Cavity closer? To prevent the plasterboard being cold on the back side where the cavity is....and causing a cold spot on the inside, leading to condensation and mould growth from the heat in the house. A thermal bridge via the open cavity.
Totally agree. I had to explain to my builder what the purpose of a cavity closer was. There's a lot of ignorance in the building trade about the problems with cold bridging. But as you know, don't get it right and you've got a problem that doesn't go away. Unfortunately too many home owners are unaware, and rely on the trades to do everything properly, doh!
Another superb video, loads of information and relaxing to watch. That too wide inner opening is the result of not being able to use an angle grinder in an occupied house. There are dust catchers for angle grinders but nobody has made an affordable tool that will cut an opening in an 11 inch wall from the outside. I had a diamond chain saw that would do it but the chains were £200 so I am back to chain drilling down the wall to keep it on the line.
Festool do a nice 125mm angle grinder with a very good dust catching attachment. It's more suited for chasing but it will cut a nice straight reference edge and you could drill and chip the remaining brick or block. They only release a tiny amount of dust on the initial part of the plunge, thereafter no dust escapes.
You are a plethora of information. Techniques, mindset and dedication to work is first class. As a site manager and carpenter, having worked with an amazing amount of tradesperson over the years, I have picked up so much from watching and listen to you. Great work
OMG, Bodge-it & Run window fitters have been at it again! Kango'd inner blockwork given a good old shake to loosen all the mortar. Inadequate lintol bearing on broken blockwork with no padstones. No cavity closure. No vertical DPC. No insulation at closure. Used inappropriate lintol, with no built-in insulation, and which seems to be leaning over more than the sloping sides would normally as well as not being square in opening. That's going to suffer all manner of cold bridging, with interstitial damp soaking into the plasterboard causing it to soften & fail. Plus bonding doesn't like damp areas. And the plaster at the top corners is likely to crack if the end bearings fail under load. But I guess the window fitters will be long gone before the householder realises it. Anyway, in the circumstances, it's remarkable to have worked round all those problems & hidden all the window fitters' bodges with a nice finish in only 3½ hrs!
Great work and the foam is a good idea but really the cavity needs closing with insulated cavity closers. The builders who constructed my house didn't use these and I have cold spots on EVERY window reveal, resulting in mould/ wallpaper curling off. Having to cut back plaster on all reveals in every room to remedy this - something I wish I knew before I decorated! Still, nice plastering - great of you to share.
Been a dryliner for 30 + years Nice to see a proper plasterer giving Helpful and the proper advice for people to watch And gain the tips of the trade Nice clean tidy work mate
Thankyou so much for taking the time to make these videos and share your skills and knowledge. I am refurbishing an old bungalow and picking up tips all the time. Most of all thank you for making me smile.
Thanks Kirk, been watching this video a lot to help me do my first window boxing out, get yourself a Easter egg pal! Great videos and content. Keep up the good work!!
You have done a great job mate. I fitted windows for many years and can tell you your standard is great. Nice, nice workmanship. Make sure you charge enough for your workmanship.
Favourite video so far. This was great, you never know what youre going to get in domestic situations, far more varied and complex compared to site. You not only showed the problems you need to overcome but gave a step by step guide. Thanks and I hope you do more of these!
I was working in a house this holiday and I saw something beautiful. instead of doing straight trim around the windows, the client did it on the sides at a 45-degree angle. Thanks to this, the window sill is longer more sunlight coming in and the whole thing looks nice.
I can't believe you managed to sort out that massive gap in one day. Incredible. Looking at that finish you would never guess what it looked like a few hours before. Really impressive job, thanks for sharing 👍🏿👍🏿
Great channel, love your work, can I just add ,, if you added a couple of handfuls of cement into the adhesive mix it would of gone off in literally a quarter off the time, that way negates the need for the Bonding coat because your actually able to get a more than acceptable finish ready to plaster with the application of adhesive!
As a ex plasterer (retired to go travelling around the world) you make me miss it. Really enjoy watching this mate. One tip for you as a big guy is screw a piece of wood on your create so your foot doesn't go through. Cheers mate and take care
Used to work for a window company, we could of done with someone like yourself, great job, brilliant finish, I wouldn’t have thought this much building out was possible in that amount of time, I’ve learnt a lot from this vid, thank you 👍
Nice to see a plasterer taking time to get the reveals square, I’m the bloke who’d fit the sills! I’ve had reveals that have been anything up to 10mm out of square which means scribing, more time etc.Earned yourself a sub mate👍🏻
Good to see how it works to fill up the gaps. I waiting 5 weeks for the guy who make the new windows one with my walls for my house in Hungary... he don't come, so I have to do it myself. Thanks for sharing this video!
I`m a window Installer that does this often. Sometimes I do the lot, sometimes I get a plasterer in, depending how busy I am. The only things I would suggest.... ?.Have a few oddments of skip dived kingspan on the van an wedge that in as a thermal break /cavity closer which also gives you more to foam /dab the board to. Also , if the lintel is flat and down level with the window, I would use a couple of self drilling drywall screws to fix board to the head. I know technically you shouldn`t drill lintels but hey! I normally skim the whole wall if it`s a small wall but to be fair , that`s because I`m not overly confident at blending, might give blending a go next time. Great tradesman though, loving these vids!
Great videos! As an ex plasterer (now Operations Manager) I like the way you work. I would be a little worried about the baring on that internal lintel mind (not your issue I know).
This is one of the best videos I’ve seen on plastering, lots of excellent tips which are things you would only normally learn from experience. I’m doing a garage conversion for myself after Easter so well chuffed to have watched this.
Another great video mate. I don’t think there is anything wrong with reminding people to subscribe to your channel and give a thumbs up after all they are informative and some of them are funny.
I always prefer the grey bonding over the pink as it's much better to work with and cleans up easier as well 👍 For the more experienced plasterers you can always use some renderlite finish when mixing the bonding and it sets in about 10-15mins 😊
Hi Kirk, thanks for reply. I rmbr you said to post another comment cos you don't get alerts for replies of replies. I used a roller to put sbr on. Urgh there was so many variables on the job. It was cold, the air was damp, half the ceiling was replaced due to flood damage. However i sbr'd the new plasterboard to make it all go off at same time. I thought maybe it had frozen in the van and thawed but it worked fine on the plasterboard, no blisters so wasn't faulty sbr. They were like little bubbles you get sometimes going over bonding but they didn't do the rice krispie poppin, they just stayed there and was flippin thousands of them. Just my luck 😂 a lot of them flattened during the process but some stayed the whole way thru and could only get rid of them when half the ceiling had gone dark. I did speedskim after laying on but don't think it was that either. I took pics but obv no way to show you. I was quite surprised at it tbh. Thanks mate 👍
excellent.. ❤ explained perfectly.. i was taught to throw in a few handfuls of finishing plaster to the bonding mixto make it go off quicker.. is that a thing? seems to have worked so far for me. 😀
There’s so many videos showing people plastering full walls with all the fittings removed and no holes. As a DIYer, I never get that opportunity and it’s all patching work so this video is great!!!
Love these types of videos, not just your normal straight forward job, as a young plasterer new to the trade I find that it’s never a straight forward job like you see in plastering tutorials so please keep these coming, thanks mate 👍
Fantastic video as always. What I like is that you cover real world scenarios, other RUclipsrs do tutorials on plastering a new wall….but everything is perfect, the prep is done and usually there are no sockets, rad brackets etc. One point to make: there should be a DPC fitted - which goes vertically, it’s tucked into the cavity and comes across a bit of the window frame. Then when your plasterboard goes in, it can’t touch the external brickwork. Any DPC poking out by the window frame can later be trimmed. Cavity closures could’ve been used. Any plasterboard or bonding touching the external skin is very likely to track damp and eventually the window company will get a recall from the customer. However correct damp arrangements are the responsibility of the window company…..it’s good that as a plasterer you are thinking about this…but really it shouldn’t be a consideration.
Top comment. I can't say everything I want to say on a video because obviously it's not good practice to pull faults with what the builder has done when he's giving you work
Last time I was doing that around my patio doors. I removed wood and sticked plasterboard instead, but I used only expanding foam as adhesive and blocked all boards with pieces of timber for time of seting.
i love this video and have a similar job that needs to be done in a double-bricked house. I'm not a builder so have to rely on asking how to do this and watching RUclips. One thing that concerns me is the drywall is not very good for moisture and I'm looking for confirmation of this or an alternative solution, like PVC or something? What do you think?
Good shout Bill. Its something that I've mentioned in the past but you know how it goes. All they want me to do is get the plastering done nice but I do agree with you
Very interesting., and a job well done I'm doing the same job tomorrow, and picked up some tips Just one question though. As you skimmed 3 quarters of the wall, was there a reason for not doing it all, and making a better finish for repapering? Just wondering.
It was blended in perfectly, it actually would of been easier to plaster the whole wall. That said... the reason I didn't was because they hadn't stripped the wallpaper back enough.

Can’t Beat these videos. Kieron is a lucky lad . I paid £1000’s to learn plastering on a 6 month course . Worked for FREE for 4 months as well . JUST TO LEARN . Doing my own jobs now , love it . Would have LOVED a teacher like yourself , I had a mad sniff head who was 100mph and burnt me out . Left him after 4 months and started doing skimming, bonding , blue grit , all the good stuff myself. I’m defo gonna try SBR now The guy I worked for free did teach me A LOT but never paid me one p . disgusting . So yeah Kieron ur a lucky lad pal Best of luck 🤞🏻
You should join my Coaching group mate, you'd love it. Sales and marketing accelerator Camp Its all about how to get loads more work and how to earn more money. Take thus as your personal invitation
@@Onthetrowel Haha cheers buddy! I’m off for 2 weeks now, so I’ve been trying to get my sleep pattern in order. So sadly I got behind on my RUclips watching 😅
Don't need a setsquare to square off your reveals. Use your trowel! Been doing this for years. Your hawk is handy for larger areas and screeding as well
U did well there Kirk great job with no time to do it but reckon ide have have told the window firm that it needed a timber window board it’s less work for u and a much better and stronger surface ok they may have had to have got a chip pie in but that’s not ur problem is it still that said u made a silk purse out of a pigs ear there mate great stuff
thanks for that super fast response one of my favourite youtubers i do like like the as it is plastering in the real world cause houses arent perfect 3 beers from me or what ever you put it to keep up the good work👍👍👍👍
I love your video, when I was a labourer the plasterer wouldn't let me cut a board unless I cut down using a level. I could always cut straight so still don't get it

Board edge bead very handy for stuff like that just screw it onto the window frame slot your boards into it and stick the inside edge...

Is that cavity around the window not getting filled out with insulation then? That will make the heat from the house escaping through there?
Still using inches your a man after my own heart 👍🏻
I always pack the cavity with rockwool if u can't get a cavity closure in..... just helps stop cold spots.

Thanks for your reply mate
Another great video Kirk. Full of advice and tips in a real work setting. I always enjoy your videos. Thank you.
Very welcome
Great video , what a finish in no time , hope the builder gave you a brucie bonus , sorting that mess out 👍
🤞
Nice Plaster work. I Guess the whole Insulation thing hasn't hit your country yet. You should try it keeps the house warm.
You said you work alongside this builder alot. If thats the case, do they always mess up the brick cuts?
Kirk i didn't see any insulation in-between that walls ,is that normal. By the way love the vids mate. Very informative.👍
We tend to plaster full wall rather than spend time blending in. But great work big fella
same
Brilliant Kirk, keep em coming👌You won't be the only one feeling a bit groggy this Friday morning🤣🍻
Hahaha got to wash down the dust 🙂
Great video, I feel for you making good somebody else's shoddy work. I used to paint new houses and we were forever clearing up after plasterers 🤣🤣🤣

Really enjoyed that tutorial, brilliant explanation, thanks for sharing your knowledge, years of expertise in a short video. Top, top man.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Did I miss how you filled in the lintel?kindest regards tim
The discrepancy between the inner and outer skin is a perfect opportunity to line the reveals with 27-37.5mm insulated plasterboard
Good shout, we just didn't have any
Wouldn't pass building control
@Louis Burgess why?
Brilliant video 😂
because you're supposed to use cavity closers @@gazdkw82
Great work by you but the cut out of the new window opening was so poor and the bearing of the lintel to the wall doesn't comply with standard building practices.
Hi I’m a chippy I enjoy your vids , is there any reason why the header plasterboard isn’t supported by the two sides either end ? Every chance I missed that bit by the way 😂

Have you ever tried Sticks like Turbo for putting beads up? Works a treat
That lintle is doing naff all 50mm purchase madness they would have had the 100 needed had they not butchered the blocks ha. Fair play tho defo polished a turd 👌
The builder has left you a mission there m8
Wow fantastic work, great workmen ship.
For that job I used xps or plasterboard with xps and after that u don't have wet wall in winter
I noticed the sides of the windows have no DPC to stop dampness striking through being an x brickie we always put DPC in and has you pointed out the lintel is to near the edge of the plaster
This video is exactly what I needed. Thank you!!!
Top notch job 👍
So happy i stumbled across your channel
Nice to have you on board mate
Could have a condensation problem on revale with cold air circulation in cavity
I'm with you mate, fortunately cavity was insulated
Lovely stuff
Would you be best off using adhesive instead of bonding around edges to fill gaps if you have time then? And how come not hardwall? Thanks
Sound job mate
Great Job. I'm in a similar predicament so this video dropped at the perfect time ;)
Glad it was helpful!
Can you explain about the adhesive? What is it and what brand you using?
Ive seen that type of construction in actual builds before for some reason, there's like an extra 2 inches more in the aperture on the inside course from the facing bricks side. No idea why they arent built level?
Can’t Beat these videos. Kieron is a lucky lad . I paid £1000’s to learn plastering on a 6 month course . Worked for FREE for 4 months as well . JUST TO LEARN . Doing my own jobs now , love it .
Would have LOVED a teacher like yourself , I had a mad sniff head who was 100mph and burnt me out . Left him after 4 months and started doing skimming, bonding , blue grit , all the good stuff myself.
I’m defo gonna try SBR now
The guy I worked for free did teach me A LOT but never paid me one p . disgusting . So yeah Kieron ur a lucky lad pal
Best of luck 🤞🏻

Nice Video, great detail thoroughly enjoyed.👍
Glad it was helpful!
Absolutely fantastic buddy. Lovely to see such real world examples like this.
Marcus is back, I was starting to wory about you pal
@@Onthetrowel Haha cheers buddy! I’m off for 2 weeks now, so I’ve been trying to get my sleep pattern in order. So sadly I got behind on my RUclips watching 😅
Loving your channel brother. Lots of love from Dublin Ireland 🇮🇪
Don't need a setsquare to square off your reveals. Use your trowel! Been doing this for years. Your hawk is handy for larger areas and screeding as well
A set square will be exactly square your trowel will be worn away out of square, especially if it’s years old
Could uses out of date board adhesive that goes off quickly for small jobs
U did well there Kirk great job with no time to do it but reckon ide have have told the window firm that it needed a timber window board it’s less work for u and a much better and stronger surface ok they may have had to have got a chip pie in but that’s not ur problem is it still that said u made a silk purse out of a pigs ear there mate great stuff
thanks for that super fast response one of my favourite youtubers i do like like the as it is plastering in the real world cause houses arent perfect 3 beers from me or what ever you put it to keep up the good work👍👍👍👍
Legend thankyou mate
I like the job your doing I use bonding because you can build up a lot of it behind the board.
I love your video, when I was a labourer the plasterer wouldn't let me cut a board unless I cut down using a level. I could always cut straight so still don't get it
Putting yourself out there for criticism and or praise . Sharing knowledge . Fair play more strength to ya mate 👍.
What did they cut that opening with, a beaver? 🦫🤦♂️😂
Great job 👍
Done this so many times to get the job done faster mate 🤣 never that quick though.......wow 👏
Cheers mate... I'll get that solid plastering vid done soon
@@Onthetrowel top man much appreciated 👊🏻
how did you stick the plasterboard to the metal lentil at the top? thanks
Insulated tile backer board is good for this job.
Beautiful job mate
