This is how I learned to sleep a yoyo back in the day. I'm guessing most of them were responsive then.
I actually think learning that first step is one of the hardest to comprehend for new players if they don't have someone to actually teach them. It doesn't make initial sense that dropping the string as you throw will cause it to sleep when there being loose tension is what causes it to return.
Nothing hurts worse than throwing a powerful sleeper that doesnt sleep. Ouch.

It may just be moving fast. Or it is just the sound an unresponsive yo-yo makes.
For a shutter it makes a lot of noise
Usually a little thin yoyo lube will quiet it down.
Nothing worse than when you throw hard and it immediately comes back up and smacks your arm really hard💀
