They wired it originally so the first GFCI will protect the fountain pump receptacle or direct wire by using the Load of the GFCI. The Line coming in is connected is to the GFCI Line and passed through to the Line side of the second GFCI and that (Load) side goes downstream to protect the other receptacles. This keeps the protections separate. Makes sense. No separate junction box would be necessary. You cannot wire one GFCI from the Load to a second GFCI and they didn't do that, so that was correctly done. That's my understanding based on your explanation.
When working with GFCI's try to avoid using the terms top and bottom because it's not universal. It's Line and Load as printed on the back of the receptacle. I'm sure that you are aware of that, but other people trying to learn from your video may not. Good job, Augie
You must be in the mid west, Illinois? (hot, muggy, and Menards). I'm in California, we have Lowe's and Home Depot, not Menards. I like Legrand receptacles, but nobody seems to carry them here, although their lower level commercial spec grade versions can be ordered from Home Depot.
