Dizzy Gillespie's Dream Band "Manteca"

- Recorded in 1981 at Lincoln Center, captures legendary jazz trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie performing with his Dream Band, consisting of a wide array of jazz music's finest musicians, many of whom worked with Gillespie during the evolutionary era of the early-'40s bebop period. It includes an all-star cast highlighted by pyrotechnic drum wizard Max Roach (Grady Tate on this set), Gillespie's protégé trumpeter Jon Faddis, and Modern Jazz Quartet cofounders John Lewis (piano) and Milt Jackson (vibraphone). The leader's crowd-pleasing persona, trademark puffy cheeks, and no-nonsense trumpet solos steal the show. Selections range from Gillespie's Afro-Cubop favorites "Manteca".

This saxophone section is incredible! Frank Foster, Paquito D'Rivera, Frank Wess, Jimmy Heath and Pepper Adams!!!!!
I thought that was Frank Foster on the end.
Love the way he kicks it going at the start.
pretty sick sax section - Frank Wess, Paquito, Frank Foster, Jimmy Heath, and Pepper Adams. WOWWZERS!!!
This blows my mind every time I hear it!!!
4:26 Jimmy Heath may he rest in peace. Such a short and sweet solo on some rhythm changes.
this had to be my favorite song to play in highschool. i was playin lead in my junior year with 4 trumpets 2 bones 4 saxes and 2 percussion. small group but great times
Same here, but slightly bigger band, fun fun times!
This song looks like it would be really fun to play - even here, the band is having so much fun!
Wow Jon Faddis….RIP
the incomprable Dizzy Gillespie. What a showman!
Candido's solo is incredible! Legend.
Got a chance to see Candido in New York City years back celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Mambo of course recognizing Prez Prado the tune was Concierto para Bongo truly one of the greats no question about it
Másters en toda Dimensión ..Candido excepcional
too much swag in this video
Dizzy Gillespie una delle stelle più luminose del jazz.
The way Dizzy looks at him 2:20 tho lmaoo
When Dizzy looks at a trumpet player like that, he must have done something right :-)
😀 It was good to him!
the great Melba Liston on trombone!
OMG JON FADDIS!
Dizzy's reaction to the stuck valve major 7th is priceless.
I would like to 'like' this a hundred million google times. DIZZY JAZZS MY WORLD!!!!!
Damas y caballeros... El que no sepa que aprenda!
that's still the funk:) ever since the afro cuban jazz fusion with Chano Pozo 1947
Love the Latin beat!
yes sir Dizzy Gillespie cada dia toca mejor
What it must be like to exist on a level of virtuosity where technical issues no longer exist, and music is just a conversation among very, very, very cool friends
Amen to that! Beautifully said
Oh, i thought there was only room for ONE bent trumpet! They're all at it!!!
Dizzy! Still luv iT!❤🎶🎺✨💃🎵
I was at that show. What a night!
Con ese solo de conga, del mostruoso Candido Camero......pa que mas.

The best Congo player ever Cándido
Dizzy's jizzin' all over that stage!!
one word
EPIC
awesome
Dizzy Gillespie has made youtube history in this video, by making it the first not to be disliked. I mean... it's obvious why
I met Grady Tate when I was invited to a jam session by Ray Bryant...in the elevator of our hotel! HA!! Grady is a great guy...have you heard him sing? He's a great vocalist too!!
awesome!
Amazing
Great video! Diz rocks!!
Love it!
A+. You win at life. Kudos.
My recording has him saying clearly "I'll NEVER go back to Georgia:"
Love that one. He recorded it and Night in Tunisia many times.
So?
Groovin percussion section
WOOO!!! Love dizzy and his music
lol the double bass is playing straight up FUNK in the beginning
Candido !
I'm playing this song in my middle school jazz band, I play the bass line on the electric bass.
Sansu Tun No way. We are playing it in jazz band but I play electric guitar
the description on the right is describing the whole concert, which I have on DVD. Max comes out for a feature or two if I remember, including one on just the hi-hat, but Grady is the drummer with the big band throughout.
Recordado a Chano Pozo
Saxes are Frank Foster (1st Tenor), Pacquito D'Rivera (2nd Alto), Frank Wess (Lead Alto), Jimmy Heath (2nd Tenor), and Pepper Adams (Baritone).
I like it!!!!!!!!
Go0od old Dizzy wonderfull
Great!
Sounds much less "cubano" and much more "gringo"--as in Afro-American. Lots of fun!
kudos to the percussion master
Get it, Dizzy 8)
grande grande Dizzy!!!
isto que é música!
The lady is Melba Moore
buenesisisma.........
@MrTheguyofbigbite that is a trumpet, but with an upswept bell. The story behind that is that one night, Dizzy's trumpet fell and wound up that way. Dizzy liked how he was able to hear himself better and kept all his horns that way.
Africa!!!!!!
excellent instrumentation. Thumbs up!!! Loved the trombone solo!
CANDIDO CAMERO ON CONGAS ?????
Grady Tate, drums
Love his Michael Jackson dancing xD
Chano Pozo in memorial tributo
the secret weapon, Mr. Grady Tate.
Here's another version of Manteca from an unreleased concert (with Candido as guest!) that was in danger of being forever lost...until my friend bought the reel on auction and discovered the treasure it held. When I wrote to his daughter, she thanked us for sharing it.

Dizzy makes me dizzy !
Great personarity !
ジャズお好きなんですね!!イイですよね。
and on the congas, that would appear to be Candido Camero
@XBassGroove11X It's Pepper Adams.
Dizzy was so ahead of his time: he knew RUclips would have a 10 min limit!!
@bigmags212 I think you can actually custom order trumpets with the upswept bell. Jon Faddis' horn was the same way.
Candido Camero on conga drums
The drummer is Grady Tate, indeed!
Victor Paz from Panama lead trompet and the legendary master conguero Candido Camero, Paquito D Rivera , all latinos musicians.
Vitin Paz awesome underrated used to see him every night with the doc severinsen orchestra the Tonight show with Johnny Carson skilled trumpet player could blend his horn with either format Jazz or Latin
Curtis Fuller & (I guess) Melba Liston in are in the 'bone section.
larga vida al maestro Candido Camero
@trane1959 u forgot gerry mulligan on bari hahah
Since I found out who the bassist is, I'd like to know who's on piano and guitar. So for the rhythm section thus far, it's George Duvivier (Bass), Grady Tate (Drums), Candido (Congas).
@XBassGroove11X well, he was on the gig, but not in the section.
@bigmags212 I read that he bent the first one in a bus accident!
that's OJ on the second horn, 00:53.
is that paquito d'rivera on alto?
@trane1959 0:13 .. theres gerry
Frank Foster on Sax.....
did they?
Who is the conguero?
Candido Camero?
haha no, it was he always got criticized for not playing his horn level, he always had it down, so he made this to make it so he didn't have to raise his horn.
What did he do to his trumpet? ;-;
I thought it was that he left it on a bar stool and some drunk guy sat on it.
