- Earl Strickland vs Corey Deuel from the 2002 US Open 9-Ball Championship.
It was the defending US Open 9-Ball Champion vs the reigning World 9-Ball Champion. Deuel had beaten Strickland, on his way to the title in 2001. This was Strickland’s chance to avenge that loss.
Billy Incardona and Jim Wych were the commentators for this one.

This is just sensational. Thank you accu-stats. Great commentary, great opponents, great venue. I'm so glad you caught this on film.
Would love to see more early 2000’s pool!!!! Thanks again for these amazing videos
CHECK OUT THE 80'S WHEN EARL WAS IN HIS 20'S JUST ENTERING TELEVISED TOURNAMENTS!!!!
Earl's interviews are actually super fun.
If he won😮😅
1 of the Best Matches I've ever seen..keep em coming Accu Stats..Thanks Again!!
This is one the most well produced pool games I’ve ever watched. Bravo.
Earl playing is a thing of beauty.
amazing player....such a shame that he is such an @$$
@@christopher480 not as bad as Mike segal
@@christopher480 I've seen just a few matches with The Pearl recent years, but I think he controls his temper very well since a couple of years. I don't mind him blowing off steam as long as he doesn't disturb his opponent when they are shootin. We need colour in the game, not only technical prowess without soul.
@@christopher480 he is a good guy. He is just Impulse, and he is the best 9 ball player of all time. No question
Love Earl's pace of play. Great blend of taking enough time to visualize shot and where cue ends up and being in primo position for next ball.
I've picked up my pace in practices and am loving the results. No rushing, no taking forever, happy medium...HAPPY PLAYER HERE !!
WHO WANTS NEXT ???
I just love watching things that were recorded on Film, before digital cameras were common. Film just looks so much better.
its on enhanced video during the conversion
I freakin love this match!! Exciting and woah some great shots! Deuel went hard. Thanks Accu-Stats for all these awesome moments in pool history.
Never have seen a better game than this one!! What a match!!
Earl is poetry in motion......
Earl is the best nine ball player ever in my view. That's saying a lot. So much compassion and love of the game of billiards. Never be another "Pearl". TJ
agree...did the most for 9ball
The magician is the topdig Earl is a very good #2
@@arikaragiannisEfren better at 8ball and 3 ball cushions and overall billards player, but for some reason stricklands just the best 9 ball. Their head to head kinda says that too
These remasters LOOK FANTASTIC. They have AI VHS remaster software and man does it look good.
Thanks Pat! Loved the interview at the end.
Corey looks like 90210 and Melrose Place had a baby
The last safety that Earl played. Showed experience and control under pressure. They gave us a spectacle!
Accu-Stats never disappoint,great match
Great match ! Thank you.
Now I await that super-duper match between
CJ WILEY and MIZERAK at the Sands back
in the early 90s - please!
That CJ Wiley dude is cool to, has a RUclips channel I think as well, yeah its rad seeing these older is well older by today's standards anyways hah seeing like a not peak prime but still at near his best Strickland here, prime Corey Duel, other rad players like Rodney Morris,
Gotta love Earl matches! He's always a show, win or lose. No one else in pool has ever played the victim as well as him.
The John McEnroe of Pool
playing the victim?
Even when he wins!
Rudolf Wanderone a.k.a. "Minnesota Fats"
As a spectator and fan, it’s my intention to give Earl Strickland a moment of “very kind thanks” for playing quickly in every match. The future will fall kindly on Earl, like a straight shot on the nine.
Prime earl was the most entertaining player I’ve ever watched and most talented . When he was truly on his game , earl was awfully hard to beat
@@teddyhaynes9876 maybe impossible to beat.. It really was all up to him in most matches.
When Earl was on he was pretty unbeatable. His cue ball control is pretty amazing. (It’s funny because I think Corey Deuel looks like the guy on “Beverly Hills 90210.”)
I was thinking APA player but yeah I see Beverly HIlls 90210 as well.
He's really Kaiser Soze in disguise.
Absolutely hilarious when Earl had his head in his lap and hands over his ears like a bomb was going off near the end lol
Matches like this could hook anyone on pool. Amazing!
What a great match!
1:02:47 Not a foul at all, the cue ball and object ball were touching so you can hit right through it. It's amazing to me how many don't understand that rule, especially someone commenting on the game at such a high level
In 2002 this was a big controversy in that you can’t hit somthing you are frozen too you can only push it. Basic physics. In about the same time BCA said if it is frozen it’s not a foul and that’s the rule that has been around for so long but it was not in the BCA book in 2002.
You can hit through them but not the way he did it, he would have needed to hit it through the middle or on top with a level even stroke. The way he hit it was a push shot. You can see how it reacted, it pushed though the ball forward then slowed down due to the backspin, no way it can do that unless the tip pushed the ball forward.
love listening to earl comment at the end
An excellent, nerve-wracking match.
Billy was wrong about the shot at 1:02:40 being a push foul because the balls are frozen, so a double hit doesn't occur the way Corey hits it. If there was even the slightest gap between the balls it would have been a foul, but as it is, Scott Smith was right not to call it.
You are 100% correct. I'm very surprised Billy didn't realize that, after all of his years of playing/commentating.
well, actually, the rule back then was that its a foul even when balls frozen. I forgot about when they changed that
1:43:47 i wonder what the over under was in the building for Earl to play safe in that situation lol
1:04:13 when my wife asks how some woman’s lipstick got on my collar
Earl said" if I miss, you cheated"
The John McEnroe of Pool
Not exactly. I turned up volume. Earl said at 1:14:32, "I missed, you cheated." It was a double hit by Deuel.
If the ref can't call it, the player should man-up himself, regardless of the stage of the tournament.
@@MahlonEdwards John McEnroe never blamed his opponents. He blamed the line umpires. There's a difference.
I literally saw the final today
Love all rhe people who don't understand Earl's perfectly placed psychological gunshots. The man knew exactly how to win.
We do understand, that’s why we hate it.
2002 the year of the aluminum diamond tread sheet...
102:48 that's definitely not a foul. I'm surprised incardona doesn't understand the shot better than this considering his background.
its faul
Had to be a foul, as the cue ball went forward with extreme backspin. Foul.
Wych always has to make a derogatory remark about Earl's mental difficulties.
Leave the old pearl alone I say. Love watching Strickland matches and what accessories he brings to the table
How can you not love Earl? He’s my favorite player because of his personality.
Because it's relevant to the match
He’s not wrong though
IMO Wych is a most of all a cliché cannon. It's almost like he is reading from a proverb lexicon. He does know the game but doesn't let it show much between all the clichés and irrelevant silliness. All my personal opinion tho, and what do I know?😁
I seem to remember a video of Earl playing Corey in the late 1990's. It may have been in Milwaukee. It was definitely in a bar/pool room. Earl quit the match because Corey was soft breaking. Does anyone know if the video still exists? I have not been able to find it again.
There’s one of duel vs svb with that kinda issue, not sure about earl
You are correct. It was a pro tour tournament.
In the final, Earl broke down his stick and walked out on Cory,
giving Cory his first
Pro tour Win.
Who is the referee?
I think there was an inside bet between Wych and Incardona as to who could work in a golf analogy somehow first. But "long forearms"? Really Wych?
I love the way of breaking
This table was rolling off to the left and that screwed Corey over like 4 times
Deuel..a throwback to using your wits to get over the wit-less...and Earl who never wanted anything else in life but winning and playing pool
With another banger
At 1:02:39 they were frozen so it’s ok to follow the cue ball right ?
Great match
Billy: ".800" is world-class speed. Yeah, those days are gone...
Not really, just remove the decimal….800 IS Considered world class speed in Fargo.
@@owendavies5023 Yep, but he is talking about TPA, not Fargo. I doubt Fargo even existed at the time of this recording. You probably already know this. Just pointing it out in case others are not aware. A player who averages .800 TPA probably equates to ... ? maybe 725 Fargo? I have no way to determine that though and the 725 is a pure guess. It is an interesting question.
What round is this in the tournament? Anybody? Nobody knows? Still winner's side?
Sardo went out of business. Those gasket racks they use today are a joke
*What a Match!*
I don't know which was hotter the match itself or the referee... 🔥
Look up englands snooker ref
Ummm... I'm going to go ahead and assume you're joking. 😳
@@WallyVedder Michaela tabb is hot dude...
@@scurvy3113 That's not Michaela Tabb
Agreed. .... For an even hotter referee (namely, female), check out some SVB matches from the 2022 World Pool Championship. The referee I mention might also be in one of the woman vs. man matches of the 2022 World Pool Championship, which can be entertaining.
corey making some insane shots in the 11th rack. 2 kicked in balls and a frozen ball bank. pretty sure that wasn't a foul since you can hit into a ball when it's frozen. it looks like a double hit but it isn't if it's frozen.
yea that's exactly what I was thinking, they were frozen so its not a foul
Awesome player's
FYI pool lovers: The announcer who stated "11 racks in a row at CJ Wiley's disbanded Tour was wrong.
The offer was $1 mill for 10, not 11. Earl broke and ran 11 because the match race was to 11 per normal. I was there.
the insurance company backing the bet refused to pay; Earl settled years later minus, I'm sure, serious legal fees.
@1:39:48 why did the tournament director approach Corey during the last game? A little later goes and talks to the tournament director, and the tournament director goes and talks to Earl. There was no need for that. I wouldn't be surprised if this was rigged to win on some bets that were placed. In the game Corey made an unusually bad choice and misses. And he left Earl an easy shot.
Scott Smith usually likes to give respect to the players when it goes hill hill by announcing it to the crowd. (Looked like he had a mic in his hand) and was possibly asking both players if they wanted him to announce to the crowd that it was hill hill. Earls reaction to being approached by Scott seemed relatively annoyed which led to Scott walking away minus an announcement. I’ve seen him do this in a lot of important matches on here, but this is just an assumption
Early asked the tournament director to come over and clarify.
Especially when playing with Effren!
Hardly anyone beat Earl but he beat himself many times
Great action 👏🏾
Efren Reyes is the GOAT IMO, Francisco Bustamonte is my second favorite player. Makayla Tabb is my favorite referee.
I can’t stand listening to Billy- He won’t shut up. Does he want it to be all about him ?
He'd have no teeth left in Florida
Get the announcers words off the pool table so we can see the game.
When it's 8-6 duel....if you Crack a egg on Earle head, it would start to cook! 😆 🤣 😂
Corey playing very good
If he double hit that 7 the cue wouldn't have caught english like it did after the hit. 100% a good hit.
Nowhere in the same league as earl not even the same galaxy.
The balls were touching…. no foul.
What match
Earl is one of the best pool players of all time, when he keeps his temper under control. Unfortunately sometimes....
whats the difference about temper. mike siegel talks and talks and talks on purpose to annoy his opponents. pisses opponents off and destroys their focus. playing those mind games. At least if Earl gets mad, it is genuine.
@@PostUp_Time I read where Earl Strickland suffers from bi-polar depression. That could account
for the explosions. Also, like John McEnroe in tennis. These kind of guys amp up the emotion when they need a jolt of adrenaline.
1:02:45 Foul or No Foul?
No foul if cueball was frozen to the seven?
1:17:02 goodness me that was a n amazing escape there 🥵
One of the best shots I have ever seen
Is Deuel even on Tour anymore?
Reminds me of top tennis players losing points, dropping down to challengers
in front of 6 fans then vanishing like Chicago Mob "trunk music."
I’m shocked no pro has ever punched Earl in the face.
Came close during 1996 Color of Money match against Efren. Efren was close to slamming his cue over Earls head but was discouraged by his entourage.
@@JohnS-il1dr Earl backs down from no one. He gets upset at his own play, so what? Who complains when McEnroe in tennis cries?
@@scottisitoro3953Perfect comparison to McEnroe. Both of them showed a lack of class with their whining.
Damn fine match.
Like Buddy Hall says he’s looking for a ear man 😆 lol
This match deserved better commentators.
For Jim’s first commentary with Billy, he learned in a
hurry he would have to fight hard to get a
word in. As usual Bill
uses thirty words when three would
suffice.
Seems Billy just meeting Wych. Billy as the primary commentator, doesn't give Wych much of a chance to raise his voice crescendo style as the audience applauds in order to inject "excitement" ... he does a few times . .
Be interesting to see if Dr. Dave has analyzed Deuel's punch shot on the married balls
How was Corey’s bank shot on the 8 in game 11 a foul?
It was a bank on the 7 ball. Anyway, it was not a foul. The reason it wasn't a foul is because they were frozen together. When they're frozen together the two balls effectively act as one single ball. When you strike the first ball, BOTH of the two balls move away from the cue tip at the same time as if they are one and the first ball never comes back in contact with the cue tip. It is not a double hit nor is it a push shot. It's effectively the same as hitting a single ball.
@@nahog99what about in apa does that apply?
@@richardmg9903 yep. If the two balls are frozen together you’re allowed to shoot straight at the first ball. There will not be a double hit assuming you stoke the ball normally as you would any other shot.
1:04:04
It wasn't a foul shot. There was no double hit and the cue ball did not follow the same trajectory of the object ball because it was a draw shot via a jacked up masse.
Dont be a joker here thank you
I know it’s just an expression, but pool balls don’t have an outer layer of paint
2 Gunslingers Head-to-Head; everyone expected a great match and boy did they deliver. Yosemite Earl by a nose!
Are these 2 commentators old butt buddies with Earl? They just compliment him ALL the time. 😂
1:02:47 I have to say billy is wrong by saying that’s a foul. The way Corey strikes the ball is in a downward stroke. By hitting it in that angle he’s not “pushing” the cue hitting the object ball twice. That’s basically what that rule is hitting or pushing the object ball through using the cue ball.
Wow great match to watch. Awesome how Corey kicked those two balls in a row plus the long two rail kick. I don't think he fouled on the 5 since the balls looked frozen and he jacked up with draw. Too bad someone had to lose.
When the balls are touching and the. He goes forward with the object ball like it did. (Not from top spin) then it’s a foul. That was a clear double hit and you can see the cue ball move from the cue hit
@@kevinwillen4178 Totally agree, especially when you see it in slo-mo.
Earl had every right at 1:14:32 to say to Deuel, "I missed, you cheated."
This color guy is the greatest commentator ever. 🙄🤡
I always thought that Sardo was an unsightly piece of machinery for a pool table... And now I can't stand those magic racks. I have one at home and you're better off with a triangle
Those pockets are small from the center as elephants are. Earl lives in a dream world. I've met him a few times. He thought he'd dominate when they removed center pockets, and Appleton smashed him on that table. He's a narcissist, which probably lets him play beyond his talent.
PATRICK FLEMING
is the best........
Earl is such a bad sport it’s sickening. At one point in the match Strickland says “you cheer when I miss” and then later in Earl shoots a Hail Mary flyer hit and hope, gets very lucky to hook Corey, and then pumps his fist in celebration 🤦🏾♂️ Deuel definitely has way more class than Earl.
1:04:10 clearly not a foul
Who taught Deuel how to chalk a stick? Isn't the screw completely opposite of what is taught?
That was definitely a foul on the 7....the cue ball went forward big time.
Pool has a play-by-play (PBP) guy and a color guy, like football. What’s interesting: both of these announcers are knowledgeable pool players and they obviously both must be players. Usually the PBP guy knows a lot less than this guy.
Corey’s baggy ass dated clothing cracks me up. Limp Bizcut in the house.
Saying to the other guy. Earl is shooting the 2 ball now Billy etc.
These announcers were laughing at Earl's comments to Deuel.
Check out Strickland's face, hardly amused.
I don't know at what point in this match did Deuel do something fishy.
They were talking about Deuel's frozen ball shot. It was close of either a foul(double kiss) or a legit shot.
THE MIGHTY EARL!!!!!
At 1:14:32, I turned volume up to max. I was correct. Earl said clearly to Deuel, "I missed, YOU CHEATED."
SAME THING i HEARD.
Earl the Pearl in the house!
59:18 and 1:00:40 aaand 1:16:50 just amazing
🔥💯
