I hit the adoptee lottery !! April 29, 2017 I received my Ancestry DNA results. My top match turned out to be my Uncle on my Father's side. Lots of 1st and second cousins on his side. We have been talking since mid May and will be meeting in September !! On my BioMothers side I had a second cousin match. Through messaging and digging I found my BioMother and halfsibling and cousins. We too will be meeting in September !! Thank you Ancestry DNA !!!!!

I sincerely pray that all of you find happiness in your searches. I'm getting excited for each of you as I read your stories. To have been adopted & having these nagging questions hanging over your heads all these years & then thru DNA you are suddenly able to locate a close blood relative is amazingly awesome! Who would have known? It makes you wonder "whats around the IT corner?" (I'm still riding high considering my results when they do come in.)

He isnt the man I was told was my father, so at age 45 this is shock! but thanks to back tracking via DNA matches, I've found him! and he and his family have full accepted me with open arms! Had I not taken the DNA test I'd of never known and my father wouldn't have either as he never knew about me either!! Thank you so much Ancestry!

This video is several years old but very helpful to me. My biological niece recently found me through taking the Ancestry DNA test. She's an adoptee and was looking for her birth father. It turns out that her birth father is my half-brother who was also given up for adoption. It's a fascinating story and I'm glad that we all found each other.

About 6 years ago I set up a separate tree for my husband and entered all of the information I had on his biological family. Then last year I attached his DNA, and two weeks ago I was contacted by his first cousin and now he has connections to brothers and a sister. It took a long time, a lot of patience, and the fact that other family members were looking for him too and gambled on submitting their DNA. Very Cool.

I always hoped there would be a way I could even find one of his family, but I don’t have a lot of hope I ever can. I get sooo excited though for people when they do, especially with ancestry and similar because I know how it feels to have so many questions and trying to find lost family. Ive done the ancestry dna test though because I’m just thankful to hopefully get some information about possible ethnicities I have. Eagerly waiting on my results.

Thanks Christa - for the encouragement l
My grandmother pretty much raised me until I was 6, & regularly visited or wrote to her siblings. I've only recently realized that these were actually her aunts & uncles- she'd been raised by a grandmother. I do share DNA with that family, & am in contact with another descendant- a 3C.
(I have reason to believe that Gram had no idea of this til she was 63 - i remember the change in her. )
It w a seem that one of the sisters had been her mother- to my way of thinking, probably the one who'd told her on her deathbed.
That left me looking for her father.
My DNA matches are loaded with links to a family not known to me - right place & time- appropriate cMs. (Includes descendants of remote ancestors & relatives)
For the moment I'm leaving it as "unknown son of...."
The grandfather hadn't stayed to help raise her- there are no matches whatsoever to his not uncommon name.
However-again-I've lots of matches with 2 other families (including great great aunts etc) . (I looked for who kept showing up- where might they connect ?)
CMs lower counts of course - but jump at me from trees where a) both prospective candidates are ancestors and b) when grandchildren marry.
Is it possible (probable? ) that im on the right track ?
    .

I had my daughter tested because her Dad is adopted. He is not involved in this endeavor. I entered her dad's adoptive family as far back as I could. I'm glad I did because she is related to her dad's adoptive mother's mother's side. I'd suspicioned a familial adoption and this has confirmed it. An great uncle of hers has said he knows nothing about such a thing. We hope to have him tested, if he will of course. She has lots of matches but other than the few that confirmed the relationship, the rest are a mystery (excluding the ones she shares with me).

First cousins share a set (2) of grandparents, not one as Crista states here. Second cousins share a set (2) of great grandparents and so on. Half first cousins are cousins who share only one grandparent, etc. This is important to understand when figuring out DNA connections of half siblings, or why cousin DNA cM numbers are lower than expected.

At age 52 I found out I was adopted when I took an Ancestry DNA test for ethnicity and then noticed I had no cousin matches that had familiar family names. A few weeks later a "close family" match popped up and after emailing we think we are half sisters. Her dad is now being tested so we can verify him as my biological dad. No luck on my maternal side yet but there are 3rd & 4th cousin matches that I am trying to figure out for clues. The father has very little memory of who he thinks my mother may be and she had never told him about me.

A family story comes true (at least mostly). We were supposed to have a relative that rode with poncho Ville and died in Mexico. I had no name for him so no idea who to look for. Then Ancestry added Mexican data and up pops my missing distant cousin! He did die in Mexico (death information gave his parents name and location which I did know - McNeely in St Louis MO. No confirmation if he did ride with Villa. Then someone got ahold of me as when she did her DNA a lot of Irish showed up and a match with me! Her family story was that one of her great(s) grandmother was stolen off by someone - had a child. As far as her family knew they had all lived and died in Mexico until emigrating to New Mexico. So a lovely DNA surprise. Thomas McNeely must have had a child in Mexico!

I should really make that spreadsheet of cousin names it would be helpful though on my dad’s side I have 1st cousins 1x removed that are also 3rd cousins 1 removed depending which side of my dad’s tree you go up (one of his mother’s sisters married the son of his paternal grandmother’s 1st cousins), one of the cousins shows as a 2nd cousin DNA match while his brother shows as my 3rd cousin DNA match. Would it make more sense to drop their last name in the 2nd cousin column since the closer relationship is 2nd than 3rd?

I appreciate that not everyone has linked their Trees to their account, but if they have not and they have a common last name, I find it virtually impossible to find their Tree. It would help to have a better way of zeroing in on a person's Tree.

In Texas ala 1948 my records were sealed and it is almost impossible to have the unsealed without a gob on cash. AT 70 years of life I have tried various things to find any information about my 'blood' family... to no avail. The DNA test is on the verge of completion. After a lifetime of disappointment it is hard not to be cynical, but we shall see what happens. I have no idea what my biological parents names are so I will put father & mother biological as you say and hope.

Hello. Lately I had my dna test done with ancestry. I am adopted and after 6 years of hard work and research, I had found my mothers identity. Even though she was adopted too, I managed to find her parenst identity as well. That allowed me to build my family tree on my mothers side. I had also found who my alleged biological father was and tested with is children. The test was negative. So by taking the test with Ancestry, and having built my mother s side of the tree, I hoped that a clue would pop up with the dna match and that s just what happened. A secound cousin matched appeared and looking at her tree, her grand-mother s name was the same name as cousins of my mother...It was most probably on my unknown father s side.I went further in my research and quickly found out that my mothers cousins were indeed linked to this Ancestry second cousin of mine. By making the countdown starting with a common great great father with this Ancestry second cousin, I had to come to the conclusion that one of five bothers, cousins of my mother, is my biological father. I called 4 out of 5 and all of them were relunctant to help or confirm, saying that this was all to far in time...I m thinking about contacting their children, eventually in fall...any recommendation?

Hello I found my brothers biological son that he did not know he had with a girlfriend he had when he was 17. He now has two daughters They all welcomed the new addition and the two girls were delighted to have a brother. Ok so now one of the daughters has been contacted by someone that connects to her and the son but not to me. So I said the girl has to be connected thru the sons mothers line. Do you think that is right? Every time I say that my niece says ‘I’m not related to his mother’ any idea how I can explain it to her? If you think I could be right?

I’m 80 years old. 40 years ago I spent a couple of years researching my ancestry on paper and about 4 years ago my daughter and I worked together to put it on ancestry.com. This Christmas she gave me a DNA kit just for fun! It turned out not so much fun! After about a month a close family match and I decided we were half sisters. I had my older sister and my younger sister ( we were 5 girls) tested. They are both half sisters to me also! The family tree is right for them and my new found half sister’s tree is right for her. But now how do I make a tree. It is hard for me to delete the father who loved and raised me. I have nieces from my one sister who died. And my youngest sister died in an auto accident in 1965 without a family. I’m hoping the niece will take the test to see if I have a full sister.

You can keep your father on your family tree AND add your biological father, as well. On your profile, go into EDIT | Edit Relationship and click Add Father. If your DNA results are attached to your tree, you will want to make your biological father the "preferred" so that is what shows up to your DNA matches. But, that way you keep all the information about the father you knew and loved and the family history your have worked to put together.

It is best to have that kind of attitude to lower expectations. If bio family wanted to contact you, I wouldn't shut them out. They are related by blood...maybe you'll need them for bone marrow in the future! :D In all seriousness, it doesn't hurt to meet someone who reached out and if they're good people you'll probably have a bond that will improve your life and friendships. Befriending people who are biological relatives is great for friendship as long as you aren't looking to date them!

Thanks, this is so helpful. I am new to this so have a lot to learn. My mother (no longer living) was adopted. I have a tree with me and my dna attached to me. Should I list my mom as “adoptee” and her parents as “biological mother/father”? How much info should I put on my mothers profile? I know her birthdate/death date.. Also, I have original birth certificate and actual adoption paperwork but through exhaustive search have not been able to verify / confirm any of its information. I never knew I had another child out there, she's 16 years old, and me and her mother don't remember having relations . Although we both were in the same area 16 years ago and have mutual friends , is there any possibility she could be one of my siblings that i don't know about child? I still have yet to find out who my real father is so could she be an unknown siblings child or is it a dead bang case of her being mine with that amount of DNA shared?

Is there a way you can distinguish which side families belong on? I have a list for my mother in law who was adopted. There are no matches closer then a 3rd cousin who has no tree. I don’t know what side is what. Been working on it for over a year and I have no clue.

    • @AncestryUS
      @AncestryUS  4 года назад

For adoptees, unless you have some non-identifying information that was provided with the adoption paperwork, you often do not know whether the matches you are working are from the maternal side or paternal side until you get the family trees built down to the generation of the potential birth parents.
So, for example, you have a 3rd cousin match and using the Shared Matches you are able to figure out which set of that match's great-great-grandparents are also your mother-in-law's great-great-grandparents. The next step is to do genealogy research to identify all of their children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren. One of those great-grandchildren is the likely birth parent.

The search button on DNA only searches the ancestors (direct lineage, not collateral) of the person who took the DNA test in the tree to which the DNA is attached. So, if the tree isn't attached to the DNA or the surname is not in their direct lineage, results will not be returned.

    • @AncestryUS
      @AncestryUS  7 лет назад +1

Mirror trees are not the most effective way to discover connections between you and your DNA matches. They take A LOT of work, often lead to incorrect conclusions, and wreak havoc with our systems. I solve adoption and other NPE cases every single day and have yet to build a mirror tree or connect and disconnect the DNA from the tree to another tree.

Cluster your shared matches together. Start with the top match and look at Shared Matches with that person. That is one cluster. Find the next person on the list that wasn't part of that cluster and do the same. And so on. Now, find out where those clusters intersect. If you have identified a common set of ancestors for cluster #1, for example, did any of their children marry a child of the common set of ancestors from cluster #2?

I posted my DNA late December, I’m in the UK 🇬🇧 and I’m not sure 🤔 how many people in the UK have taken the test, it seems like it is becoming more popular here but I don’t think it is as popular yet, as it is in the USA and Canada, here’s hoping lots of folk got kits for Christmas. I was fostered in Staffordshire, England in 1960 to my biological Uncle and his wife, ( his sister was my bio mother, white, English) who couldn’t have any children together..... but as far as I’m concerned, they were my Mum and Dad. They have both passed now. I’m looking for siblings and although I know my bio Fathers first and last name and his Fathers first and last name, he lives in The Punjab, in India 🇮🇳 so I’m expecting my search to be a bit more difficult. Will I need the Worldwide package to try to find him, I know he was deported from England shortly after I was born in 1960 and I know he has children with his wife in India and I know 1 of his sons ( my half brother) died in the uprising at the Sikh temple in Amritsar.
I also got the DNA kit for my partner, our son (19) and my partners Grandmother, who is Jewish, I’m expecting our sons DNA 🧬 to be really interesting. Thanks for posting these vids, because Iv only just started on my family tree journey, I’m finding it a tad difficult to understand but I’m sure with your help in these vids I’ll work it out fingers crossed 🤞 thanks again👍🏽🙋🏽

I was able to get more info off my mum about my dad and took an Ancestry DNA test. Took his side back many generations (to 1600s!) on many lines and connected them to cousin matches. Process of elimination gave me my mums mum as we knew her name but no more, and using one of the matches in 'Common Ancestors' locked in my maternal grandmothers family and again took it back to 1600s on many lines connecting with cousin matches. However, my mums mum is still unknown, and the only unknown within about 5 or 6 generations on either side. Should I approach it like you did in this video? And should I get my mum DNA tested too?
