Why Doctor Who NEEDS The 15th Doctor

- We've officially entered the 15th Doctor era of Doctor Who, with Series 14/Season 1 due to air in May this year. I've been pretty critical of the recent episodes of the show, but it's time for some positivity as I explore exactly why the 15th Doctor is so important for Doctor Who right now.

I know Ruby after 1 episode better than I know Yaz after 31. It beggars belief.
100%
Absolutely. Chibs seemed to believe that having an actor say "I want more" was sufficient to establish their character's personality, whereas RTD and Moffat instinctively understood that it takes a whole lot more effort to build a character.
Great take. For example I highly doubt we would have known Yaz has feelings for the Doctor if it wasn't addressed verbally.
I guess, RTD is just better at conveying emotion than Chibnall is. Though I'm just looking at series three and saw 42, which was written by Chibnall. That's a confined space rather than "too many ideas" which a lot of people criticize his era of the show for - but even though they are guest characters that you don't expect to meet again, Chibnall actually did a reasonable job in that one of establishing feelings about at least two or three of those guest characters just for that one episode.
Then you don't pay attention to people.
I hadn’t thought about how the 13th doctor and her companions never had fun. They really did argue the whole time.
The 15th Doctor reminds me a lot of the overall vibe of McGann's original Eighth Doctor in the TV Movie: Sensitive, idealistic, and adventurous, making a clean break from the trauma and darkness of the previous incarnations. For Eight, that was a break from the pomposity and abrasiveness of Colin Baker's Six, and darkness and manipulations of McCoy's Seven. There's a lightness and whimsey that we hadn't really seen since Tom Baker's Four.
The Time War was a great way for RTD for the reboot of NuWho but I agree that it was time for the show to let go of the long-suffering Doctor dealing with that trauma. Moffat could have done that after Day of the Doctor, but I can see how this narrative wasn't quite enough to resolve the Doctor's trauma from the Time War. Nevertheless, it was high time for the Doctor to finally start healing from that trauma. It really is a throwback to the sort of pre-Time War Doctor.
Yep. I love the PTSD Doctors of NuWho, but they built too much of a mythology around the character, like he had to be the personification of everything that's good and right in the universe.
The show felt like it would one day crumble under the wait of so much pressure on the main character without any sort of release.
Please let the doctor just be a guy (or a gal... Or a person), a super ancient and alien guy, but a guy nonetheless 😂
Moffat had built the Doctor up as some kind of superhero or demigod. I thought the idea with doctor 13 was meant to be to go back to smaller stakes, but that didn't really hold after her first series. And for whatever reason, Chibnall's era didn't hold the attention of a lot of fans (speaking from personal experience here - I managed to not bother looking at some of 13s episodes till months after they first aired - RTD's return has got me excited again and looking forward to seeing new episodes)
True. Plus the 15th literally says that he exists cuz 14 was able to heal.
Non sensible to me.
Nobody heals from the trauma the doctor went through.
Ncuti Gatwa had more energy in one scene than an entire Chibnall series
Shame it was fruity energy. Will need to see what his actings like for serious moments first b4 can say if hes aight
@@sonmarsha69 what about 9 kissing Jack and 11 kissing Rory
I really hope that Russell doesn’t lean too far into the silliness of the show so that Ncuti doesn’t have his moments of gravitas. Like 11’s Akhaten speech and 12’s breaking the wall?
Given that Gatwa is such a versatile actor, I don't think RTD will fall into that trap. He's a very clever writer, and he knows how to get the best out of the actors he employs.
@@ftumschk I mean I’ve only seen him in Barbie and Sex education both of which have him playing more flamboyant, happy go lucky sunshine kinda characters. I’ve never really seen him portray anger in a significant way
@@emperorholocron8278 ncuti has such depth in sex education, such as the episode where eric blows up at adam for constant queerphobic behaviour, gave me chills.
@@emperorholocron8278 I was pretty convinced by his "Will someone tell me what the HELL is going on?" in _The Giggle._
I think the modern era of the Doctor every incarnation the Doctor had a bit of an inversion of their main character trait. I think it will be necessary to develop Ncuti in that direction.
I really really enjoyed Ncuti's first episode. I'm baffled by the number of people who are saying, "oh well he doesn't feel like the doctor at all. He's got a totally different personality." Yeah duh. That's kinda the whole point of regeneration. He's got what counts, he's still got his desire to help and his adventurous spirit. He still finds great wonder in the universe and in the things he doesn't understand. That's what makes the doctor feel like the doctor. Of course his personality is different, just like it is with every regeneration. I heard someone even complain that "OH well he doesn't look or sound like the doctor, his accent slips." Capaldi was Scottish and the doctor isn't MEANT to look like his previous regenerations. Again, literally the point of the regeneration.
I think Ncuti will do wonderfully, and I'm already liking his character. It DOES feel very different. But it still feels like the doctor. We are seeing a refreshing new side of him that fully embraces the nature of regeneration. I'm excited to see where they go with him.
a few lower-stakes adventures would be welcome - it doesn't always have to be the end of the universe (again!)
Would be interesting to me if the 15th Doctor didn’t go dark and stayed lighthearted. An instead of losing his main companions they would leave on their own terms and don’t die like most classic companions.
Can’t wait to see Harbo’s Ruby Sunday cosplay :)
I don't think the internet is ready for that yet
@@HarboWholmes
Dew it.
@@HarboWholmes😏😏
15 reminds me alot of Five when it comes to his human nature as well as the comedic nature of 2
Ruby Sunday responding to the Doctor's chiding remarks about jumping on a floating ladder by screaming "THEY HAVE THE BABY!" immediately characterized her for me. This is a girl who will jump headfirst into a completely absurd situation with no hesitation to save her foster sister, risking her own life in the process.
The hype is real and justified in a way it hasn't felt like since Day of The Doctor. I loved a lot of what came in between, but the excitement level wasn't the same. I knew Capaldi was gonna dazzle me so it became expected. Now that we've all survived ChibnallWHO it's just so great to look forward to Doctor WHO again.
And I don't think it is fair to say Yaz hated the Doctor, I never picked that up at all, that's my only notes.
Looking foward? 😂 its looking worrying to be honest. Woke brigade out in full force... no thanks
@@sonmarsha69 Well you're welcome to watch other things if it isn't for you, no one is forcing anything on you. Most people don't give a crap if something is "woke" or not. I'm extremely happy about the change. I did feel the trauma war hero story was dragging a bit past The day of the Doctor and towards the end of Capaldi's series. It was a very exciting new dark way to reboot the series in the 2000s and was very well done. But i'm not sure how many more series couldve really been made with that vibe. I view the fun and silliness as crucial to the entire franchise. This is a wonderful way to bring back old fans who left, try something new and get fans excited again.
Never even realized that unlike Clara n Danny n Amy n Rory and even River, we don’t see Rose n Martha n Mickey n Donna as actual children, so that was a cool point at 5:20
I really enjoyed Doctor 15 and Ruby. The life and excitement in his eyes is so refreshing! So energetic and fresh!
Ruby isnt different herself yet, but she was well written so far. I am enjoying what is there. Rewatching the specials over and over lol
As Harbo has said himself, he doesn't want Doctor Who to fail, but to ensure this great show can inspire the next generation of fans without the previous generation forcing heavy continuity on them we need this almost clean slate and back-to-basics period for at least the next series to draw them in, much like how you can pick up Classic Who from nearly any story of the twenty six seasons and TV film without necessarily starting from An Unearthly Child, or like how you can pick up a comic book or a video game to a popular character without too many references to the long running franchise, or pick up a recent album to a music artist without feeling the need to listen to their previous works beforehand. I could go on but hopefully I've made my point that this new jump-on point needs to be as fresh and likeable as possible to work.
@kensukadventures628 I would suggest that the big history alteration already happened when Chris Chibnall did the whole "Timeless Child" thing a few years back. If RTD reboots so that that is acknowleged, but not really talked about much we do kind of go back to a situation where people can just get on board with the new adventure, Doctor is a benevolent alien, with a box that can travel anywhere in time and space.
12/Capaldi had that same clean slate potential to be free of that baggage too. He had just saved Gallifrey and the Time Lords, realized he'd never killed them all to begin with, and (at the time) had just gotten a new set of fresh regenerations. Then, they had to go and make him angry and withdrawn instead or relieved and revitalized.
True. He seemed to be more miserable in his first series than 10 or 11 were in his last couple.
Playing devils advocate. Having the twelfth Doctor be miserable and withdrawn after nine hundred years on Trenzalore, a lot of time ot ruminate about their past, their actions on Trenzalore and in the past, questioning if he was a good person was something I enjoyed. To me his era felt like an epilogue of sorts to the Time War storyline. I expected Thirteen's and Chibnall's era would be a true fresh start for the character with Gallifrey back, no more time war, just a mad woman with a box travelling the universe but welp Gallifrey got deaded again.
But they didn't heal his mind... Capaldi had fun, in fact he is the Rickest Doctor of them all, he's been their and seen that and has told his countless droves of companions to ''Not touch that!'' and what do they do? Yeah no wonder he got tired and apathetic after it all and became a lecturer at a University while trying to rehabilitate his true only friend, he is the Doctor at the other end of the looking glass. 15th Doctor is the Doctor after his own rehabilitation, fresh and wiser accepting his past decisions and moving on :P
12 also still carried a LOT of shell shock/trauma from the Time War, regardless of the events from DOTD. Just listen to his speech in " The Zygon Inversion". Just because he potentially had a clean slate doesn't mean he had one.
I'm a big fan of RTD's writing following his departure from Dr Who in 2010, Years & Years for example is sublime. I was really hoping for something similar for the RTD2 era and whilst I genuinely enjoyed Wild Blue Yonder, the rest of what I've seen so far has left me oddly empty and longing for those Blu-ray collection sets of the classic series. No issues with the 15th Doctor or his new companion - there's real potential there but the recent Xmas special for me was the worse thing RTD has written for certainly since 2010 (and he has rarely put a foot wrong). Granted, I'm old enough to actually remember watching Jon Pertwee's era live on TV way, way back so perhaps I'm not the target audience for this 'reboot'. I probably wasn't the target audience for the 2005 reboot yet I thought that was brilliant on so many levels. Rose wasn't a fantastic episode compared to what followed but I felt it worked a lot better than The Church on Ruby Road which just seemed to fall flat in terms of story. There was very little there to pull me in with most of the 'action' seemingly taking place inside Ruby's flat, a daft goblin 'threat' and not much else. Matters weren't helped by having Anita Dobson talking into the camera during quick break in the end credits to try and spice up her 'mystery'. I really hope that RTD has better stuff coming up because of this all fails, the show won't last beyond season 2 on Disney +. Anyway, just my thoughts and I enjoy your channel immensely :)
TBH I loved the companion-doctor chemistry that they have. I remember watching and saying to myself " i like them" and then immediately thinking "wow, I haven't said that about a character in some time so these guys might actually be good"
My dad, who has been watching since Season 13/14, has apparently watched The Church On Ruby Road over thirty times already and seems more excited for Series 14 than he did for any of Capaldi’s or Jodie’s series or even the 60th! It’s genuinely so nice to see him excited again and they’re clearly doing something right.
I don't feel that this is a true fresh start. I mean a fresh start would able going into this new series without any foreknowledge.
But going ahead, audiences would still need to know about The Timeless Child, The Toymaker's Meddling and all of the foreshadowing that has been enacted so far from The 60th Specials.
I think that's my biggest complaint about this new RTD, I love Ncuti and I love Millie BUT the Foreshadowing of Series Arcs are painfully obvious this time around.
Back in the day, Bad Wolf, Torchwood, Harold Saxon, The Bees are Disappearing. All of those Arcs were subtle. But now they've foreshadowed almost too much for me anyways. The Toymaker's Leigons, The Master, The One Who Waits and the lingering presence of The Timeless Child arc. All pushed up front and centre It all feels very Marvel-like foreshadowing. At least while Moffatt kept reminding us of the Series Arc, at least he was doing one per series.
I don't mean to complain because I'm really looking forward to the New Series but I just hope that all that foreshadowing was for The Specials benefit and now we'll just be going on adventures.
I think a bit part of that is likely the shortened season. 13 episodes plus one Christmas special gave a lot more room to subtly building things up. Maybe there were one or two episodes outside the finale that vaguely dealt with the arc, but throughout the other 8 or 9 episodes it was only alluded to.
With only 8 episodes for these new series, there’s less time to do that subtle form of world building for the arc without it feeling like it appears out of nowhere (Which I think was a big problem the Chibnall era had, particularly for s12).
Not saying it can’t be done, and I’m sure RTD will do it, but It’s probably more effective to do the marvel style name-drops to build up the arc of the season. Although I doubt there won’t be that subtle background build-up that was everywhere in RTD 1
I kind of feel like Disney wanted to force the "reboot" by starting from season 1 but RTD was maybe against it so he wrote the specials in such a way that it blends together and you can't really ignore the previous era.
Ruby is a good companion, a very modern regular girl with good character development so far. 15 I’m excited for, because I love dr who and I love ncuti, but as a fan who has grown older with the show, I prefer the darker, angst-ier, side of the doctors now. 12 going through grief is one of the best things they’ve done imo. I hope they have fun and happy adventures as they always do, but also draw on the trauma and unanswered questions that plague the doctor still.
I would love to see the story telling going forward also distancing itself from the previous RTD era. I think a good way to do this is to make the Doctor less lonely. Bring Back his Granddaughter, Jenny, even River. These 3 could all just be recast as new regenerations and their relationship to the Doctor can be explained in a simple "I'm his_____." If they are exploring the idea of the doctor being the timeless child the doctors literal family would be some of the most interesting characters to use and it makes sense that a healed Doctor would reconnect. (Also having River regenerate into a man as a big twist feels 100% possible from RTD)
11:51 I remember there to be a hype about Thirteen's era when she was announced! People were excited! I remember many of my friends who watch Doctor Who be excited about this era.
Well we all know what happened with Jodie rofl
Maybe I'm wrong but I thought one thing that was consistent with The Doctor was that he always wore the same outfit. The Doctor (10) and Madame de Pompadour in 1700s France, brown suit, tie and probably his converse sneakers. Doctor Who and Donna in Pompeii, brown suit, tie and his converse sneakers. Matt Smith always wore a tweed jacket and bowtie. Eccleston always wore the leather jacket and tshirt including during WW2 in The Empty Child (Rose wore a tshirt of the British flag). Their outfits never changing reminded you they were time travelers. All these costumes makes you wonder where are the clothes being stored, what happens when a companion leaves. Where is the money coming from or do they steal the clothes, etc.
Canonicaly, the Tardis has a huge wardrobe full of clothes from every time and place on Earth. It appears in several stories from the 1980's TV series.
Exactly mate. 3 separate outfits in the Xmas Special alone.
He owns a time machine with infinite space, why is storage the thing yoire concerned about lmao
@@lukiia9854 He is not going on about any storage thing. He was saying that in the past, The Doctor kept more or less the same clothes on, no matter where and when in time they go. It kept things consistent. But now, it looks like they are going to get The Doctor and his companion to change their clothes all the time. Is that a good thing or bad thing? I don't know. But I preferred it when The Doctor kept the same outfit on all the time. Plus doing that helps sell merchandise like figures etc.
@@Andy.Gledhill.Models. Yes. Thats what I meant. But now that I think about it, is it a genre thing? I dont watch a lot of scifi/fantasy but Star Trek, Farscape, BSG, Lost in Space, etc did the characters ever really change outfits? Maybe that was partly because of budget but why spend money on costumes compared to good scripts, good props, etc. How does wearing period dress/party clothes/etc enhance the plot compared to not. Like I said, The Doctor and companions were space/time travelers (I forgot the space part earlier). It makes more sense that they wouldnt have unlimited outfits than they did (not everyone knows everything about everything about the show). Or it would make sense that they wouldnt need costumes because the TARDIS or sonic screwdriver does some timey wimey stuff and like automatically translating languages automatically makes The Doctor and companions look appropriate for where/when they are (the viewer just wouldnt see it just like they dont hear aliens speaking alienese).
Another example where The Doctor should have worn something else but didnt was when he and Donna were visiting the Ood. If someone has to wear something different at least leave it to the companions. And The Doctor has been traveling for thousands of years. After a while youd think clothing would be meaningless but for someone who never traveled anywhere wearing local stuff makes sense.
I cant stress this enough and this statement counts for ALL WRITTEN CREATIVE...
I don't care what the character is. I don't care what the story is about.
Write it well.
Edit it well.
Make it compelling.
Be passionate and authentic.
Your audience and fans come first.
This is how you succeed.
No one is taking my hype for the next season. I saw spoilers photos from the set everything looks promising
the set crew is always amazing, hoping the script writing is as good as the sets
If ruby isn't an alien I'd be surprised.
For me the stupid timeless child origin needs something done with it, either alter it that the master was lying or something. It actually made more sense to me that the master is the timeless child or hell Susan. If they want to keep the timeless child thing like it is, they got to build on it or this will be the last jedi of this franchise
so the toy maker said that he made a jigsaw out of the doctors history which might be a very subtle way to say that the toy maker may have changed things so the doctor became the Timeless child and wasn't always the Timeless child . I might have read too far into it but I like to head Canon it that way because the only way it can make sense to me is if something reckoned the doctor's history in Universe and not just out of universe
I love how upbeat and positive the new doctor is. The show desperitally needed a sense of optimism and fun again.
@noaha6185 I couldn’t agree more, I feel like we lost some of Doctor’s true positivity when Matt Smith left. Capaldi’s Doctor had a mostly negative fury personality which was fine for the show with Moffet’s great writing, but with Jodie’s Doctor having messy characteristics and poor writing from Chibnall it just ruined Doctor’s positivity completely! Not anymore hopefully
I liked 15 and I liked Ruby so far, so I'm excited to see more.
i hope he keeps nailing it as he i already liked him in the crunch on ruby road
1:52 im totally calling it Nunu Who 😂

The 15th Doctor still has that baggage from finding out and being the Timeless Child though?
yes but that is not genocide level baggage. the doctor decided to not investigate further by dropping the watch in the tardis, so he can just accept it
Give me some Darleks!! We need a good story after the after-taste of Revolution of the Darleks!!
Gatwa may not be the youngest doctor but he definitely has the best skin
because it would have been weird to go from 14 directly to 16, obviously
I started watching Doctor Who very on and off since Matt Smith became the doctor, and this new Doctor is exactly what I needed to get fully invested. I can’t wait to see what’s coming, and Ncuti is fantastic.
For starting with a clean slate, I guess it makes sense that the only thing they keep is the timeless children, aka the biggest retcon of all time
I love Gatwa, but I can't help but feel how he say's "I'm the Doctor!" At the end of the Christmas Episode is off.
No that's not me being racist before someone starts, he says it fine earlier, but that one line feels off.
I also find it weird that they needed to do that line twice. Feels like the episode is trying too hard. We'd already established him, and well.
It might be that every other nuwho doctor has had a defining sort of moment in their first episodes, whether it's 11s speech, 10 opening the tardis doors or 12s moral problem in his first episode. Gatwa never really had a defining moment of who he was.
@@victorsong5953 He didn't really need one in my opinion. It's been an episode and a half, but it feels like he's always been here, his characterisation is so perfect to me. There is no moment, because the whole EPISODE was his moment.
@@victorsong5953 Could be. I don't terribly mind that, so far, as they might do so when his season begins in May
I'm glad someone said it, I love Ncuti as The Doctor and he plays it well. But there was something very odd with that final line; I don't know if it's because the soundtrack awkwardly cut out or something but it felt sorta hollow if that's the right words.
15 is 3 and Ruby is Sarah Jane, updated and with a decent budget
I was skeptical of the actual episode, but the more I think about it, the more excited I am about 15 and Ruby. They had a great dynamic, and the way Ruby just kind of rolled with the insanity was both super weird and exactly what the show needs.
And Ncuti is a great Doctor. He personifies the fun, weirdness, and hidden pain that really makes the character great.
There also HAS to be a Dalek episode, at least in the first season. Every Doctor has faced them, and he can't be the exception.

So far this era have given me the 2 most important elements of Doctor Who - enjoyment and emotional investment. As long as it continuous to give me that I'm going to think that the show is good.
Why Doctor Who NEEDS viewers. Desperately!
I just keep seeing Ncuti and millie and thinking this is going to be fantastic! I really just want to see the first series and see how Nvuti is as the doctor. Sure we’ve seen his sort of “default” part in the Christmas special but I really want to see that depth and his reactions to everything. I just always smile whenever I see him and her and know they’re just perfect.
Also Ncuti looks kinda weird here 9:14
Though this is doctor who so whenever you pause or take pictures you usually come across weird frames/odd pictures of people
Still annoyed that the TC is still a thing… but Ncuti and Millie are great
i don't love it, but at the end of the day it doesn't change much at all I'm over it now tbh
Yeah I don’t really like it but I’ve gotten over it by just ignoring it and it’s been fine.
please get over yourself
I like the Timeless Child stuff but I'm all for any fresh ideas and it seems RTD wants to make it more compelling. Plus it seems that they are turning The Timeless Child into The Toymaker's Meddling.
From that statement that he says to 14:- "I made a puzzle out of your history. Did you like it?" Or something along those lines.
@@TheHufflepuffSaintI missed that. Intriguing statement 🤔
How bright does it seem now that it appears Gibson will only have one season?
So did Zoe, Liz, Romana I, Martha, Bill and Dan
@@HarboWholmes True, but what of it? A lot of people find _e.g._ Bill's one-year arc problematic. I personally like it, but what of that? Just what the doctor ordered.
Even 14 episodes is a short series. Series are shrinking to miniseries, which they don't need to be.
9 Episodes a Year is too little, since Moffat Left we are only getting 2 months or Less Who a Year!
And Ruby has already left or asked to leave the tardis by a mouse
Aint that just a rumour?
@@itsfort is is and has been proven completely wrong!
This video aged well.
Frankly, if you are legitimately enjoying the show then enjoy these two series, or mini series or whatever because I wouldn't expect the show to be returning after that. If the actors are both looking for new work already, that should tell you something and it's not good. If you're going to say "well they can just come back in two years to shoot more", I think you already know that isn't how things work. It tells me they have probably already made the decision. Even if they are waiting to see how the regular series do, they are going to have to do big numbers and I honestly don't see that happening based on the reception to the specials.
If you're to the point where you need to adjust TV viewership numbers around to make things sound better, while ignoring the fact that streaming figures, that aren't published, are FAR more important you should really start asking yourself (if you haven't already) why exactly you're having to work so hard to make things sound better.
Taking the Disney money was a bad decision even if they had to do it to keep making the show. They now have to live up to what Disney wants from a US audience to keep that money coming and that is lose-lose situation. Now that they have the higher production value they can't just cut back and not have it look terrible. That means they have to push big numbers, super big numbers, not just okay percentages on UK TV after adjusting for this and that. If they have to do things Disney's way to keep the money coming, then the shows numbers are going to be just as bad as "The Marvels" or "Echo". The last thing "Doctor Who" should be doing is following Disney's lead. This is all assuming Disney can even afford to keep paying for "Doctor Who" with as much money as it is losing itself. Either with or without Disney's money, things are going to get worse.
You can like the show all you want, don't get me wrong, but you can't just ignore the rest of the fanbase that has been consistently leaving the show. You can't ignore a month of #RIPDoctorWho trending. You can't ignore that the numbers dropped every single episode and these were supposed to be the best of the best, not your average weekly shows. Fans did not like what Chibnall did and they don't like the doubling down RTD is doing now. They don't like the ideology heavy shows and it's consistently driving them away. They just want good stories, they don't want to hear why Davros can't be in his "wheelchair", why a "male presenting Time Lord" is too stupid, or that it's important to ask an alien it's pronouns. Again, you can like them, this is not about telling people they have to hate the show, but just the same you can't tell people they need to like it, either. Calling people "phobic" and "ists" isn't going to make them watch the show again.
I could keep going and going. I could say that waiting until May to release more episodes was a bad decision. I could counter why the "soft reboot" isn't just a bad idea but a forced one showing Disney's control wanting a "1st series". I could say why the bi-generation will just make things worse, why the Valeyard is like a "Sword of Damocles" over the show's head now or why trying to give the Doctor a new "unknown past" and "true home" is like a band-aid on a severed limb. Most of all I could point out why 2005 RTD and 2023/4 RTD are two VERY different people with two VERY different lives, situations and goals. The point is, there is SO MANY ISSUES and that does not make for a healthy show or a bright outlook. Does that mean I think or hope it's doomed to fail, absolutely not, I have loved Doctor Who. I have also loved Star Wars, Star Trek, LOTR, Marvel and a lot of other IPs I've had or have to watch die ugly, slow deaths. So, right now, I have no plans to watch in May and I'm certainly not alone and if they are chasing the mystical "modern audience" to replace all of us that have left and don't care about trying to win us back, well just look at "The Marvels" or "Echo" and you'll see how well that plan has been working for Disney.
Thank you for that very well thought out and well put view mate. I am glad that I am not alone in my views on the state of current Dr Who. I know full well why Gatwa and Gibson are not committing to a 3rd season. They will wait to see what the ratings for series 14 are like (I absolutely refuse to call it season 1). I personally think that the BBC did not need Disney's money. They have had no problem producing Dr Who on their own for 59 years. OK the effects were often clunky. But that was part of the charm. Even with Disney's money, the effects are often still bad. Look at the CGI in Wild Blue Yonder. Its sad that after me watching the show live, from at least the Troughton era. I would now be happy to see it cancelled. Instead of it continuing as a Disneyfied show. Now that is the sad part of it all. Long term fans like me have been turned away.
@@Andy.Gledhill.Models. I appreciate it, thank you. RTD doesn't need to worry about making it a success like he did back in 2005. He has had his success, he has made his money and he'll be able to make other shows regardless of what happens with Doctor Who. Everyone is talking about everything but the STORIES, but they are the most important thing. If you are putting other things ahead of the story, it's going to fail. Even in this video it was about "energy", "adjusted statistics", "the look", everything besides things like "wow, can you believe what happened". Because when you ignore all that other stuff, for 60th anniversary and Christmas specials the stories just don't compare to the 50th anniversary or Twice Upon a Time or Heaven Sent or countless other stories. I would have rather it ended with Jodie (Peter really) regenerating and been tabled. I'm afraid this is all just going to tarnish things further and make it harder to bring it back again. Sometimes deciding to stop is better than doing anything you can to keep doing it.
@@TheNuclearGeek Agree with you about stories. I was pissed off when they announced Jodie Whittaker as the new Doctor. But I decided to give her a chance. I stuck with her until the pathetic series 12 finale. Then I checked out. I only came back for her final episode. She could have been half decent if the writing had been much better. Unfortunately the writing was crap, and the stories got worse and worse. I don't see any improvement in the new RTD / Disneyfied Dr Who, at the story level. That's what they have to do. Stop all the preaching and virtue signalling, and just tell good fun stories. Sadly it looks like that won't happen.
@@Andy.Gledhill.Models. Well the fact they felt they HAD to have a woman was a mistake, but it could have been fine if they didn't keep making a big deal out of it. Calling it an "upgrade", constantly point it out, it's cringe and exhausting. They should have treated it like it was no different. The Doctor isn't a puncher, so just BE THE DOCTOR. But she was like this completely disconnected alien that can't understand humans. That isn't the Doctor. It wasn't a decision made for better storytelling or difference in perspective, it was made for political reasons and played completely wrong IMO. Missy on the other hand ABSOLUTELY felt like The Master, most of the time. I didn't care for the redemption that was then just undone when The Master was a man again. I wish they never would have done it in the first place rather than go psycho again just because he's a man again. Is it because he's not white!? I don't know. But it's really stupid if that's the case. Did racism make him crazy again!? See what I mean? You don't try to redeem a character just to undo it offscreen. That doesn't even make any sense, so you end up with that kind of mess. It was the same for Jodie, she felt like a different character, not the Doctor. That is the same mistake I feel they are making here. Ncuti has the acting talent, but they are going to focus too much on the actor being gay and black. Now, touching on him being black for story purposes here and there, no problem, but if they make sexuality a big part of the Doctor, it's DEFINATELY not the Doctor. Even black doesn't make that much sense to make a big deal out of because after ALL the black actors that have appeared on Doctor Who, are you telling me NOW the race needs focused on for some reason? Mickey never needed it. Martha never needed it. The FIRST black female Doctor didn't need it, nor any of the other black characters that have been on the show, so why now? NOW being black is going to be an issue to focus on? They didn't ignore the age difference for Peter, but didn't dwell on it either. In fact, that was the whole point of his first episode, getting Clara and the audience through her to see he is still the same man, then they moved on. However, black and gay is all they talk about with Ncuti. The bi-generation BS just makes that even worse because now he's not a continuation of The Doctor, but basically a reboot Doctor, a new character with nothing to talk about BUT the fact he's black and gay. So, they haven't learned what should be obvious - you can't be the Doctor and not be THE Doctor, then it's NOT "Doctor Who", it's "Single, Gay, Black Alien" and that's an entirely different show and if recent history is any lesson, not a good one.
@@TheNuclearGeek Well said mate. Totally agree with it all. Whittaker was awful in the role. Totally miscast. She admitted to not watching previous episodes to get an idea how to play the character. For me, she just used to run about, waving the sonic, and pulling stupid gurning faces when she had an idea on how to solve whatever the episode was all about. They are absolutely going to play on the Black and Gay angle going forward with Gatwa. Sadly I think the majority of the fans will ultimately reject him by switching off.
Honestly its a weird way of thinking about the doctor calling stuff baggage and trauma. The guy in each of nu whos iterations had a handful of episodes of "baggage". The rest of the time they acted just as carefree as ncuti lol
I'm sure this video will age well....
NGL the daddy-o thing that 15 has going on in the thumbnail really works.
on one hand, it's a good idea to give a 'clean slate', or not worrying initially about lore and character baggage with a character with as much history as dr who. but on the other hand, I don't like the way in which it's been handwaved away as tenthree/fourteen having done the work. not only am I critical of that whole narrative decision, not of the bigeneration but of rtd yet again offloading a version of the tenth dr who to settle down and play happy families with a former companion, and imo it was a bit dismissive. in order to give fifteen the character growth necessary for a good narrative, there has to be conflict, so all the healing dr who has done is going to be undone at some point, meaning that line where fifteen explains he's fine because tenthree/fourteen did the work to be fine was unnecessary for achieving that true clean slate. there's also the whole thing where it's character growth I suspect they're not going to depict onscreen, defo not on the main show and likely not in a spinoff either, which is unsatisfying. I mean, there'll certainly be a boatload of fanfiction about it as there is with rose/tentoo, but that's unintentional. I also am annoyed about how it's confirmed tenthree/fourteen is on earth because every time fifteen has a big story moment he will be overshadowed by everyone and their mother speculating on tennant's return because that plot thread is technically left open and it's just not fair. so there's that, which is going to prevent this attempt at a true clean slate from being that. I hope I'm wrong, but something tells me... also I think on the note of how there weren't moments of fun for the chibnall era companions, the shorter series length meant those were the first to go, which is really annoying considering we've barely got any series length back above what s11/12 had. I am very optimistic about the new series, but yeah. I am annoyed at some of the decisions around achieving the fresh start.
Better than the 15th Doctor's Theme!?? Impossible!
But really, that song is sooo good. We're only 1 and a half episodes into this Doctor, and already whenever that theme clicks on my brain is way too excited. It's so much fun and a Murray Gold masterpiece as always. Ruby's is really good too, but it feels a little calmer and sadder. Like I know when she leaves the show and this theme plays I'm going to be sooo sad
What I don’t understand is why Ruby immediately becomes friends with the Doctor. She trusts him completely, why? Also why would she just suddenly leave her mother and grandmother too fly off with some person she doesn’t even know?!!!!
She couldn't stop herself from being able to travel in time after deducting he could.
"Why woudl they leave their family to fly off with some person they don't even know" is literally the story of countless companions
Because she worked out based on the Houdini reference that he's a time traveller and thus could find her parents, I don't think that could have been any more obvious
I think Ruby was mostly concerned with trying to get the baby back from goblins, then the doctor seemed trustworthy and they had platonic chemistry. +She had already met him in a bar earlier in the episode.
I personally think it will be alright.
Personally? Ncuti doesn't really feel like my cup of tea seems to be a little too cold (metaphor), but it isn't enough to judge off, and I'll like him anyway, unlike 13.
I personally think the season won't be a slap banger, but it'll be fine, I'm purposefully keeping my expectations low because I'm so tired of expecting good stuff and having it ruined, so I'm keeping them low but who knows, maybe I'll actually get surprised and enjoy it more than people who have watched one episode and decided the season is the best thing since sliced bread (I hate both sides, you're all... Bit... Ur... Lame. You can't make a judgement call from a tiny bit of an episode and a Christmas Special, regardless of if you hate or love it.)
I also hate the new almost Star Wars and Marvel Disney+ 9 episode season format. It honestly feels really disingenuous, and I think it shows that corporate greed may have infected it to try and get some cash quickly while putting a minimal amount of effort in. Who knows.
If you can't tell... This is my PERSONAL opinion. You are welcome to agree or disagree, I just heed that you try to keep a level head.
@@zombiedalekweck2243To be fair on your part the 9 episodes does make you think of similarities to the Marvel TV shows having 9 episodes too but I think the number of episodes is a coincidence if anything else especially since Disney doesn’t have any core control on what happens with the show, especially not on the number of episodes being produced in the series

How many times can they destroy Gallifrey? Come on now.
if we include the extended Universe like Books , comics & audio dramas 246 probably
Personally, I think they need the 15th doctor because it would be really confusing if the 16th came next.
Gatwa has sold me on his incarnation immediately, really looking forward to see what else he brings
Its not that i want constant boo hoo character trauma and stuff. But I dont really know who Ruby is as a character, on their first episodes alone we knew who Amy and Rose where.
Lets hope that Disneys influence on doctor who doesn't bring doctor who down like they are doing with the marvel or Star wars
As a Classic Who and NuWho fan, that perfect dissociation from 14 to 15 feels too definitive for me. I feel like RTD put to rest the character from 1963 and 15 is just another dude, a copy because he isn't even inhabiting the same body as the Doctor we know. Even if he isn't, he feels like a clone complete with Clone Tardis but for a new generation with brand new sexuality, skin color and free of baggage. Like RTD's version of Doctor Clara. If 14 had only properly transformed into 15 it wouldn't feel like Gatwa is playing a different dude.
True, I enjoy gatwa but I'm not hyped and I feel fans are just pretending or forcing themselves to be hyped when nobody important cares anymore
I just think Ruby is kind of boring and generic. They play up the chemistry btw her and the Doctor, but I don't think the script supports this. Sure, she thought he was cute dancing and he teleported to talk to her in the club. But she doesn't seem to ask any questions about what's going on, doesn't even blink at stuff like goblins or time travel. All she cares about is her birthday and her foundling story. Is that why the Doctor likes her? She won't ask too many annoying questions?
why is the doctor investigating ruby Sunday ?? ( still say degrading time loop ???) that is a lot of expectation
Why do you keep on mispronouncing your /th/ and final /l/? Is English not your first language? (not that there's anything wrong with that, just curious)
it's probably just his accent
I love just how fun it is, if you know what i mean. It's why i watch dr who, i love peisodes like the giant wasp one and some of the clara stuff ad they are just fun and amy
6:51 - 7:02 Okay, now you're exaggerating! Yaz and Thirteen didn't hate each other, they were arguing with each other as Yaz was frustrated that the Doctor was holding something back from her! Like, I see the flaws of Chibnall's writing so clearly even though Thirteen was my favorite Doctor (she's in second place now because of Fifteen) and yes, Yaz, Graham and Ryan, basically had one third of one personality split between them. But it wasn't like they never smiled or had fun or were excited about what they were experiencing!
I love your videos (I always agree with you when it comes to defending the despised!) the but sometimes, when it comes to Chibnall, I think you're being too negative. That's why I'm curious to when you get to review Thirteen's era since I doubt there isn't some episode where you genuinely have something nice to say about the plot or the characters.
9:00 See? 😀
imo we need a fresh young new showrunner, cause the stories in dw are repeating themselves. ofc good writing etc. is a required for making it good.
The doctor's tortured backstory is what made him interesting in the new show. However, the timeless child should have been ignored entirely. Shame RTD decided to go along with it. Though, maybe he has something else in store. It'd be incredible if RTD brought The Trickster into doctor who and he was the reason behind all the nonsense. I'd love to see the doctor battle The Trickster.
…this aged well

4:12 - 5:35 The actress was revealed to be leaving the show after this series…(after this one episode had aired) the day this video went up.
@@gtc9966 is just revealed that those were just rumors made up by tabloid articles and she's coming back!
I'm not gonna bother watching this, because the only reasonable answer to "Why Doctor Who NEEDS The 15th Doctor" is "because this show needs to be cancelled and he's gonna tank the ratings hard enough that it just might happen", but I somehow doubt that's going to be what he says.
My view too. But when I say the show is now crap, and the ratings are going to tank. I get all the hate from arrogant people that think its good.
I swear there are so many Doctor Who "fans" more dedicated to hating the show than liking it. No kidding that a show made in 2023 isn't going to be the same as one made from the 1960s/70s-80s. They sound like the Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons.
So? They can hate it if they want. They don't have to be ok with it if they think something is wrong, and something is most definitely wrong.
they are saying the ratings have dropped since 2008 when there has been so manhy changes totelevision since that, and of course because of chibnall's era people aren't coming back. Doesn't mean the show is dead, it has a loving fanbase and a series 2 already filming.
You know when a show ends badly (Game of Thrones) and you don’t feel inclined to watch it again? For the first time in my 48 years who-love. I’m embarrassed by the show, I’m glad that it’s got shorter seasons and that hopefully we only have a 2 season Doctor and Ruby. I could be wrong, but from what I’m hearing they are going to enhance the controversy. I’m going to still get all excited when the show starts again in May. I hope I’m wrong and my estrangement from Doctor Who will end.
Glad someone has a similar opinion to me mate. There are far too many fans that will blindly watch it and praise it all. Even if it is a heap of crap.
although I wasnt a big fan of russels first era, nor the specials. i am so excited to witness ncuti at his best!

I really don't care what color his skin is. I really don't care what his gender recognition is. For what I have seen , he seems to be a likable person, fun and lots of life. Just give him the key to the TARDIS and see what he can do with it. I believe he is going to be a good Doctor. Not great but good. at least better then Jodie Whittaker.
It's not Ncuti I'm worried about. It's RTD and the writing team. If this flops like the Chibnall era he'll be the scape goat, the beeb will blame 'racist' fans and then Tennant can swoop in.
I think even tennant's not enough to save it, if they dont improve the writing and current direction of the show it's gonna get worse, not to mention a lot of people probably dont trust the show now
All the haters can watch other shows, i myself will go see it no matter what. The rest can cry forever i don't about your opinions. Lets go..
well lets hope that they dont leave, if more and more people tune out it will get cancelled again and then their opinions will matter to you lol

I don't see why you needed to keep trashing the Chibnall era to try to make this era sound good - especially since it comes across like you haven't even seen the Chibnall era episodes.
Which is weird.
I think that we didn't need a "bi-genaration" (?) to get a more joyful and playful Doctor. The character, at least in new Who, has always been that way, there's nothing new or revolutionary in Fifteen dancing in the club, if we think about all the silly and funny scenes that we have witnessed in the last 19 years. This whole "bi-generation" thing is just a cheap way to keep Tennant available, but it's poorly written and doesn't make any sense. They could figure out some more consistent Time-Lord shenanigan to keep Tennant "alive" in some capacity, without "erasing" the Doctor's past and evolution in an even worse way than the Timeless Child did.
