events. You have to believe the Dogfights version as Swede himself is giving the play by play. No offense to Yarnhub, I still absolutely love this channel !!!!
@@MrMarco6900 That's what I thought too. Yarnhub's version is more cinematic and enjoyable though. Also IIRC Dogfights does not mention Vejtasa using his diving brakes to make a Zero overshoot him as they were never on his six to begin with.

So true!
The best thing I like about Captain Vetesa is his ability to stay calm under pressure. He was one of so many aviators in the pacific theater that contributed in the early years of the war. A true dogfighter he was.🫡
Were so ready. I hope USS Enterprise will get a video. She deserves recognition no matter the era post her service in WW2.
I think the Enterprise has had enough series about it (Next Generation being the best), time for something new.
@@SunSailandSand The USS Enterprise (CVN-65) (until 1975 CVAN-65) was an aircraft carrier of the United States Navy. Commissioned in 1961, the ship was the first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and for many years the largest warship in the world. Even after being replaced by the USS Nimitz as the largest warship in 1975, she was still the longest warship in the world at 342.3 meters. The Enterprise was the eighth ship and second aircraft carrier of that name in the US Navy, after the World War II Enterprise. She was the first and only of a class of aircraft carriers originally planned to consist of six ships, which were not built for cost reasons. The Enterprise served for more than 50 years[1] and took part in all major US Navy operations, including the naval blockade of Cuba, the Vietnam War and the First Gulf War. More recently, it also took part in the war on international terrorism and the Iraq War. On December 1, 2012, the Enterprise was deactivated and finally decommissioned on February 3, 2017.[2] She was replaced by USS Gerald R. Ford, commissioned on July 22, 2017.[3][4] The name of the ship will in the future be adopted by the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN-80), which is currently under construction.
@@SunSailandSand I think it's more in the way of Battle 360.

I would love it if Yarnhub did a video on the Monchy 9 of Newfoundland. 9 men of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment positioned at Monchy-le-Preux during the Battle of Arras in 1917 hid behind shrubbery and defended the town from a German force anywhere from 200 - 300 men strong for 11 hours to prevent a German break through. I think it is a very cool and very underrated battle that sounds like the plot of a movie.
There were ten men not 9.
@@SunSailandSand I’m aware, I was more referring to the soldiers of the Newfoundland Regiment, as I’m a Newfoundlander, but there was also member of the Essex Regiment.
This video truly deserves a trailer as it it no less than a movie....the days Yarnhub posts are the best days of the week!!
This confirms what I have always said, that it is the pilot, not the aircraft who determines the result of a combat. If the pilot is skilled, and knows how to use his aircraft, he can beat a technically superior plane but with a less capable pilot.
I think this is one of the best dog fights story's i ever heard, good job yarnhub, amazing video/animations and sound efects.
As a Papua New Guinean, thank you Yarnhub for telling the lesser known stories of these brave men who fought in the area around my country whether on land, at sea or in the air.Massive respect ❤
I knew this story from my childhood. My Great-uncle was a dive-bomber as well as torpedo pilot. My father flew A-4 Skyhawks so I grew up in a Naval air household. I want to thank you all who made this story come to life.
I’m honestly amazed at this feat of piloting. One would think that turnfighting a zero even in a purpose built fighter would be a death sentence. This guy is an absolute madlad
My dad, who had a dad that was sensitive about war, absolutely LOVES your content. I show him some of your videos and he loves it.
I remember how once when i was showing him a video about planes in the pacific here, i don't remember which, but when a fighter missed the target he said
"HELVETTE, SIKTA OCH SKJUT! SÅ JÄVLA LÄTT!"

I've always love these WW2 stories, especially from Swede Vejtasa, who's from the very same State that I'm from, and that's Montana!!🥳🎉👍

The SBD in SBD-3 stands for slow but deadly
"Scout Bomber Douglas" is what it actually stands for, but "Slow But Deadly" was its nickname.
I absolutely LOVE the new style where you add all the voiceovers and make it almost into a short movie!!! It's spectacular!
It's not the plane, it's the pilot.
At the beginning of WWII, the zero one of the best planes, but it was designed in such a way, improvements couldn't be installed _(realistically speaking)_ the allied planes got better and better and eventually they surpasssed the Zero. It also helped that the U.S. had the natural resources and manufacturing capability that Japan didn't. We were able to build planes meant specifically to fight the Zero, like the Corsair. Japan couldn't keep up with our industry and engineering. Interestingly, the Zero couldn't be upgraded like our F-22 currently. _(But the F-35 can.)_
In reality, it's both.
I will be ready to watch this when i come home from school :) for me it starts at 4:15 pm and i'll be home by 4:10 pm!

Well, then we are at least two here. And i agree that his heroism should be recognized even here.

Just for a Bf109 to show up and steal the kills lol
Sometimes you just don't have a choice and it's fight to survive. That Dauntless didn't have the speed to escape. The zeros would have shot them up from behind while trying to escape.
"Makes sense; only an idiot would be brave enough to pull off those moves."

I remember watching this part in another video called dogfights: long odds where bombers, which includes dive bombers, are outmached by fighters
10:07 the Japanese pilot's head clips through the glass a bit. Other than that, another sublime piece of animation. Well done boys! And props to the voice actors again.
10gs is crazy. Pilots would start to 'gray-out' around 6-7. No wonder the rear gunner passed out.
In the early 2000s Swede Vejtasa (passed 2013) was interviewed as part of the History Channel's Dogfights series. Its in the episode 'Long Odds'. He's so animated, so connected to the detail and emotion even 60 years later its a must see, AFTER mr Yarnhub's feature of course.
I can't tell if Swede was extremely smart, extremely lucky, or extremely insane. Perhaps it's a mix of all three
The Animations are a lot better then last year

The Zero was only lethal for its first few years. Because of lack of development it was outclassed by the Hellcat and especially the best fighter ever made; F4U Corsair.
Yes. But outclassed by a dive bomber? And three zeros outclassed by one dive bomber? That is just uncanny.
As a marine I took a lot of pride in knowing my history. After all who is he who does not know his history or what he fights for? I get the point on the Corsair. But let's be realistic. The F22 Raptor is the best fighter aircraft ever made and the one negative thing about the Marines is we use the Super Hornet since the F22 is not a carrier capable aircraft. But it is without a doubt deadlier than the upcoming F35B or C carrier models. Navy joke is we would fly F35s today but they're down for maintenance.
It wasn't the Zeke that made General Kenny scream for P-38s, but rather the Tony. The IJA had the benefit of not being limited to carrier capable aircraft, but could field more capable fighters. IJN was sort of stuck. The Zeke may have been well ahead of it's time, but it struggled even with the F4F with the F4F having a surprisingly better kill ratio. But then, the thing was nigh indestructible, and the Zeke had sacrificied everything for range and speed, and so was rather vulnerable.
Interestingly the F6F, F4U, and P-47 are all cousins in some sense. They all had the same powerplant. F6F had better attributes for naval operations though. Shorter nose, better visibility, and more stable flight characteristics until they solved the F4U's left wing stalls.
THANK YOU FOR THESE VIDEOS!
I love that you insert actual photos of the people involved to pay homage to them.
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!
Its amazing how smart and experienced both the pilots at the end were, the dive bomber surviving this long feels like plot armour but its real, and the zero pilot countering his airbrakes with turns is crazy.

The book, "The First Team" highlights the unsung heroes. Many enlisted pilots in their late 20s, who were more mature, steady, held the line. The shortage of fighters up through Guadalcanal meant SBDs were pressed into service as carrier combat air patrol. The SBD, free of bomb weight, was still slow BUT very maneuverable, particularly with judicious use of flaps in a turn twin front .50cal and twin .30cal aft meant it could be a formidable opponent in skilled hands. The Zeroes had no radios at the time so coordinating attacks was hard.
Superb animation! Just some minor thing, Zero's radio was so unreliable the pilots remove it to cut weight. They opted to communicate by hand signals. The zeke to zeke radio communication was highly unlikely.
I love seeing that the videos are getting better in terms of quality as time goes on!

Everyone is talking about the animation, rightly so, but can we talk about the voice acting? Like, damn they got some real professional voice actors here, screaming into their mics. It's fantastic.
Dauntlesses can be maneuverable dogfighter if you use combat flaps in a turning engagements. Also sbd dauntless had the advantage against the zero in terms of dive speed, armor plating, and deadly two mounted nose 50 cals that could easily shred and burn the fragile a6m2 zero into flames.
I thought the SBD's carried NOTHING above their engine cowling or at the most a single .30 cal for any head on entanglement. Just learned something new today...
Swede Vejtesa. Bomber vs Fighters. Love it.
What a cool story! I love the ingenuity of using the little advantages to defeat a superior foe!
Animation … beautiful, excellent quality. Many thanks!
Absolutely amazing! Great story, great visuals, and great narration! Just one small suggestion for the next one!
Among a perfect animation like this, there will always be one or two small gripes, so here’s my constructive criticism:
In the slow motion scene of the Zero firing it’s 20mms, the vortex effects suddenly spawn in and even have their tails appear behind the muzzle of the cannon. I suggest that the effect should be tied to every bullet permanently, but have the alpha tied to a gradient in the coordinate space of the airplane. That way, they smoothly appear trailing the bullet. Because of the conical shape you already have for the model, it would even expand as the bullet flies away!
In blender (assuming that’s the software of choice), this would be done with a texture coordinate, set to object (use the eye dropper to select the zero), a vector transformation node, a color ramp, and plugging it all into the alpha channel of the vortex effect (you already have a semi transparent model, so no need to change the material settings)
Cheers, and thank you for making such amazing content!
This is Art, definitely... 🚬
