How Ukrainian refugees in Poland are coping a year on from the war - BBC Newsnight

  • Two sisters are stuck in the middle of the Ukrainian war and regularly say goodbye at Warsaw train station in Poland.
According to the UN, when the war began 9.6 million Ukrainians fled across the border to Poland. Roughly 2 million are still there.
That means one in seventeen people living in Poland is a Ukrainian refugee. Many are naturally reluctant to put down roots, but Poland has granted them the right to work, to attend school and to receive social benefits.
The schools are straining, with some children being remote schooled from Ukraine by choice. Speaking to refugees, most are keen to work if they can and have filled gaps in the workforce, but they long for home.
Newsnight’s Kirsty Wark reports from Warsaw.

Just wanted to share one story with you. I am Polish myself. once I was travelling in the train from Krakow to Wroclaw. The train was full of Ukrainian refugees since it was from the station at the border. I met in the train one lady with a child around 12 years old and a guinea pig. I asked them if they know where they are going. They didn't. It was their first time outside Ukraine, they didn't have anyone in Poland. They kept asking me what they should do. if they should go further to the West. I couldn't answer them. I just gave them my phone number in case they needed help. They called me after two days and told me they don't know what to do. I immediately called my family. My family welcomed them with open hands, they live with us for a year now, they are celebrating with us, they became part of our family. Just a random meeting in the train but it was destiny. BTW that kid is calling me sister now :D

I've always liked Poland and used to work with a couple of Poles - awesome people, but still I didn't expect such overwhelming support and humanity when the invasion started. I remember watching a video by a Polish blogger in the first weeks of the invasion, sharing her feelings, crying and having _survivor's guilt_ because of what was happening to _us_ , as if it was her own personal tragedy. Back then, when so many people in Western Europe were still insisting that we were all being "too emotional" , "overreacting" and called on just "waiting a little until it's over", Poles were the only ones who understood the scale of the horror we had to go through, and the importance of resistance.
Luckily, I didn't have to leave Ukraine, but I'm still incredibly grateful to all Poles for saving the lives of my people. We'll never forget that unprecedented, unconditional support. ❤❤❤

Poland is simply to small to handle that amount of people especially in such a small time window hence why the Mayor of Warsaw, Rafał Trzaskowski, appealed to the EU and UN for support to provide accommodation to at least some of those Ukrainians. Ukrainians had been coming to Poland for decades from all over Ukraine to work very hard in all sort of jobs in order to support themselves and their families in their homeland. Contributing to Poland's development, as they did in various countries across Europe and in America. They are well liked and valued and - after all - they are so closely related to Poles and their history is similar to that of Poles. And the pain and hurt they experienced in their past from the side of Russian Empire, Soviet Union, and now Russian Federation, is very similar to Poland's experiences. Surely, there had been dark chapters in Polish-Ukrainian relations, Poles didn't always treat them well and there had been innocent blood spilled on both sides, but seeing what is happening to them now, overrides any resentments in the vast majority of Polish people. When Poles see what Ukrainians are going through, we identify with them very strongly, and can't imagine standing aside and not doing anything to help. I hope the world will increase its aid and military support to Ukraine to help it to victory, and that Poland's and Ukraine's mutual relations will always bee good from now on.

I think we do understand each other very well. We're trying to provide some living conditions for the Ukrainians, but on the other hand we know, that they are not here of their free will. They miss home. They have their dignity and often it is embarrassing for them to ask for help. It's a difficult situation.
Anyways, we all know You will win this war for Yourself and for us. Then You'll decide whether to go home or stay here with us. But if You'll leave, promise to pay us a visit some day :)

    They are very good BBC.
We don’t send them to Rwanda, like you do in Great Britain. We house refugees in our own worm houses, not in overcrowded accommodations, without any support! PS how’s the Brexit going?
