No it's not to do with broken english, it's to fit the rhythm of the song. Each line has so many notes and a certain stress pattern, so you have to paraphrase the english lyrics to make them fit.
It honestly triggers me it not being the actual English lyrics :T

My comment's probably gonna get buried, but I was recently in the hospital awaiting a liver transplant. I'd been in and out of like 3 different hospitals over 3 months trying to get help, it was an awful mess. But the week that I had my transplant I heard something say to me in a dream that it would happen "In three days" from the day I heard it. Well, that third day came and I got the news that they found a donor and that they were flying states away to get it. I picked up my laptop and immediately played this with my headphones. Played it so many times. It still brings me to tears to think that the day had finally come. Like I said, this'll probably get buried but I just wanted to say how much your music helped me stay in high spirits in the hospital and that I'm recovering well. Thanks Jon.

I love how the lyrics go from “biting my nails at emergency exits” to “sharpening claws at emergency exits.” Claws and nails are basically the same, but it shows how Deku went from being afraid and looking for any way out by fantasizing about hero’s, to actively persuing power and his dreams as a means of lifting himself from a not-so-good place.

I've not actually seen MHA but I love this song so maybe my opinion is a little misguided, but I think the comparison of those two lines means that the one biting his nails (Deku presumably) has unwittingly put himself into the path of a villain waiting to pounce.
Skippy the Walrus as discussed earlier in this discussion, the change from biting his nails to sharpening his claws reflects the growth of deku into a confident individual who is actively following his dreams. This marks a massive change to the meek and quirkless individual he started as.

I appreciate his commitment to making sure the actual melody of the song is preserved as well as the meaning of the lyrics. Most covers I see have a tendency to. . . It's not that their translations are bad. It's more that the feel of the song is altered, or that in choosing the actual direct translation of the lyrics, some of the emotion is lost, and the emphasis often falls on the wrong syllable to carry the tune from the original. This isn't specifically a problem, but it does occasionally cause the song to feel sorta. . . Bloated. Weighed down. Jonathan usually manages to avoid this by using adapted translations that allow for the correct cadence, while avoiding loss of the meaning and emotion. It must be very difficult but I appreciate the effort.

I love both of their covers so much. Most english covers just take a direct translation and put it to music but they take the translations and put them into words that make sense.
