I second this -- You aren't losing anything. You are gaining everything. I am three+ years sober now and I know you can be, too. Being around alcohol gets easier the longer you stay away from it. Believe it or not, there may even come a day where you can't imagine ever having a drink again, nor understand why others would. It's not a judgmental thing, but your values can change so much that the thought of having a pint seems as bizarre as punching yourself in the face. Keep up the good work. Every day sober is another 24 hours of investment in yourself, and those numbers start to add up quickly.

One thing that stands out to me about quitting the booze is, you don't feel like chit the next day. There is never going to be a day you feel bad, that to me is what has the biggest impact on my life drinking and yes I am still drinking, nearly every night and need to cut it out. The cleverest thing I ever saw about drinking was that it's "borrowing happiness from tomorrow". You can enjoy yourself for 4 hours the night before but you're feeling like chit the next day for about 10 or 12 hours after finally getting out of bed, I don't want to get out of bed most mornings and end up having 9 or 10 hours sleep on "bad" days. Like there's ever a good day after drinking the night before.

OK, Gareth, As I've said before, I used to be a heavy social drinker, in a week I'd down 120 pints of premium lager, I'm not joking, that is a daily average of 17 pints. In 2003, I had started a new job, I was 46 at the time and my new employer sent me for medical examination. The results were astounding to say the least, my blood pressure was 210 / 114, dangerously high. A blood test showed that my liver function had reduced by three quarters of it's normal function, my liver was suffering badly. My doctor told me that if I didn't change my drinking lifestyle, I wouldn't see 50.
I stopped drinking alcohol for the whole of 2004, I still went to my local pub to meet my friends but I drank bottles of Britvic J2O. Years later the pub landlady said she'd made a lot of money in J2O sales when I'd given up drinking. These days I have the occassional alcoholic drink, I'm coming up to my 68th birthday.
I managed to do it, so I'm sure you can, Gareth.

Was also gonna say. Now you can truly RELAX on holiday.
Drinking booze ain’t relaxing, we think it is lol. But it’s actually making your blood pressure go up, it’s killing your dopamine stores, promotes bad sleep and shite eating. And brings on anxiety, and just in general not being present on the holiday and around family.
Now you can truly relax. And remember, relaxing can be a-bit boring, life can be a-bit boring. Boring is GOOD 👍🏻

I say this with respect. Gaz, most people who think they've got it cracked relapse very quickly. Also, once you stop drinking, it opens your eyes to how many places, events, occasions, etc, that alcohol is used and easily accessible and available. One day at a time, mate 👍

    • @tilerman
      @tilerman Месяц назад +17

Completely agree with you. I've been surrounded by people that drink my whole life, when very young i knew my dad was a big drinker, as were my uncles, all there mates, indeed some of my aunties as well. Just seemed natural that when i was old enough, 14, that i started, as did my mates, my brothers, everyone. Now nearly 60 i've lost my dad, my uncles and friends to booze and a general bad lifestyle. And as you pointed out, so many events all revolve around alcohol, and it's so readily available, i can get it from 3 shops literally a 30 second walk from my front door and thats the reason i've found it so hard to stop myself. I've tried but always cave in. It is hard. Sorry to go on.

All my "friends" used to treat me like I was the weird one of the group because I wouldn't drink, sitting there among them all with a pint of Coke, while they got drunk around me. Only after a lot of peer pressure did I return to drinking, but after that I NEVER went to the point where I lost control again. The point? - it doesn't matter what others do, it matters what value you put on your own life, your own happiness, and popular opinion be damned!!

My plan was to give up chocolate, sugar, cake, cookies, sodas, puddings, and everything else with synthetic sugar. It’s been tough at times but I’m keeping on. I’ve got fatty liver disease - I’ve got to have another blood test in a weeks time and I hope it’s working.

That's good advice. A lot of blokes (if they know you quit) will use it as banter and mock you for not drinking, whereas if you keep quiet about it and just say something like your doctor told you not to drink because of pills you're on, they won't have any ammo at that point.

So true. If addiction started from self medicating, which it usually does, then sobriety is just like someone taking away your medication and expecting you to just cope with living the way you were escaping from. More important work to be done than just removing the substance.

I think alcohol advertising will be banned eventually because people are becoming aware of the dangers. It is also a trigger for people on the wagon. If you have an addictive nature it’s easy to want that thing that makes life seem better and more seemingly more fun. Unfortunately we all know there is a big price to pay. Stay strong and enjoy some amazing foods . I think everyone is willing you to succeed.

The point being - I knew they were there but I'm not drinking them. You can go to pubs and just get a Coke or something - it's actually more fun when you're sober.
Stick with it man - I have faith in you!

Yeah chilling out on a sunny morning on holiday in a bar. It does sound tempting! I'm up to day 30! Had a tough weekend myself. On Saturday I went to see my mate on his river boat, and usually we tootle around the river for a bit then sink a few beers but this time I stayed dry. Felt a bit weird but got through it and it was actually OK. Then on Sunday it was England in the European championship final!! I was a bit relieved we lost in the end! 😅

Still sober, 8 years now, grace of God. You will always thank yourself tomorrow for not getting drunk today. Most cravings however intense only last five minutesor so, so if you can fight out five minutes at a time you can make it through a night. It gets easier over time, at least it did for me. I was at a wedding a few weeks ago, the drink was flowing all around me and I was so thankful that i was sober. I wouldn't have been able to do that in the first couple years. I believe in you, i believe that you can do this. I believe that you are starting on a journey that will change your life. Keep at it my friend, follow the footsteps of so many who are now free.
