- We're out for a drive and stumbled upon this 1938 Chevy that looks like it's in really good shape. We pulled into the yard and knocked on the door and asked if it was for sale. The gentleman said it could be... 😏

I have bought a lot of cars in my life and this car is worth 9 all day long!
It's a 1938 Chevrolet Master 2Dr Sedan. You can tell the difference between the Master and the Master Deluxe by the tail lights. The Master has only one tail light while the Master Deluxe has two tail lights. The battery is under the passenger seat. My mother use to have the 1938 Chevrolet Master Deluxe. She had that car for about 3 years then bought a 1953 Chevrolet Deluxe 4Dr 8 passenger Tin Woodie Wagon. Brings back good memories.
Everyone saying Chad should have given more money to help the rest are complaining about the phone number now you got the phone number won't you call the old man and donate to him ❤
But did he actually BUY the car?
I could write a book on the vehicle. I will try to be brief. My dad who was a Colonel in the RCOC (army, munitions) bought a 1938 navy Chevy deluxe EXACTLY like this new in in 1938. When he was sent overseas in WWII he taught my mom to drive it. I had not been hatched at that time. Mom hated driving. My dad was horribly wounded in the London blitz and was sent home to convalesce. I soon came along and we kept the vehicle until 1950. I used to sit on dad’s lap and he would let me steer. Hence my addiction to driving, and yes I still own a Chevy, but not that one of course. In my teenage years dad confessed to me that I was conceived in that car. I was suitably disgusted. I noticed the Nova Scotia plates. We lived in Halifax during the war. I have pimplegooses…what are the chances that is our old family conception car? BTW…mom hated driving but had to for family and medical reasons. Once she forgot to set the handbrake and the car ran me down! I went between the wheels and ended up muddy but unhurt. We teased her about that forever. Yes, old cars do have a special odour. So do GM cars from the 80s with velvet interiors. Sorry for the length. What a blast from the past!
Definitely worth the 9. Car in that condition is going to be harder to find.
Absolutely love this guy. Priceless. Chad and him just seem to have a great chemistry. Love the car 👍😀
Looks to me the old man is asking a fair price for this car ,love these road trips, thanks for sharing
Its a much better, more honest deal than a 3000 mile flight for a car that disappointed you. Great camera work and pleasant negotiating👍
Personally I think your offer was straight! It’s well worth 9k…leave it alone and drive it! I think it’s worth 12 to 15k!
Buy it then
Very nice '38 sedan! I would buy it.
Nice old car , just 1 year older than me (1939). good luck, from Quebec, Canada
I think you should give him 10k he could obviously use the money and it's definitely worth it!! Easy for me to say tho right?😉
Man im 72 years old and was brought up around and family dealerships and auto marine the chevy was worth every penny on 10k that would be a fair number for both parties. Good luck to you both !!!!
If the car checks good at the Mechanic shop, give the man the 10K; you can play with the car for a year and then you sell it! 🤷♂️
Down here in the US, you'd be lucky to get this for less than $15k USD. Maybe more since everyone thinks there stuff is gold. Its a sellers market around me! Its great someones kept this old Chevy in great shape!
I would estimate its worth between 14 -- 18k , more in some markets up to 23k
I learned to drive in my Grandad's 4-door black 1938 Chevy. Loved the memories this video brought back. Thanks for sharing...
I had a 39 chev 2dr sedan with a slant back and spare tire when I was in high school 1959 and boy did this bring back memories
That is a steal of a deal for $9,000 for an antique like that! Think of it this way: how much is a one-ton diesel duelly loaded?
How much is a new pickup? How much is a new Chev full size sedan or SUV? And most of us could not even fix one of those three new ones because of computers, too many wires, too complicated. So i would have thought that car is worth all of $15,000. Hats off to people like that gentleman who have maintained these rare cars up to now.
That is a nice car. If the chassis and underbody are good , then I say it is well worth the asking price. Deals like that vanished in Ontario a long time ago. Thanks for taking us along. these road trips are always fun.
Wishing your son a quick and full recovery Chad.
Because he’s young he’ll heal up fine.
Chad, I'm sort of surprised you didn't grab it up at 9k. That condition is selling 11k to 13,5 all original.
Wow, so cool. I love seeing the old cars. Beautiful historical machinery. Give the guy what he needs for it. Don't low ball. Like you said "you don't find many 1930's anymore".
Any make/model of a 1938 in this condition and price are hard to find. I hope you buy it, I would! 😉
That dog is so happy looking, hope it lives a long life.
My dad had a 1937 Chev that was identical except for the grill and the Chev medallion on the trunk. We went 50 mph for 400 miles one way to the Black Hills in 1949 with no breakdown out and back. Any faster than 50 would make the engine sound like it was working too hard. 1930s cars were the first good cars. The trunk was small but the legroom in the back seat was enormous so that's where most of our luggage for a family of 6 was kept. In the occasional bitter cold sometimes felt in winter when the engine might not start with the starter my dad would use a crank that got it going every time!
Your a good man chad you lifted the old guy's spirits when he was talking depression over his ex-wife that tramped out luv the old Chevy just like money in the bank parked in your garage
Been a car guy and mechanic 45+ years. So. Calif. Born n raised, retired now at 64 living in Asia. had old friend from 1980's him and 1 son had a pair of 1939 Chevys. Only thing he paints black or did, like no one else, looked like glass. Mohair interiors just being Hispanic they put 560 small tires and old spinner caps. That 38 in Calif at least, would be going for well over $20,000 or higher, just because it's original and in great shape as is $9,000-$10,000 in my opinion is a steal of a deal!! Especially since it's from up north without massive rust!!!
This is great seeing you out and about looking at an old car in Nova Scotia .
I'm surprised you didn't look at the body mounts first thing, Chad.😊
You would think he would.
He should have had you guys with him, then he would have known. Good thing you wrote it on here
😂
Enjoyed watch this do more check out , floor board good frame good , motor good runs , cost p a int it !!! ???
Chad, the old man needs to be your shop helper. Bet he has some great stories!
A little bit of that high speed chicken feed and he'll fit right in
Even with all its faults its still a solid old car . Weather its for chad or not though . It is a tempting old gal . It does start up and run . Well Jolene 🎉 dont know if hes going for it or not ,! It got some issues but its all fixable . Thumbs-up Jolene great content ! Go team Hiltz go !
Looks great to me! Love the body style. The old man has done a lot of work on it!
Gentleman's ask is a pretty fair price. Even with all the flaws. Way better price than the vehicle you picked up in Barrie, Ontario.
What a beautiful piece of machinery what a work of art Love the grill
Did everyone notice when Chad was waxing philosophical about old cars, their price and this one in particular...the camera wandered to have a good look at Fina’s happy face? She was listening, but I think she may have been concentrating more on the possibility of seeing a farm dog or something else fascinating... like a cow. You never know.
Fina is smiling glad to go on a road trip....she is such a good dog.:-[🏁🏁 without seeing in person I think it is worth 9k. No one likes to be low balled.....
Give him $10k and make his day. He has more than $9k in it. The old guy has hit a rough patch in his life. Clearly, he's genuine and honest. Do him a good turn and receive good in return.
$6,822.00 US dollars = $9,000.00 Canadian which is a fair price IMO [well, you asked] 👍
That is a great point. Since I was thinking $9k "American", I certainly wouldn't have ANY problem snapping this one up for $6800 in USD. And as somebody else mentioned, I'd give the gent $10k CDN ($7582 USD) just for the goodwill. Unless, of course, the "gent" was always talking in US dollars. 😁
That bad boy is worth 10k US easily. 9k Canadian is a steal. Nice old car.
Right on I agree
Absolutely can't do better when u break it down like that.
That Chev would be worth at least $20K in Australia. $9K is probably a bit too much if you want a base for one of your projects but it would (IMO) be a good investment to just put into storage after fixing the few small issues it does have.
Seems a fair deal to me, probably not much profit there if it was to be flipped. All the chrome and grill looked in great shape, that's alone is probably a good chunk of the asking, think I would go for it!
You are right if your keeping it for your self and keep it for another 5-10 year's the price will go up.
I paid $2,500 for my 1947 Chevy Coupe it doubled in price 14 year's from when I bought it plus I've put some money into it like disc breaks new tires and wheels, 250 engine 350 transmission auto nothing mechanical is original the body, and wheels looks stock.
Are you kidding? Here in the States, you have these so called 'classic' car dealers that sprang up over the last 10 years or so. They just LOOK for cars like this which they get for cheap. They have their own shop and make it look good for a couple thousand and then try to sell it for like 25K to 30K! They've taken all the fun out of little guys like me who like to search for old cars and pay a fair price and trade them off every so often.
@@retroguy9494 my Pop's was doing that in the late 70s early 80s buying old car's fix them up and resale them to collage student's or someone that just needed transportation to get to work. He would buy little 1967-70 Toyota's and Datsun's for $50-100 buck's or American's car very cheap some time's even free just to get a none running car out of there drive way. Now it would be impossible for me to do what my Pop's and older brother did back then for older classics. I had many classic back in the 80s and 90s I still have two classics a 1947 Chevy Coupe and a 1965 Chevy panel. There still out there but not for the same prices they sold them before. There are people that will sale there classic to the right person that will enjoy there car/truck like they once did. Happy hunting for classic car's and truck's 😉
That's a awesome car in really good shape for being here in Canada. those old stovebolt six engines are die hard they will run forever. What a great time capsule a car that should be left alone and kept stock in my opinion. I would love to find me a car like that or older to have as a weekend cruiser.
Old cars like that have a wonderful smell that I wish would come across on video!
The price is very fair, I don't think you will find another like it.
It’s a good looking car, two door sedans from that era are now very popular , restored or rodded.
its a good deal front end all fixed, new tires, lots of new parts! runs and drives!
thanks for taking us car shopping with you.
Make sure you check the body mounts
LOL
Old guys always have a story to tell... even if you don't want to hear it.
Knock Knock Knock, I’m Bad Chad, I see your car-it’s for sale? No worries-just gonna chop her into a masterpiece, but even though you seemed to be pretty honest, I’m wanting to look her over and hear it run since I am finished taking folk’s word. 😂🤣😂 This fellow seems like an awesome dude-got a lot of gas left in his tank, so to speak, and tells it like it is!
What you offered was an insult...plane and simple...it's a driver in that shape...
It's worth all 9k but do you want it or not. I suppose thats the real question. Decent car for a 38.
jolene should have edited out the guys number. Now he will be getting calls forever
Sad but true
A little Body work, Paint, Small Block Chev.,dual exhaust, rake it in the front, Upholstery, You've got a Very Nice Ride. I remember one in high school. Mighty nice!
Very cool old car 🔥 Thanks for sharing :)
Thanks for being so respectful of this older gentleman.
you should buy it and give him the 12 he needs for it
Chad and jolene you wouldn't get a car like that for that condition and price in the UK. That's what you call a good buy ..it would probably cost twice as much in the UK..keep up the great work the both of you 👏 👍
Hi Fina !
This older guy is such a gem, honest as the day is long ! Great old boy.
Make sure it has body mounts
Road trip finds can be fun to look at. Wait a while Chad for this one. Jolene's camera work is excellent.
IF Chad buys it for $9K Canadian the seller is coming down $1,400 Canadian from his original price plus he is tossing in the $200 floormat SO maybe $9,200 Canadian would be the fairer price.
That's a nice car. This is like fishing, catching a trophy and letting it go. Catch and release! Those cars are still sitting around out there, there's hope yet!
Give him $12k !! He needs the $ ! & He is a great man !!!! Make His Day !!!
@@pauleggert4639love it mate I would do the same. 👏👏
Oh Man!!! I learned how to drive in a '38 Chevy just like this. What a flashback.
I hate it for the old man. That's hard to go through at his age. He just needs lots of prayers. I think if you buy it you'll give him a fair price
nice old car
Just said a prayer for Chads son!
And Fina does a cameo appearance ❤ cool!
I could tell by how that man said, "Close the hood for me!" and fired it up and popped into gear with the same confidence I do with my antique. That car is a runner that needs a little TLC motor wise. If you drop the top on that car and give it a nice paint job, it would sell in a heartbeat to someone who wanted to get greasy and do the mechanical work and make a trip to an upholstery shop and they got a nice car show car to play with.
Great video thank you very well done.
Nice car , looks to be a good honest Chevy , not been made to look what it isn't, just in a natural state for a car that getting on for 90 years old . I think it would be best to do a comparison with something from that era 🤔
The guy is selling the car to pay bills on the old homestead . He doesn't want to sell it , has to . I would pay the 10,000 . It's in better shape than the one you bought in Ontario . Great Video , lots of love from Saint John , N.B.
I hope it has body mounts!🤣
Wow! Beautiful car!
My first car was a 38 Chev. It was 4 door. I was 16 in 1962 and bought it for $15! I fixed it up a bit replace a bad head gasket and sold it for $150, 3 months later. I notice this one has a straight front axle mine had what they called Knee Action suspension didn't care that was bit bouncy.
I own a 1953 Buick Skylark road master convertible with all original stainless trim and spoke rims the body is flawless the Interior is red leather with white piping trim the top is black with a tan head liner all chrome is flawless. The car is a "TROPHY WINNER" took #1 place in the GRAND LAMONT show. Let me tell you a story... This guy comes out of on where and wants to buy my car for $80.000 dollars? And I said Thank you very much for the offer but I have over "ONE MILLION IN TO THIS! and guess what he bought the car! FOR ONE MILLION!
Wow I remember as a kid riding with my grandpa in his 38 chev and him teaching me to drive . Great times back then
Go for it.
Looks Better than the one He Drove home from Ontario 😅😊
Chad. Nice find. I'm a big time fan of yours and Jolene and really like your vision on the builds you do. Was wondering if you also do cars for customers?
Good bones & relatively rust free original runner.
9k seems fair plus you can tell it's breakin his heart to sell it.
Now that the ol' girl is up on RUclips the offers are coming.
It'll be gone soon.
Chad made a big mistake letting that phone # leak out if he wanted that car. We'll find out tomorrow whether they made it back in time!
@@oldscout80
Yup, I'm betting they went back...
Make shore it's bolted to the chassis to the body...😂😂😂😂
Sure
If you buy it, please don't chop it!! Original all the way, these are so hard to find in this condition. A wonderful beautiful car
Spend the money! Save the Chevy!
That’s a fine lookin car Chad!
The seller is a true blue honest man.
You’d be helping him in a great way if you buy it.
Cheers
Finding a rare car like this is a miracle. Just agree a price and take it home. 1938
Nice car, Same age as me, 85 and looks real good..
Nice find! Can’t wait to see what you do with it.
Probably destroying the original car
Just a suggestion You probably should have edited Out or censored that gentlemen's phone number
Remember some of those beauties from the magazines back in the day. Fantastic, thankings for sharing your visit.
38 chevy hell to the yes" ❤ That one will be sold by the time you get turned around to go back after it, been worth dropping a deposit down on that beauty.
You 2 are awesome I know you will do the right thing which ever way that is
Make sure you look at the body mounts
OLD CHAD MAKING A NOTHER ENEMIE..
I would say 9000 is very fair I have restored a few cars. And exactly like you said, just try to paint a car I have a 62 MGA in the paint shop right now with sandblasting and a nice paint job. I’m looking at 8000 plus.I have a 27 Buick master that’s just a few months from the paint shop and we’re looking at 15 thousand plus just in paint. And with this car, a good buffing would be good enough for me. Keep up the good work I don’t miss an episode. cars are my passion they don’t make them like that anymore.
Awesome, Thanks
Likely a better deal then that $25,000 disaster you bought.
Wow buy it please buy it so cool can't find anything like that in Australia paint it ship it to Australia get 50 to 100thousand after your awsome custom or 50 as it sit wow so lucky and what a nice bloke at least you know your money's going to a good person
Wow !
Worth seeing !!! 😂👍🏻
Chad...may I give you helpful advice. Keep a pair of drive on car ramps and a piece of old carpet in your truck or car. You just might come upon another car sitting along side the road. Also a good
flashlight for looking under car. This is good advice and as many cars lately you have bought this
will become very handy. Best to you.
That car runs from anywhere between 25K to up I've seen 94K. Well worth the money.
The 38 Chev is my next favourite Chev after the 46-48 Chev. I had a 38 Chev ute back in the early 80s.
🤣

Not many all steel body, all original 38 Chevies are left . She’s a good one . The frames on these are old , riveted, and often have rust damage. A solid original frame would be a find just as the body and fenders is. The car is all there, obviously. Parts exist and what’s on it and in the trunk will last awhile. Just know you are looking at a very old 6 volt car which was assembled years and years ago. It’s an antique , first and foremost . Original parts still exist on shelves in parts stores.
