You did offer food for thought, thank you for that. One thing that struck me was your sense that Shafak spoke about too many things at once. Whereas I, who found '10 minutes...' a poignatly moving tale from beginning to end, thought that all threads of her narrative were magnificently woven around the power of friendship, bridging many of our gaps .
I was not very happy with the ending. Plus I wanted to know the mystery behinde those dolls kept in that car in which laila was murdered. Otherwise, I liked the whole story, the way she incorporated history and communists movement.
It was a great book but reading about sabotage that he secretly loved leila was heartbreaking...and also when Nalan is sitting at the balcony and she thinks that the whole sea from her view looks like leila...... plus leila when she is swimming in the sea, it's also like PLEASE LEILA DON'T DIE, lol xD..
The guys who were assigned the task to bring leila to richman son(who was gay and was constantly being forced by his dad to be with woman) killed leila , just out of hatered for call girls in general n they felt it as an act of cleaning up society ,seriall killers they were
@@AyeshaSyed thankx for an honest opnion n review , I liked all parts of the book but kind of felt something didnt add n yes u're ryt that she spoke about so many things
A very good review, Ms. Shafak gave many sweaping statemnts although those statements conveyed the proper meaning but in-fact they're not the logical statements. However, how she raised the issues of voiceless is undoubtly a great effort.
I just completed this book and its awesome and I love Leila's beautiful thought " just because you think its safe here doesn't mean this is the right place for you"
It was the two men that worked for the gay man's father that kept trying to set him up with sex workers in hopes of teaching him how to be with a woman. These two men killed her and the other three women because they believed they were cleansing Istanbul of "filth"
I'm confused who's layla's father? If harun is the father then why she calls him uncle? (I guess harun has 2 wives binnaz and suzan) why doesn't Layla call binnaz step mother instead of auntie?????? (SOMEONE ANSWER ME PLEASE 🥺)
If I remember correctly, I think there was an explanation of sorts in the very beginning of the novel. Something along the lines of, human body/mind being able to think before completely shutting down. So the protagonist had 10 minutes and 38 seconds before she became brain dead to have flashbacks of her entire life. No secret message.

Thank you for commenting.
I think the dolls were the representation of the ladies murdered by those people.
Just finished the book, and i have been thinking the same though its utterly sad and emotionally exhausting
@@yashchowdhary4534 yeah it was a sad story. But the concept is great. Generally, I like happy endings.
Great job....very well explained

The guys who were assigned the task to bring leila to richman son(who was gay and was constantly being forced by his dad to be with woman) killed leila , just out of hatered for call girls in general n they felt it as an act of cleaning up society ,seriall killers they were

Elif shafak the apologist writer.

Great job girl 🙏🏾
Can someone plz explain me who killed leila and what was their purpose? It was so unclear and keeping it that unclear was what I didn’t like.

Could there be any secret message behind the title of the novel? I mean why 10 min. 38 sec? What's your thought on this?
