The FX6 gets out of the way so you can get into the story. For a solo operator it’s ideal. Rigging it up to be on shoulder is like $600. Internal auto VND is incredible. The 12800 upper base ISO is so good for run and gun doc work, plus the image is solid.
Ok so I hear ppl talking about camera this and camera that, I hear FX6 and Red Komodo that. This is just my 2 cents. Get what you feel makes it easy to do your job and just focus on the art. There is no right or wrong camera. I don’t care what you use as long as YOU are happy with the work flow, it’s the person that control’s the camera. BUT NO ONE IS TALKING ABOUT LIGHTING!!!!! Invest in lighting before getting ANY new camera, that is where the cinema really starts. Get some super dope Key Lights Soft and back lights then make this decision. Peace hope this helps.
Currently I’m running and gunning with the DJI ronin 4D, the Komodo has crossed my radar, simply put my current set up limits my capabilities and a lot of the gigs I book are because of the gear I have. Thanks for sharing.
I was in your position like 3 days ago. I had enough to buy either a Komodo or a FX6. I love how the Komodo renders. That RED RAW is gorgeous but buying it doesn’t stop at the body. FX6 is such a complete package. Internal ND, all the plug ins and all, great image quality but it comes with lots of quirks. I am still in my run and gun phase and I don’t have much docu or proper sets. I ended up with the FX3 instead because of its usability. I can pick it up and will just work.
I just rented the FX6 for the first time on a shoot out in NY, paired with a Zeiss 50mm T2.1 CP3 lens I absolutely enjoyed and fell in love with it. I am also a run and gun shooter who also would love to stay in the documentary filmmaker space.. low light capabilities equipped with built in ND's, I am now SOLD!
I think it’s preference and what you wanna shoot. I’m very ‘run and gun’ and love the FX6. The Cine EI is fantastic, VNDs, full size XLRs, full frame (the list goes on) Plus, you can get an excellent image from it
Super insightful. I've been an FX6 owner/operator for over two years now. It isn't perfect by any means, but between the autofocus, image quality, and low light capabilities, it's very close (for me). Also once you've used the VND on the FX6 it's very difficult to go back to matte boxes or screw-on ND filters. The image quality of the Komodo is superb, but I think you'll be sold when you get your hands on an FX6. I wish you luck on finding camera satisfaction!
The autofocus has gotten so good I strip it down and run and gun all the time with my kid. I have a c70 and at times I feel the Komodo focus is more accurate. I hardly use my c70,now.
I was on this very dilemma a month ago, what made it even harder was the fact that I already own an Fx3 and Fs7 so going the Komodo route was not only a drastic change to my entire lens investment but also my usual run and gun habits. So the choice was made and I got the Fx6
I’m an FX3 owner. I’m a sports creative (just retired actually) so mobility has always been my number 1 concern. Image wise, I can get an amazing image out of the camera (same sensor as FX6) and love the form factor. I would love to have the internal ND’s of the FX6, but using the tilta mirage Matte box with VND is super simple to switch between every lens I own. I like to rig out my whole setup with rails and a monitor and all the like, but it’s incredibly easy to use with a minimalist setup. For my money, it was a no brained to save the $2600 and purchase the FX3 over the FX6.
I was considering the Komodo for a longtime to step up from my Bmpcc 6K, but bought the Canon C70 instead six month ago and I like it so much I just bought a second one.
I have a red komodo as well I bought it and fully rigged it out for doc work but sadly I must say it definitely isn't a run and gun camera too many things to think about I literally don't power the camera down in fear I may miss a shot. scratch audio is not usable and if you like shooting slow motion you have to crop in to the sensor. but I must say the 6k red raw HQ is very clean when you have a lot of light. this camera is light hungry. sorry for the rant because like you I have been thinking of getting rid of it of a fx6 to go with my a7siii.
Different tools for different jobs! I’ve thought about copping a C70 for those times that I juts want to pick up the camera and go. The FX6 looks appealing, but switching to E-Mount lenses again seems cumbersome.
I'm not an FX6 owner but I did a lot of research on it but ended up with an FX3 (I love it). I think it'd be worth it to get your hands on an FX6 at least. From the sounds of it, with your needs, the FX6 would definitely be more ideal for your type of shooting situation. I think it'd work perfectly for run&gun but also very well for commercial work. I'll eventually get an FX6 and turn my FX3 into a B-Cam. That being said though, with the use of my Tilta Mirage VND matte box, it's checking off all the boxes of my needs and definitely don't regret the purchase. It allowed me more room to get the extra gear I wouldn't have been able to afford had I immediately gone with the FX6. Hope this insight helps! Also side note, the FX3 has built in image stabilization which the FX6 does not have.
The change from Komodo to FX6 is a sacrifitial ritual of quality Vs convenience. The FX6 is great, but its muddy in the shadows and generally feels like the quality isn't as prestine. Now it's still great, many great things have been shot with it but we as "filmmakers" tend to go for that extra 10%. I feel like Komodo for those type of Sports docs/branded content is just a better solution unless you are out in the elements a lot. Stick a quality VND onto the Komodo, use a recorder when you need audio and you're set. I don't think it's that much of a hassle. Best to rent it for a weekend and use it.
@@MosesVega. Ideal world having both would be awesome. The more creative jobs Komodo, everything else Sony. Both gets you on second shooter jobs tho. If documentary is what you want to focus on than hands down without a second thought get the FX6, the FX6 might be the best doc camera ever made ... In terms of a user experience, the FX6 is the best camera I've ever used - everything is quick, easy and intuitive - it just gets out of your way and allows you to focus on story / the bigger picture rather than fiddling around with gear. I think the Komodo being global shutter is great for dodge LED lights, but then it's a bit weak in low light. Owning both cameras are great, but to me I would go for FX6 but I still think Komodo has its own strengths.
Really interesting to see someone say this and somewhat relieving as I’ve been considering the fx3 as I’m planning to upgrade this month from an iPhone to a much higher level for my RUclips

@@MosesVega. I know I’m very fortunate to have both. And i do shoot a ton of run and gun with the Komodo. Obviously it has its considerations, but I roll with no monitor or my phone as a monitor quite often to bypass any SDI nonsense. But it’s still not as easy as an FX6 or C70. If it’s going to be your only cam as much as I love the Komodo I’d say pass on it.
Same thought brother… so much extra work. Slow boot up, SDI protocol, blackshading… also not a good form factor for stealthy run and gun in the city, etc. I own one, but sometimes think an FX3 would be smarter.

In this day and age where you can rent out practically every piece of equipment, there is no excuse for “ did I buy the wrong camera” unless you bought it for clickbait and flexing purposes without thinking it through.
For me it was out of Komodo or c70 at first. After weighing out my options and thinking it through I landed on komodo. As I’ve learned about what I want to be making more of then I think my needs / work flow changed.
The internal ND, dual XLR ports, large high brightness LCD monitor and ability to record all day on an affordable T5 SSD and amazing menu system makes the BMPCC 6k pro an amazing option as well if you shoot manual focus lenses. But the cost for good AF is you really need to buy G Master lenses. Perhaps connect with and hire someone with a Komodo to help you with your workflow though, because that seems like the process is inconvenient.

@@MosesVega. You can't beat the fx6 for doc work, but the komodo with the canon vnd adapter and using the tentacle sync stuff for audio solves a lot of problem. The tentacle takes a bit to figure out but it makes everything so easy on the back end and you don't nee xlr's. I don't notice a large drop in quality using the vnd mekie is a solid budget version. But then you get the easy button of shooting on red r3d files. So much easier to get the look you want out of them and expose in difficult lighting situations (dynamic range stuff). But you won't have low light, thats the real kicker.
As a true cinema camera should. If your workflow doesn’t mesh with the Komodo then it’s just that. Use it for when you dabble in Docs etc. Get the Fx6 so you can continue working your run n gun. You can get both the skies the limit… owner operators all the way. Good luck out there
Komodo captures great images, but so does the FX6 Komodo is geared more towards productions where you can swap out filters The FX6 with the electronic VND sounds like a great run n gun cam, especially for documentaries I've used the FS5 and I enjoyed it's ergonomics, I know the FX6 is supposed to be very similar
i think you can do it all with red komodo specially if you had a lot of canon lens that will be lose money if you sell it all with the camera to buy a sony new stuff
I love my Komodo, but it's not really designed for documentary work, as you mentioned. If the FX6 better suits what you want to be doing, maybe trade the Red? They're all just tools at the end of the day. If you need a hammer, get yourself a hammer :)
I’m open to trade or sell if it comes down to it. Later down the road if I feel like I want it again, I’ll just get it again. I can’t keep emotionally attaching myself to these things. After all they’re just tools as you mentioned.
i think red marketed the komodo to much run and gun. red is a beast of a choice for controlled environments in my opinion and fx 6 is the choice for spontanious documentary style shootings. simple as that
Thank you for your insight into living with a komodo, and the tiresome workflow. I'm very happy I went for an a7iv instead. I have also felt that lust for the red name, thinking it's somehow special, but I have since become estranged from the brand after learning how anti consumer they are and how they're patent trolling a simple mathematical average of 4 green pixels. The reality is red barely registers on the charts with cannes film festival films and basically everywhere else. (They're competing with sony mirrorless there in terms of number of films). They're holding the whole industry back and I hope Nikon succeeds in court. The camera may or may not be great but I'm too picky about these kinds of things to buy into such a company. The komodo was meant to be a cinema gopro crashcam and yet only *now* have they added gyro data for true stabilisation when that's like the *ONE* feature you want from an action cam. What's hilarious to me is the gyro was there the entire time and in the forums people asked for it and they were mean about it and said it can't do it.

In an ideal world I’d do both. Obviously one would take away from the other but if I can do a little of both I’d be happy. If I had to choose I’d work on docs start to finish.
@@MosesVega. sony has a big piece of the doc world so if you'r freelancing there may be a lot of people asking you to use sony.
Yeh man…. I have 2 Komodos…. Exact same situation here… bought the fx6 last week…. Cannot put it down
🔥🔥 any cons you saw right away w/ fx6 ?
As a true cinema camera should. If your workflow doesn’t mesh with the Komodo then it’s just that. Use it for when you dabble in Docs etc. Get the Fx6 so you can continue working your run n gun. You can get both the skies the limit… owner operators all the way. Good luck out there
DAMN 1k VIEWS IN A DAYYYY my boy on it!
audios low af btw lol
Komodo captures great images, but so does the FX6
Komodo is geared more towards productions where you can swap out filters
The FX6 with the electronic VND sounds like a great run n gun cam, especially for documentaries
I've used the FS5 and I enjoyed it's ergonomics, I know the FX6 is supposed to be very similar
This may be a dummy question but did you consider the sigma FP for you run and gun situations ?
Can’t say I have considered it
i think you can do it all with red komodo specially if you had a lot of canon lens that will be lose money if you sell it all with the camera to buy a sony new stuff
You know, it’s really reframe the way I’m thinking of this “problem”.
What’s the name of the guy you mentioned? I can’t spell his name because English isn’t my first language
His name is Lewis Potts
@@MosesVega.
Thanks 🙏
I love my Komodo, but it's not really designed for documentary work, as you mentioned. If the FX6 better suits what you want to be doing, maybe trade the Red? They're all just tools at the end of the day. If you need a hammer, get yourself a hammer :)
I’m open to trade or sell if it comes down to it. Later down the road if I feel like I want it again, I’ll just get it again. I can’t keep emotionally attaching myself to these things. After all they’re just tools as you mentioned.
Arri is best but mini is useable
i think red marketed the komodo to much run and gun. red is a beast of a choice for controlled environments in my opinion and fx 6 is the choice for spontanious documentary style shootings. simple as that
Join The Art of Documentary Academy! Doors open in September. See you on the inside bro! FX6 is the perfect doc setup.
I joined a while ago when they first opened. Big fan of Mark Bone! It’s probably why Ive been learning so much about the fx6 haha
FX6 all day
very helpful vid , but i can't look over the fact u look like drake
😂😂😂
I’ll trade you
Bro come grab my C70 and Red Raven and give me that Komodo 🤣
😂😂
It’s just a camera
You right
go buy a canon r5c
