The "old guy", the bongo player, I saw at the Palladium Ballroom in Tito Puente's band maybe 1963. I went there just to see how a bongo player integrated himself into a latin orchestra - a task impossible to learn from records since one could not visualize who was playing what. There I learned the left hand on the macho coming just before the beat. Like me, he was just a kid, but oh, how he played! What I did not learn, perhaps because Puente's band was so large, is that usually in a small band setting the bongo player switches to cowbell, as he does here. That, I learned from listening (with much sharper ears) later. I still enjoy listening to this style latin music but...most of the musicians are schooled - they play what is appropriate - and the rhythms, the changes from 2 or 4 to 3 or 6 are all learned from the people like the "old guy Dandy" - Tito - Mongo- Rodriguez, Palnieri - and so many others. Listening to latin music these days is kind of listening to Dixieland and Bluegrass and Rock & Roll. It is listening to "old music".
