  • In this video we have a cab ride in a Class 158 round the Northern and General Main Line. The service is called The Ashpeth Circular and we are riding the last train on a Saturday evening, starting at Leefield Central. We call at Oakdale, Ashpeth and Morrington before returning to Leefield Central. The video quality inside the cab is poor due tot eh use of a very small camera.

    Hi Neil, very clever way of doing a layout tour 😁 The steadiness of the camera also goes to emphasise the quality of your track work 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Perhaps a way to improve the video quality would be to really flood the scene with light from a LED panel, worth practicing on a small area anyway 😉 As always really love the “Neil Time” trains information, it really makes the visit to Leefield & Ashpeth so special 😎 Best Wishes from County Wicklow ☘️

    • @neiloldie2433
      @neiloldie2433  4 года назад +1

      Thanks Paul. That is a very good idea. I don't have an LED panel but do have LED floods. I would probably need to someone to hold the flood while I control the train. I will give it a go once group members are allowed to visit and when the camera van has been repaired. Unfortunately when I replaced the batteries in the van, the back corner of the van split open and it has severed some connections. I will need the expertise of one of our members for that as well. All the Best and Stay Safe, Neil.

    Do you want a tip. For the final revering to depot you would need too driver as like in york to reverse on scarb line boothem Norm u find any driver to do the short run(have seen a them use a tpe driver) this is as there needs to be a driver in the cab at all times. So they can change direction as long as there is a driver in the cab when it changes. This is as it’s on a running like not a station. Once at ststion it would stop to let other driver off and carry on. I was surprised to see diff toc drivers not just northern only

    Hi Neil. Very different perspective on your layout showing all the scenic components and trackside detailing I aspire to.
    I have used a similar wireless camera in the past on my layout and the qulity of recording does suffer with distance.
    I have started using an SQ11 mini camera with some heath robinson mounting that records direct to a TF card and has no wireless connection to view live.
    Cheers Patrick

      Thanks Patrick. Good to hear from you! My camera van has just split so I will research the SQ11 mini camera, to see if I can get hold of one. Cheers, Neil.

    Excellent! I think layouts look much more impressive from a drivers eye view, even though it's more of a challenge in N. I'm currently using a Panasonic HX-A1M action camera for mine, although I suspect it's no longer available.

    Hi Neil, very enjoyable and I got to parts of your layout I didn't know were there.
    I would love to know what camera you used as my search for one small enough to fit N Gauge has been unsuccessful.

    • @neiloldie2433
      @neiloldie2433  4 года назад +1

      Hi Mark. Good to hear from you. I used an old spy camera bought from Ebay many years ago. It doesn't have brand name and, unfortunately, it is no longer available. A member of our N Gauge Group fitted it into a goods van. The pictures are transmitted by radio signals to a receiver mounted in the ceiling. Then cable to my laptop and the video is recorded using software called iGrabber. Cheers, Neil.

    What a great trip around your layout. What led signals are you using please.?

    • @neiloldie2433
      @neiloldie2433  4 года назад +1

      Hi Geoff. Glad you enjoyed the ride. The electric signals are a mixture of new and very old. All of the colour light signals around Leefield Central Station are from CR Signals. You can buy them as kits but I purchased the ready made signals. The signals at Ashpeth Station are also CR Signals but painted grey instead of white. Once you leave the station the signals are old home made signals using grain of wheat bulbs. (Showing my age now). Finally, the gantry near the end of the video is again from CR Signals. He will mount the signal heads wherever you want them to match your track layout. Cheers, Neil.

    Hi Neil. I haven't looked at your other videos (but I will), so I don't know whether you are running analogue DC, or DCC, or both. If both, I should like to know how to run either DC or DCC locos on the same layout, but, of course, not at the same time? I have both DC and DCC controllers that ideally could be connected to the layout at the same time, but one not actually switched on while another type is in operation. My controllers are 1) DC: Bachmann DC controller. 2) DCC: Digitrax DS210+ (part of the Evox starter set with the new DT602 handset). 3) Bachmann EZ-Command DCC controller. I have asked this question of another RUclipsr and the reply was how to run DCC locos with a DC controller by adjusting one of the decoder’s CV settings. Unfortunately, this does not solve my problem as this just ‘robs’ a DCC loco of most of DCC’s features.

    • @neiloldie2433
      @neiloldie2433  4 года назад

      Hi Paul, My layout is controlled by analogue DC. I have been developing this layout for 45 years and have far too many locos to change now. I love DCC and we use it on our group modules and if I was starting again I would use DCC. However, I am not aware that technology allows the free use of both power sources at the same time. Both power sources can be used on our modules, but when we tried to mix them my DC Class 08 was fried when someone accidentally changed a point.You could have both power sources linked to your layout with a switch that allows you to choose which one to use, but when switching to DCC you will need to remove all DC locos. Cheers, Neil.
