The British government paid reparations totaling £20 million (equivalent to some £300 billion in 2018) to slave owners when it abolished slavery in 1833. Banking magnates Nathan Mayer Rothschild and his brother-in-law Moses Montefiore arranged for a loan to the government of $15 million to cover the vast sum - which represented almost half of the U.K. governent’s annual expenditure.
The U.K. serviced those loans for 182 years from 1833 to 2015. The authors of the British reparations program saddled many generations of British people with a reparations debt for which they were not personally responsible.

@@kinginc2000 Yes, but a lot of those slave owners were Black also. It was a good way to stop the practice initially. I'm sure the free slaves were not complaining. It should also be noted a lot of that money was spent on the Anti slave Royal navy which chased down slaver ships in West Africa, blockaded Brazil until it banned slavery also, and went to war with the Arab slave trade on the East coast of Africa. All of this cost lots of money and lives. Sailors were also paid money for every slave they freed on any slaver ship

    • @kinginc2000

@@overthewebb Those were prisoners. Afterall, what did the slaves build in Africa? On top of that, the so called slave masters in Africa, were betrayed and turned into slaves by Europeans, Americans and Arabs. So to hear them try and say they paid slave owners, instead of the slaves, or the slaves they abandoned (Haitians, and Caribbean islands) is a joke. These countries were never paid any raparations. Britain, and the other slave owning countries out east, have been pointing fingers at the US, for decades. No it’s not that. You wanna know the reason? The African slave trade was the largest and longest forced migration in Human history.
Not only that, the legacy of slavery still exists today. Just look at European countries and how they treat Blacks.
Most Black people that I know, including myself don’t really care that slavery happened. We weren’t slaves and those whites around us weren’t slave owners, but what does bother us is that we are treated with disdain and overt racism, death, and all of that. That’s the real problem.

Or about slavery in general. People from the beginning made slaves out of people who looked just like them. They didn't have the technology to go anywhere else. They didn't have the technology to build an infrastructure. The world was built on the backs of slaves. Therefore we are all decended from slaves. In a larger scale all of Western Europe was enslaved by the Romans. This is how the world has worked and Africa is no different. As in other places larger tribes enslaved smaller tribes and worked them in Africa. When Europeans came along the coast they sold their fellow Africans to Europeans. The East Africa Slave Trade conducted, by the Arabs, had the Arabs actually go into Africa and enslave the people themselves. It goes on and on, until today where women and children are enslaved for sex and/ or labour.

European and American slavers exchanged goods for people with African traders along enormous stretches of West and Central Africa, even to Madagascar and southeastern Africa. But most Africans boarded slave ships in six distinct regions of the African coast: Upper Guinea, the Gold Coast, Bight of Benin, Bight of Biafra, West-Central Africa, and southeastern Africa. During the course of the transatlantic slave trade, nearly half of all African captives were taken from West-Central Africa (Congo and Angola today). The Bight of Benin (Togo, Benin, and Nigeria today) and the Bight of Biafra (covering approximately today’s Nigeria, Cameroon, and Gabon) accounted for a further 28 percent of embarkations on slave ships. These points of departure from Africa do not necessarily indicate the home regions of African victims, since vast networks of slave routes frequently funneled people to the coast from villages deep in the interior.Slaves: Shewing the Method of Chaining Them portrays two men chained to one another aboard the slave ship Favourite in 1805. As a result, those loaded onto European and American slave ships had already endured a number of passages of prolonged hardship long before their sale on the coast. After initial capture, African slavers might pass them through different African societies, through alien lands and cultures, for weeks, months, or years before confronting the most confusing of sights: European men, the Atlantic Ocean, and the slave ships. Though some were marched just a few miles to the coast, others had been forcibly marched hundreds of miles. It was a journey that took its toll on the African men, women, and children bound together by ropes, chains, or wooden yokes. Different forms of servitude had long been a feature of many African societies, and Africa had long-established slaving systems and slave routes, such as those across the Sahara Desert and along the Nile. These systems differed markedly from the transatlantic slave trade and racialized slavery that Europeans later developed to maximize plantation production in their colonies. There were various forms of indigenous African slavery, ranging from kinship arrangements to chattel slavery. Africans fell into slavery because of extreme poverty (as with children given away or sold by hungry families, for example), pawn slavery (which might be temporary), or violence, including warfare, slave raids, and kidnapping. Enslaved individuals could then be sold on to other communities in need of labor. There were child slaves and large holdings of enslaved people-upward of one thousand in number-by slave traders on the edge of the Sahara. There was, however, no single form of African slavery.
not my words but so true.
No one has to like Queen Elizabeth II. . But it is disingenuous to bemoan Queen Elizabeth's role in Africa's history, but remain deafeningly silent on the brutal empires of Nigeria's past - or any of the vast number of empires that pillaged, raped, murdered, and enslaved other Africans in that continent's history.

I mean, it’s not like the decedents of slaves treat on another any better in modern times. 13% of the racial population commits 50% of all homicides in the USA. Broken down by sex, and it’s more like 6.5%. Broken down by age, 15-39, almost 50% of all murders committed in the USA, are done by a mere 3% of the population. And they commit a large majority of those on their own. Facts don’t care about your feelings, eh?

He forgot to tell her that the first nation to abolish slavery was in fact Haiti 🇭🇹 1791-1804- he also didn’t provide any information that the African American 🇺🇸 slave reparations were technically given to the slave holders during the era when slavery had been abolished in America-December 6th 1865 & that these reparations were adamantly impeded upon through President Andrew Johnson-mind us that the first documented ethics of human servitude compensation was bestowed onto a prior slave named Belinda Royal, 1783-where she attained annually 15 pounds with inclusively 12 shillings. What Mr Lemon also did not incorporate was that the British has asserted mass European colonialism onto nearly the totality of the entire planet, through European totalitarianism, Asia, South & North Americas, Europe, Australis, Hawaii, The British Overseas Provinces, etc, within the indigenous Americas & India alone-British mass ascendancies are responsible for the lives lost at over 80 million indigenous people.

COLONIALISM is not slavery. She did not answer the question and went off on her personal slavery rant. Once slavery ended, Europeans began full invasions of countries, murdering, torturing, stealing etc….Neo Colonialism is still being practiced throughout the African continent. As Europeans refuse to remove their military from countries they colonized. She needs to be schooled, she is not informed. Furthermore, men that were in the EMPLOY of the British government to stop the transatlantic slave trade were EMPLOYED and compenstated by the British empire. The only parties to Slave Trade that have not compensated are the innocent slaves and their descendants.

you cannot pay "damages" to those who were damaged because they are dead. not sure if the law supports the descendants of slaves as heirs to $$ owed, if any, but they would need to round up all the required paperwork to prove their case. I won't hold my breath for that.

Except hati abolished slavery in 1793 little bit before britians in 1833 or the trading of them in 1807. Hati was essentially cut off from the white European world for this
1777 - State of Vermont, an independent Republic after the American Revolution, becomes first sovereign state to abolish slavery
1792 - Denmark bans import of slaves to its West Indies colonies, although the law only took effect from 1803.
1811 - Spain abolishes slavery, including in its colonies, though Cuba rejects ban and continues to deal in slaves.
1813 - Sweden bans slave trading
1814 - Netherlands bans slave trading
1817 - France bans slave trading, but ban not effective until 1826
1833 - Britain passes Abolition of Slavery Act, ordering gradual abolition of slavery in all British colonies. Plantation owners in the West Indies receive 20 million pounds in compensation

Errr .. paid back for what exactly?
Maybe go make a claim against all the US slave owners in the USA (including the Founding Fathers) who kept up slavery for another 90 years after the British left the 13 colonies and 50 years after the British outlawed slavery in its Empire. By the way there was no slavery in the UK itself or indeed in British North America (aka Canada).
