thank you for the review! the book makes it very clear that idgy and ruth were partners in a loving relationship. the entire town and family just accepted them as a couple and supported them as such. it is a beautiful story.
In the novel, Ninny & Idgie are two separate characters. However, the movie insinuates that Ninny is Idgie. Guess the studios thought it would make a more uplifting ending. In the novel, the town is aware that Ruth & Idgie are lovers. It's basically an open secret. But because it's the early 90s when the movie was released, the studios chose to make Ruth & Idgie platonic friends. However, I think the subtle hints of Idgie's attraction to Ruth was intentionally put in the movie
Yes. This is the exact case with the original film adaptation of *The Color Purple* as well. In the book, it explicitly makes clear that Cicley is a lesbian who is in love with Shug Avery. However, the film loosely alludes to Cicley's sexuality, but overall the film depicts their relationship as a platonic friendship.
I don't understand why the movie insinuates Idgie is Ninny at the end because Ninny is explicitly introduced as the wife of Idgie's brother. Unless Idgie is marrying her brothers (I mean, it is the American south), the movie is clear from the beginning. It's like both the viewers and the directors forgot the beginning of the movie by that last scene.
@@Br0nto5aurus LOL yeah, and on top of that.... Idgie was a lesbian. So besides it making no sense that she'd married her brother Cleo, it makes absolutely no sense that she'd married any man at all and then gotten pregnant/given birth to a special needs son. Ninny and Idgie are clearly sister-in-laws, as Ninny states at the beginning. It also makes no sense whatsoever to think that in the short amount of time between when Ninny left the nursing home and Evelyn finds her, that Ninny somehow found a beehive and collected some honey before realizing that her house was gone 😅 I never understood how some people think they are the same person. I always took the ending of the movie as just a revelation to Evelyn that Idgie was still alive and well, and still charming bees.
Fun fact the instructor of the feminine class that Evelyn attends is Fannie Flagg, the author of fried green tomatoes at the whistle stop Cafe, and her friend that whispers divorce in her ear during one of these sessions is Constance Shulman the voice of Patty Mayonnaise in Doug
Mary Stewart Masterson really did the Bee scene, her stunt double quit so she did it 🐝 going to recommend 1989 Steel Magnolias...the cast is amazing and fabulous
Can't say anything without spoiling. Watch it when you are in the right mindset for some tears and laughter. It is based on a real family, written originally as a play by a brother of the main character. If you do watch it, I recommend looking up the true story before (if you don't mind spoilers) or after. @@saphire875
Really?? Adding it to the list of American stuff to show my hubs who’s never lived here I love fried green tomatoes anyway… I actually grow tomato plants for the sole purpose of making my own
@ Yes! The little town portrayed in the film is actually just a street, the teeny little Main Street of Juliette, Georgia. They have friend green tomatoes at the cafe and all the little houses are antiques shops and gift shops.
I love that Ruth used a passage from the book of Ruth to call Idgie to her. Ruth is considered "the lesbian book" by some Bible scholars, as Ruth and Naomi's relationship is obviously deeper than just a friendship. Same with David and Johnathan's relationship in Samuel 1 and 2.
I love this movie so much. I love that you all not only picked up on the Ruth and Idgie subtext (which is practically text, really), but also immediately guessed that they barbequed Frank Bennett long before it was revealed. Well done. Such a great movie.
fun fact: The films director was frustrated that the studio execs weren't on board with allowing Ruth and Idgie to be explicitly gay like they are in the book, so his personal homage/alternative to a sex scene was the food fight in the kitchen.
You should absolutely read the book! There is more to the story than they could have fit into a film, and you learn so much more about the side characters. It's a wonderful book!
To me, the movie screen play kind of made it seems like they are the same person, and it was obviously done that way on purpose. So to me in that regard, it doesn't really follow the book. Maybe they thought heavily implying that would make the movie more interesting and better received. May be the author got a bunch of suggestions that that would make the story better. Who knows.
This is the first of your videos that I have watched. I frequently look for reactions to this movie, so your video showed up in my recommendations. I don’t think I’ve clicked as quickly on a video ever! I enjoyed your reaction so much! The first time I saw this movie was in the theater with my mom. I was 16 or 17 years old. It is part of my trifecta, which also includes Steel Magnolias and A League of Their Own. They were all released within a few years of each other and hold a special place in my heart.
In the midst of a crazy climate, Petty Pumpkins brought us a touching and fun reaction to one of the most beautiful films of friendship and love, and feminism, and standing up for your friend and neighbor... I stopped everything to watch this and had a reprieve from everything going on in the world. It's been years since I watched this film I love so much, and y'all brought back all the feels. When my mom passed on, as I consoled my nieces, the only thing I could of to say to them was "Your grandmother was a lady, and a lady always knew when it was time to leave." Thank you Wes and Chey for bringing us into this reaction with you ❤❤❤🍅🍅🍅
Guys - by far one of the best reactions to this movie. I’m so glad it can still impact today’s LGBT community the way it did for me when it came out. ❤ 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️
OMGOODNESS... a straight banger. Much needed distraction from this exhausting and chaotic election cycle. Every time I hear the song, *What Becomes of the Brokenhearted* this movie comes to mind; Paul Young's version of the song was the soundtrack for the trailer, so it's imprinted on my childhood memory. Most importantly, Idgie Threadgoode is often an overlooked queer icon. 💅 ❤ Thanks ❤
Absolutely read the book. Theres also a sequel to it called “The Wonder Boy of Whistle-Stop.” which is also good. They actually made that restaurant into a real restaurant. It’s still there in Juliette, Georgia. And absolutely YES Ruth and Idgie were a couple. It’s hinted at here but it was crystal clear in the novel.
I finish the second book a few months ago and love it that one. Its story about an older Buddy and his family. Ninny and Idgie are to different people. Ninny married Idgie's brother Cleo, but the only time you see him is at the beginning teasing Idgie about wearing a dress.
It's still there? I went there waaay back in the 90's. I thought for sure it would be gone by now. There was another store in the street where I got a cheerycoke - made from cherry and coke; the real thing. The tomaotes were delicious as was the cherrycoke.
NO WAY I LOVE THIS MOVIE! would never have expected the reaction but I love it. The book is quite different from the movie, as it goes into a lot of side characters backstories. Also Idgie and Ruth's relationship is way more obvious than how it was hinted in the movie. And fun fact, in the book they are basically unlabeled wives, even other people in the town call Stump "THEIR kid", also Idgie's family calls Ruth Idgie's crush when they first meet.
Read this book, it is different enough from the movie but has so much in common it makes both more enjoyable. It is so much fun. Love you boys for watching this
Yay!!! Now a STEEL MAGNOLIAS reaction is definitely in order! Nothing cuter than Dolly Parton, Julia Roberts, and Sally Field being sparky, sassy, southern women ♥
Also , yall should check out Dolores Claiborne / 1995 - Stephen kings favorite film adaptation. He wrote the novel with Kathy bates in mind after seeing her in misery. She’s joined with Jennifer Jason Leigh , they’re both masterclass acting performances with the incomparable Judy Parfitt in a supporting role. It’s a mature, dark, and superb drama. Arguably Bates best role and certainly one of my favorites. The cinematography, the score is by Danny Elfman, and the entire tone is well shot. You won’t regret it. I love watching it near thanksgiving. ❤❤❤
My favorite scene is the food fight. 😅😅😅😅😂😂😂😂 Also the author Fannie Flagg made a cameo in this movie in the first ladies group teaching them how to bring the spark back into their marriages
Fannie Flagg also plays the School Nurse in GREASE. She was a regular on the 1970s show Laugh In. Cicely Tyson is best known for her Oscar nominated performance in SOUNDER.
Imogene "Idgie" Threadgoode is not Ninny Threadgoode, the Jessica Tandy character. Ninny is Idgie's sister-in-law, she was married to Idgie's older brother, Cleo (he was the one Idgie jumped at the bottom of the stairs during the wedding prep scene at the beginning of the movie).
@gibsongirl2100. If the movie wanted viewers to think that Ninny is Idgie then why did Ninny introduce herself to Evelyn by saying that she (Ninny) married Idgie’s brother Cleo? Why did Ninny tell Evelyn that she was practically adopted by the Threadgoode family. It’s made perfectly clear to those that pay attention & can remember that Ninny isn’t Idgie.
Absolutely correct... the implication at the end is that Idgie is still alive and out in the woods somewhere. People get confused... and read the wrong thing into it. Mainly because they didn't pay full attention. The movie clearly states in the beginning that Ninny married one of Idgie's brothers. (And practically grew up in the Threadgoode household.) And Ninny talked about her son, Albert. The real Idgie had no children except Ruth's son, Buddy.
Jessica Tandy was amazing in every part she played. I knew you guys would be dehydrated after this one, the tears were flying. You guys are fun together, a good match.😁 Who doesn’t love Big George? Fun Fact; Kathy Bates’ husband was in almost every Ernest movie.
Awesome reaction, I'm crying along with you. There are a lot of people recommending Steel Magnolias, but may I suggest The Color Purple? A lot of the same themes, fabulous acting, great locations, and just as emotional, in my humble opinion.
Yes, you do need to read this book. And when you're done with it, get the sequel, "The Wonder Boy of Whistle Stop." It will help even more to tell the story of the lovely women. And, if you can, plan a trip to Juliette, Georgia where this movie was filmed in most part. They have left the buildings and you can have lunch at the Whistle Stop Cafe, including fried green tomatoes. This was a wonderful reaction - thank you!
Ninny is Idgie's sister-in-law, she mentions in the beginning of the film she married one of Idgie's brothers. The movie tries to hint that Ninny might be Idgie but in the novel they are separate people.
Yep. At the very start, it's made clear that she's married to one of Idgie's brothers, Cleo Threadgoode, but it's kind of forgotten and ignored after that, leading to many people assuming that she is Idgie herself, but she's not.
Hey guys! Saw u were watching FRIED GREEN TOMATOES & just had to watch your reaction. I love love love this movie.I saw it when it was released in theaters. I also really enjoyed the book. U should read it.I think u might enjoy it. The book doesn't just hint at the fact that Idgie & Ruth were in "lesbians" which was a slight frustration for me w/the movie. Guess, I have to take into consideration the time the movie was released. The book also goes more into Sipsy & Big George's family. I know that the movie was suggesting that Ninny & Idgie might be one & the same, but if u read the book, then you'd know they are not. Ninny is actually Idgie's sister-in-law. The book's author Fanny Flagg had a cameo in the movie. She was the red headed speaker at Evelyn's 1st relationship class.😊 I really enjoyed your reaction. See u on the next.😊👍
6:12, right before this Buddy says hi to Ninny we just don’t see her face (she admits she had a crush on him). Also 23:15, the first guy you see when Idgie enters the room - that’s her brother Cleo who Ninny married
I watched this with my mom in the theater when it came out years ago, wept profusely. I hesitated watching your reaction, but just because I know my eyes will be puffy tomorrow.
I saw this movie in the theater when I was like 12. It was kind of strangely huge among my 7th grade friends and I. Love seeing reactions to it, and love that you all found it as wonderful as I did!
For anyone interested, Fannie Flagg wrote a sequel a couple of years ago called "Wonderboy of Whistlestop". In my estimation, it didn't really hold up, but still a fun read!
Ninny is not Idgie. The look at the end is revealing that Idgie is still alive and living out in the wilds somewhere. People misread what the cues are telling. Ninny says early on that she married one of Idgie's brothers. After practically growing up in the Threadgoode household. And had a disabled son named Albert. Idgie only ever had Buddy with Ruth.
One of my all time favorite movies. I saw it in theaters and rented it endlessly on VHS when it came out cause that's how old I am. 😂 I am beginning a petition for Steel Magnolias next. 🤞🏻
I've loved (and quoted) this movie for most of my LIFE. The book is fantastic and gives so much more detail. I cried multiple times lol Fannie Flagg also wrote Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man which is hilarious and i love it, too.
The enjoyment I got from y’all reacting to this movie…. ❤ One of my favorites and I loved seeing someone else fall in love with it too!! Highly recommend the book too.
I almost missed this reaction, since I'd just watched this movie less than a month ago... but quickly KNEW I needed to watch it again with my favorite Petty Pumpkins!!!!! Sooooo glad I did! Love you two. ❤❤ Ed sucks at life!!!!!! Definitely read the book... it's great.
Def read the book. In fact, all of Fannie Flagg's books are so good. Wholesome and Southern but full of sharp wit and surprising twists. All the characters are so colorful, with equally colorful old fashioned names.
This is a major underrated film in my opinion. I grew up watching this, steel magnolias and league of their own, but most people don’t know about this one. Definitely a comfort film of mine.
The author, Fannie Flagg, is actually in this movie. The first "class" scene that Evelyn attends has Fannie Flagg as the instructor writing on the whiteboard. She also appeared in the films Five Easy Pieces with Jack Nicholson, Grease, and many television show guest appearances. She has written several novels (in addition to "Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe." She is 80 years old now. 🙂
Man, what did the 90s have against Mary Louise Parker? She was the poster girl for dying young and sick while her lesbian lover/best friend mourned her. Now you need to watch Boys on the Side.
I was born in the mid 80s and my parents split when I was 4 or 5 and we moved in with my grandma. She stayed with us and helped raise us. I always liked Jessica Tandy (Ninny) in all those 80a and 90s movies cuz she reminded me of her. We lost my grandma a few years ago and it’s so weird seeing these movies and missing her instead of seeing them with her.
You guys gave one of the best reviews I’ve seen in a long time. I want emotions I want laughing. I want crying. I love you guys so much. You just earned a subscriber in me.
7:57 I've watched this movie so many times, I could probably quote it word for word. I'm 50 years old so I remember when it was released. My bff and I saw it at a drive-in theater. And we literally screamed and cried when Buddy died. THEN at the end when Ruth dies, I was grateful to be in a car because I was inconsolable 💔😭 One of the few movies that still makes me cry even though I've seen it dozens of times. And yes, the book is worth it.
My mom and her sister just went to these locations in Georgia over the summer. They've talked about visiting the locations for a while and they finally did it.
This is one of my favorite films. I’ve seen it a hundred times and still cry every time. Heck, I cried watching you guys watch it 🥹 I watched it with my mother years ago and she loved it and it is a movie that reminds me of her. She just passed in September 😞 The first time I watched it years ago, I was Ruth. Now, I’m Evelyn, on my way to being Ninny. It’s a lifelong film for me. 💖 I’m so glad you watched, posted and most of all, enjoyed this film. It is an absolute classic 💖

She was the red headed speaker at Evelyn's 1st relationship class.😊
I really enjoyed your reaction. See u on the next.😊👍
Another beautiful movie is Driving Miss Daisy... how this one makes us laugh and cry at the same time.
He’s on the grill baby. The secret is in the sauce baby. 💚 🍅
YES the book is even more amazing
This was unexpected, but BADLY needed this weekend! Thank you for letting us go on the journey with you.
6:12, right before this Buddy says hi to Ninny we just don’t see her face (she admits she had a crush on him).
Also 23:15, the first guy you see when Idgie enters the room - that’s her brother Cleo who Ninny married
Soo happy you guys are watching this movie !!😊~
I watched this with my mom in the theater when it came out years ago, wept profusely. I hesitated watching your reaction, but just because I know my eyes will be puffy tomorrow.
I saw this movie in the theater when I was like 12. It was kind of strangely huge among my 7th grade friends and I. Love seeing reactions to it, and love that you all found it as wonderful as I did!
For anyone interested, Fannie Flagg wrote a sequel a couple of years ago called "Wonderboy of Whistlestop". In my estimation, it didn't really hold up, but still a fun read!
Omggg, one of my absolute favorite book adaptations… so in love with you guys reactions 😂❤
If I ever need a good cry, this movie, Steel Magnolias, and Beaches are my go to. Beautiful stories of strong women and friendship.
One of my favorite movies! The story, the soundtrack, the superb acting! Such a good movie!
Idgie only ever had Buddy with Ruth.
was just thinking about rewatching this….crying already 😭
When Idgy tells Ruth the story of the ducks and her voice breaks... "can you imagine?" It always breaks my heart…💔
No, you're not imagining it. The book this movie is based on is a lesbian love story. It's a great book. Very gay, very iconic.
One of my all time favorite movies. I saw it in theaters and rented it endlessly on VHS when it came out cause that's how old I am. 😂 I am beginning a petition for Steel Magnolias next. 🤞🏻
Omg yall. This is perfect.
Yes, it is an amazing book! So worth reading I can’t even put it into words 🙏
I force everyone to watch this.
I've loved (and quoted) this movie for most of my LIFE. The book is fantastic and gives so much more detail. I cried multiple times lol Fannie Flagg also wrote Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man which is hilarious and i love it, too.
Another reaction where I cry my eyes out 😭🤧
Great timing. I just finished reading the sequel to this novel when this went up
that food fight scene between Idgie & Ruth was the closest thing to a lesbian love scene the filmmakers were allowed to do
Lord, this movie always takes my emotions on a roll coaster😭
The enjoyment I got from y’all reacting to this movie…. ❤
One of my favorites and I loved seeing someone else fall in love with it too!! Highly recommend the book too.
You guys will love the book, so much more in it and the recipes are to die for.
I almost missed this reaction, since I'd just watched this movie less than a month ago... but quickly KNEW I needed to watch it again with my favorite Petty Pumpkins!!!!! Sooooo glad I did! Love you two. ❤❤
Ed sucks at life!!!!!!
One of the greatest films of all time! Love you both so much and what a beautiful reaction! 💙💙
Man, what did the 90s have against Mary Louise Parker? She was the poster girl for dying young and sick while her lesbian lover/best friend mourned her. Now you need to watch Boys on the Side.
i second this
Exactly what I just said too! Boys on the Side is fabulous, and also makes me cry my face off.
I absolutely loved watching your laughter through tears.
I didn't expect this! Thanks for choosing this film, it's one of my favourites for sure
You guys gave one of the best reviews I’ve seen in a long time. I want emotions I want laughing. I want crying. I love you guys so much. You just earned a subscriber in me.
Cannot watch this movie without bawling 🤧 Every single time!! ❤
I knew yall wasn’t gonna be able to handle it. Haha. Such a fantastic film.
My mom and her sister just went to these locations in Georgia over the summer. They've talked about visiting the locations for a while and they finally did it.
For more classic, beautiful and heartbreaking movies....
The Color Purple
Beaches
Steel Magnolias
If you think this early 90s movie punched you in the feels, Jessica Tandy has so many classics. Batteries Not Included, Cocoon, Driving Mrs. Daisy...
I used to watch this all the time as a kid lol. Love this movie I haven’t read the book but seems by the comments that I should definitely find it!😊
So happy you guys are doing this movie! I'm a big fan!
100% agree about you guys seeing 1989 Steel Magnolias - - Buy extra Kleenex!
oh, read this book, but be prepared... I cried A LOT reading it!
