Love watching D Boon live, floating around the stage defying gravity with his mass. Also Mike sucking on his lower lip in concentration. These guys were one of a kind!
Thank you so much for reacting to Minutemen. It was great to watch you enjoy a song from one of my favorite albums of my youth. There are so many amazing songs on Double Nickels on the Dime that it was hard to pick one. So I picked the longest for you. If this made your playlist, I expect you’ll like the album.
A couple of notes:
You probably have heard a Minutemen song before and just didn’t realize it. Another song from this album, “Corona,” was the theme song for the MTV show and movies “Jackass.”
Also, Minutemen disbanded after D. Boon’s death at age 27, but a fan, ed fROMOHIO, convinced bassist Mike Watt and drummer George Hurley to form a new band with him called fIREHOSE.

Man, great suggestion! I haven't heard the Minutemen in forever, and have forgotten just how mighty they are. Their brevity is only surpassed by their musical talent. Crisp instrumentation, suspended chords and an angular funk attack make this my favorite Minutemen song. During the reaction the length of the song was mentioned, and was kind of implied as a negative (although not really emphasized). I would humbly disagree; I think this song's length is nearly perfect for what the band was trying to convey. Again, that's just my opinion. Enjoyed that you dug into the song and the lyrics and the instrumentation. Keep up the great work!
The guitarsound is trebly to make room for the bass and drums. A band as a democratic unit. with equal parts and roles. Probably their most punk-aspect. They had ideas coming out of them from everywhere. So much more than just a good band. Read all about their masterpiece in Mchael Fournier's 33 1/3 book about Double Nickels.
Love that you're listening to the Minutemen. Highly recommend trying the album Double Nickels on the Dime if this song landed for anyone. This band is hugely important to the formation of the American indie scene in the early 80s. "This band could be your life."
One of my favorites by the great Minutemen! Should definitely react to Firehose-“Brave Captain”. After the tragic passing of D. Boon, Mike Watt and the drummer recruited a new singer to form fireHOSE. The Minutemen were a nice punk fusion band: some jazz, funk, folk-they can be described as almost proto-post-punk lol
I was surprised by this tune, I always thought this band was more hardcore punk like Black Flag or Minor Threat. This song sounded like Gang of Four to me.
Early songs were more hardcore. But they evolved their music quickly in their short time. Punk to them meant they could play whatever they wanted.
I wonder if this band had ever listened to the album Wire by Pink Flag.
Yes, Mike Watt cites Wire as an influence.
Not just an influence. He cites them as fundamentally affecting their approach to song writing.
Mike Watt guested on the 500 Podcast with Josh Adam Myers and talked for an hour about how important Pink Flag was to them.
Watt recorded an album as the band FITTED with Graham Lee from Wire. fIREHOSE (Watt's band right after Minutemen) covered Mannequin. Watt and Denis definitely looked up to Wire a LOT.
They call their style "Econo" get in get out keep it short and to the point. Econo also refers to the Ford Econoline van that many bands used to tour.
