"The Present Political Divide: What To Do Now"
George Lakoff, Professor of Cognitive Science and Linguistic and Director of the Center for the Neural Mind & Society, UC Berkeley
How does Trump think, how does he control public discourse, and why does he have the appeal that he has? What do the Democrats fail to understand about Trump and his followers? And what can those in the American majority that oppose Trump do now, and what should the majority and the media not do that would only help Trump?
Banatao Auditorium, Sutardja Dai Hall
Sponsored by Center for Right-Wing Studies, UC Berkeley
Co-sponsored by the Department of Sociology, Linguistics Department and Berkeley Center for Neural Mind & Society, UC Berkeley
Dr. Lakoff has a message that every progressive, every person who cares about their children, their families, their communities, and their country needs to hear, because we have been all wrong about how we are going about trying to bring our message to the conservatives and those who vote against their best interests. He explains it, and gives us tools if we will pay attention and use what he teaches.
Very interesting
nothing is perfect, but it's good to hear different voices, it's sign of getting progress of human society.
Descriptive and also prescriptive :-)
i am disappointed that George adopts the simplistic capitaliam vs. socialism frame for discussing economic systems....and he comes out favoring capitalism....George, listen to Richard Wolff among others...you certainly know of him, he draws huge crowds when he comes to the Bay Area ...you are wrong on this one
I thought Prof. Lakoff was a smart guy, but this was a disappointment. His framing of "strict father" conservatism is so lacking in nuance, I suspect he wrote diagrammed it in crayon. Stick to linguistics, George.
