Inspiring run from Ron Clarke. Incredibly under rated performance only matched by his top 10 finish in the 1964 Olympic marathon, after going out at sub 2:08 pace. Honorable mention fellow Australian Derek Clayton's 7th place. Pure guts award goes to New Zealand's Mike Ryan for the bronze in marathon.
Despite having spent time in Switzerland to train for high altitude conditions before the Mexico City Olympic Games, Ron Clarke was overwhelmed by the altitude and blistering pace of the East Africans and finished the race in a state of near unconsciousness.
The rest of his life he had heart issues , this race literally killed him and destroyed his track career "The Gold Coast City Council confirmed the death, giving the cause as kidney failure. He had also been treated for heart disease after sustaining permanent heart damage in the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City...... At the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, Clarke collapsed and nearly died from altitude sickness sustained during the gruelling 10,000 m race final. Despite training in the Alps to get acclimatised to high altitudes at Mexico City, this could not put him on par with many opponents from Africa, who had always run at high altitude (with the notable exception of 5,000 m gold medalist and 10,000 m bronze medalist Mohammed Gammoudi of Tunisia, who was born and lived not far above sea level). Clarke finished in sixth place,[1] but remembered nothing of the last lap. (www.nytimes.com/2015/06/18/sports/ron-clarke-australian-runner-known-for-world-records-dies-at-78.html)
Buena y aceptable carrera de Juanito Martinez en cuarto lugar, que a la deriva ha sido el mejor mexicano en fondo en juegos olimpicos.

Surprisingly, this is the only time so far that a Kenyan athlete has won the Men's 10000m at the Olympics.
Kenya has also won Olympic gold only once, runner John Ngugi in Seoul in 1988 in the men's 5000 meter run.
The commentator got the winner wrong. It wasnt Keino but Naftali Temu.
GEEESH!
bear1568 no..he said Temu not Keino. Commentator had it correct.
They played a MLB game tonight in Mexico City.
16-11 with 11 home runs.
It was almost as big of a farce as was this race.
The person calling this reminds me of an excited David Frost, immediately after Muhammad Ali knocked out George Foreman in 1974.
