A little late but thanks for your sentiments. Clearly we stopped doing youtube altogether. But this iconic thinkpad inspired us to continue onto careers in programming and data science. A little too busy for more videos but we do have footage of a quad core T520 that we never got around to posting. We felt that it was a decent progression from this frankenpad if someone needed newer specs but retained some old thinpad traits. We might post it some day. Thanks for dropping by.
Still use one (T60) 2020. Although the CPU that I have (T7600) can take a 64-bit OS, I run Win7, 32bit and Office 2003. Only 3 of 4Gb of RAM is usable due to the chipset limit. But with an SSD on board it works well. Wish I had a brighter display though. But indoors in the evenings it's fine. I don't think I'll upgrade mine any more. I'll just keep it as an historic piece. I also have its smaller brother, the X60 and a T420, a T430 and the E520 to play with. I'm sad that the 1900x1200 screens shrank to 1080 on today's laptops. Even the 10.5 " screen on my Samsung Galaxy TAB S from 2014 has 2560x1600 resolution!
@@northof-62 I have a T60 as my main computer, and an LED backlight kit is a must in my opinion. It makes the difference between a screen that is just about usable in a dim room and a screen that is perfectly fine even outdoor in sunshine.
I just bought an R61 from 2008. I dont know why. Its big, heavy, and some might call it ugly, but I love it! Now I'm going to upgrade the CPU on this fossil so that its performance is on par with my cheapo 2014 netbook. lol.
Thumbs up! I just updated my T61 to Windows 7 64 bits (8 Gb memory), I also have a bootable drive with Ubuntu. I run Oracle virtualbox with Oracle Database (enterprise and weblogic server inside the virtual box. This is an amazing laptop which I still use as a backup to my Thinkpad W-520. Thank you for the review.
First time im seeing this in 2020. You guys shouldve continued this channel. The review and video was perfectly done. I also have a T61p in a T60 chassis just for the ibm logo
Yes! The T60p UXGA Frankenpad is a great machine. Give it the buttons and the trackpad of the T43p, a matte Retina screen and modernized components, then it would be a real killer laptop. (Comment typed on a T43p UXGA, SATA Mod, with classic NMB keyboard *without* Windows Keys).
+lophiomys If it weren't for the aging hardware in the T43p (for my needs), I think I would also be using it as my daily driver. I absolutely agree that simply modernizing either the T60p or T43p would be enough for me to buy it in a heartbeat.
+TunaTechCo I have both a T42p 15" with a 1600x1200 IPS screen (Runs Windows 10 great!) and a magnificent T60p (1650x1050) that are a couple of my favorite Thinkies.
Very nice and thorough review of an IBM work-hose that will never die. I have a T61, the wide screen version, with a flavour of bsd on it and it's always my first choice when coding because it's such an awesome laptop
I remember looking at various IBM laptops during the years, but other companies mimicked them and desktops got so popular and the industry exploded with so many models and I experienced most in computer school and work anyway. In 2017 I felt for buying a T430 that I saw in a shop window and the quality and easy repair/upgrade options was a very positive experience. I consider a T60/T61 for a bit of DOS/text/vintage stuff. Just to rebuild a good one from eBay parts would be interesting.
gosh that aspect ratio is beautiful. only hoping that we would get that ratio again in the future. laptop nowadays are design to consume entertainment, which i dont really understand why Lenovo decide to do that with its Thinkpad line. baffling.
Frankenpads are rare and expensive because of of the screens are roughly $300-400 each now days D: then there is all the work to make it work. Speed wise the T60/T61 still hold their own and very capable plus the audio quality is much better than modern laptops. Screen is reinforced with a magnesium frame just like the lower body so there is no worry with the screen getting destroyed unlike modern laptops. Get thinkpad fan control for those who do a lot of work or live in a climate where the laptop gets rather hot. QXGA 2048x1536 IPS (LED)
I have a T400 and just picked up an X220. While these are later generation machines, they both seem to work well. I've upgraded the T400 to 8gb of ram, which is probably the max for it, (as it is for the T61). The X220 already has 8gb of ram, but I think it will go to 16 (probably would cost me around $100 for that). The T400 now has a SSD, and I'm debating on what to do in that department for the X220. Choices are replacing the 320gb hd with a similarly sized 2.5" SSD, adding a 64-128gb mSata boot drive, and keeping the 320, or go with a 500gb mSata and ditch the 320gb. The latter choice would probably save power and extend battery time.
i love this laptop i got mine thinkpad t61p since 2007 and still works i use all day all night best laptops ever and i got a macbook pro 15 from 2015 i still like my thinkpad best
I have a t420 and I love it. I owned 600 series laptops from IBM, it was an epic device. The t420 really is no exception. I've owned the T430 and while the t420 is just a 2nd gen Sandy Bridge i5, performance using the t420 recovery media is nothing short of amazing. Sure, it's a tank. But isn't that part of the classic experience? I would argue easily these are just as fast, if not faster than many low end celerons while offering so much more then one of these low end jobs.
I own the T60, and I maxed out almost everything (T7600 CPU, 3GB RAM, SXGA IPS display, 120GB SSD). I would throw in a T61 motherboard, but finding the correct motherboard that wasn't affected by the Nvidia GPU defect is hard. Most T61 were widescreen, and the GPU defect makes it even worse. But the T60 is still a very useable machine. Web browsing and HD RUclips work just fine on it.
This video convinced me to try Thinkpads, especially the 4:3 aspect ratio ones. Also, the Thinkpad T25 Anniversary edition is a bit of disappointment. Also, I sent a PM. Thanks! =)
+3xilelast While we were using the 14 inch prior to making the Frankenpad, we noted that it was a very comfortable size where it incorporates the nice tank-like feeling but also with a small enough footprint. I remember saying that if we weren't doing this 15" Frankenpad project, I would be really satisfied with just using the 14" version. Best of luck on your purchase!
+Thomas Champigny We are actually working on a x230 with this frankenpad for a new video. Something along the lines of egpu comparison. We are only two students so it will take longer to release a video than other youtube personalities!
Hey, for your FrankenPad, did you use the NMB keyboard? I heard they were the best. NMB has blue domes! EDIT: I also love the keyboard sound. It *really* does sound mechanical!
You say that yours has LED backlight, did you upgrade the display panel because that was never a standard feature in the T60? The parts are out there to do it but I'm just wondering if your is modded with it. Nice video!
See, that is funny. I got for Christmas a Thinkpad E550 which it surprised me by good. Nice playing some modern games on it... Yet there I am, still using my Frankenpad as main computer anyway, haha. I just like to work on it so much more! I just didn' t dare to go with the Nvidia board, I know it tends to self destruct, so I had to go for the Intel. In any case it is less of a pain to use with Linux
see reddit author:szmy8 you can swap correct corresponding t60 to t61 models entire bottom chassis or just the t60 monitors and hinges. you can reflow bake the t61 mobo in the oven 7 minutes 325 preheat 250 first. 7 minutes open door let rest n cool, remove re tape the black zones you peeled off. if the monitor dosnt boot up but you get a power light led on re assembly you need to power cycle the power button and right mouse button until the monitor posts to bios. if you have power led no monitor, cant cycle boot with right click, strip it and try to bake it again better, strip more, more even heat, correct temps, try boot n click till bios posts. hf gl

Cool video. I love my T60. 9 years old and still going strong.
same my thinkpad T60 has a T2400, 3GB of RAM, and a 32GB SSD, and it runs cloud ready, currently using it to type right now
My 12 years old T60 still works just fine. It has a Core2 Duo T7200, 4GB RAM (3GB usable), Mobility Radeon X1400 and 14.1" 1400x1050 screen.
I currently use a fleet of thinkpad X60t, X60, Z60m and T60p. it's great to know that someone love the thinkpad 60 series as much as me
Great machine, still using my T60 every day (and I made a video about it as well).
ThinkPad can't age I still use my T43 just in case if there are no application for Linux for my main PC

Excellent Video.
My daily driver ? T61.
A dependable friend for my digital tasks.
Beautiful presenter, beautiful delivery, beautiful laptop. What more can you ask for? Very well done.
The T60p/T61 UXGA Frankenpad is the single best laptop out there. Still got one of these, a true classic. Awesome review btw, keep it up.
Nice video, have been using and building the T601f frankenpad for many years

Lenovo screwed up really lately.
Loved this review! I hope this channel has more in store for us :)

Have both a modded T61 wide with the Middleton BIOS, 8 gig, '08 CPU and SATA II SSD and a W500. Love the screen height.

Awesome video, love for thinkpads persists
really liked it. More Thinkpad content
Great video! I must say I wish current ThinkPads should not have 16x9. They should at least have a 16x10
What a great first video, liked
excellent rundown. now I want one :)

Kudos!!! :DDDD
TrackPoint, not ThinkPoint. But awesome video. I love these series, and have about 8 of them.
+Atli Jarl Martin You are absolutely right. We stand corrected.
Very nice review! Very informative.
I might be getting a T60 14 inch with centrino duo Windows XP on it.

Add the Middleton Bios modification so that we can run an SSD at SATA 2.
The T43p UXGA and T60p UXGA series is best ever Thinkpad made it
I am still using x40/41 which are truly irreplaceable classic IBM machines.
nice video, i start custom my W500 right after see this video!
*and start hunting T61P also :)
Thanks for the review, it was really informative. I've been hunting for a new Thinkpad. Would you ever consider reviewing the t420 or the x220?
+Thomas Champigny We are actually working on a x230 with this frankenpad for a new video. Something along the lines of egpu comparison. We are only two students so it will take longer to release a video than other youtube personalities!
Guess you will put the X220 KB in the x230, and maybe try to put one of the HD IPS screens from the X240-260 in there as well.
Hey, for your FrankenPad, did you use the NMB keyboard? I heard they were the best. NMB has blue domes!
EDIT: I also love the keyboard sound. It *really* does sound mechanical!
Where did you get your CrystalDiskMark scores at 6:35? These laptops can only do SATA II which is 300 MB/s on a good day.
You are totally correct. We enabled Samsung's magician turbo mode to enable caching in memory. It definitely adds some speed to the day to day use.
Nice review! Work more on your camera focus.
watching this on a T601F, X9000 & W500-heatsink
is there a palmrest without a cutout for a touchpad?
not too shaby , anyone recommend me to buy? Someone wants to sell it for 90$ , second hand but still in good condition.
You say that yours has LED backlight, did you upgrade the display panel because that was never a standard feature in the T60? The parts are out there to do it but I'm just wondering if your is modded with it. Nice video!
+Pete B T60 was not sold with LED backlight, so it has to be one of the modded screens. Normally the T60/T61 all had CCFL backlight.
+IThinkAbout43 Right, yes I agree.
thankyopu very much
Isn't it simpler to simply take the entire screen and lid assembly of a FlexView T60p and slap it on a 15 inch T61 with it's screen removed?
They did not make 15" 4:3 T61's, only 15" Widescreen models were made.

Screen uses ccfl tubes to led's
ThinkPoint? TrackPoint?
SSD SATA3 Read 1335MB/s and Write 1474 MB/s.... I don`t think so...
