This production really is brilliant beyond description. Iain is a gentleman interviewer, resulting in a story as much about the ship as the conversations with ppl. Iain just being himself is perfect. More of this would be great, don’t change a single thing.
What an absolute pleasure to see and hear the story of a piece of living history. To see Iain reliving the experience and the obvious elation is an absolute joy to behold.
Hello Alex, Many Thanks for the kind words. It is always nice to be remembered positively. No Steam Recips for me this year. After a Winter with PNTL, I am back to Wartsila Medium Speeds on the 'Marella Discovery'. Stay well, Tim
Aye, I went ‘Doon the Water’ a few times back in the 60s with my mum and dad. Remember going down to the engine room and being fascinated by the engines. Obviously made an impression as I became a mechanical engineer. Happy memories. Great video.
I remember being mesmerised by Waverley's massive pistons and the power behind them when I was very young as she sailed from Campbeltown. What a lovely surprise to see this video!
As a fan of Iain’s automotive content, I wondered if I should bother with this one …but it was just as fabulous as the best of the four-wheeled classic episodes - absolutely fascinating and inspirational. Well done Iain, The Waverley also made this middle-aged man very happy. A++
My dear father was Glaswegian and, although living in Northern Ireland for all my young life, we visited family in Glasgow every holiday for years. I remember vividly going 'doon the watter' with my father on Waverley nearly 60 years ago and, to be honest, this video brought distant memories back to me and a tear to my eye. Iain - I enjoy your Workshop videos immensely (particularly those with Harry) but I beg you to do more of this type of content. Amazing stuff.
Iain, as a Yank with Scot heritage I enjoyed this video. The steam engine is a functional work of art & the solid wood, copper & brass appointments are absolutely beautiful--& you did a good job with "It's a Wonderful World". :)
My wife and I were on holiday in New Orleans and we were recognised as being Scottish by our accents. We were then immediately asked about the Waverley. We went on the Natchez on the Mississippi and they have a section dedicated to the Waverley. We were amazed. A lot of people in NOLA know about her. Fabulous video.
Iain Thank you for being inspired by Harry Metcalf in taking up the chalice and starting your own channel. May you be supported by your Elves and bring more historical and informative content.
Absolutely I’ve watched the usual younger Utube car guys, they all know how to recognise the cars but not so much the engineering or History. Don’t get me wrong the better of these younger ones I enjoy namely Shmee150 and seen through glass but and it’s a huge leap I enjoy Harry’s and Iain’s clips even more. As I’ve said on other post I’m the least mechanical minded person in any room but can follow. Just something about the two like a bit more class just shines through with the level of knowledge. I could listen to both Iain and Harry for hours.
I always loved steamers being a Boilerman in the US Navy, I rode the Waverly from Glassgow to Danoon in '83 and spent little time above deck, what a wonderfull work of art!
That was bloody brilliant, Iain. I have to say that I was not aware of the Waverley, I will try to catch up with her on one of her tours. I really enjoyed those interviews with the significant folks, and all that history is amazing. Also, she can get a shift on, can't she? And to end on a bit of Tyrrell crooning is the cherry on top.
This isn't something I was ever expecting on your channel Iain but I'm so glad you shared it with us. I spend a lot of time googling stuff just like this and I really worry how much longer this sort of experience will still be available to us. A very thorough video as usual. I'm a strong believer that the old way is still the best way. Effortless steam power is just magnificent in every way. Thanks again Iain 🫡
THAT was a real treat, Iain. Thank you. Like you, trips on the PS Waverley were part of my childhood too. 1977 as an eleven year old was the first time for me, but I never got the opportunity to take the helm. Can’t wait to introduce my wife to her on a wee sail soon the water!
Yet another wonderful video on my favorite RUclips channel (alongside Harry’s Garage) 😊 Thanks for all the joy, insights and inspiration you are spreading! A bit further north-east on lake Mjoesa in Norway there’s another paddle steamer, the Skibladner aka the White Swan of Mjoesa, still in operation and has been for more than 160 years. Your video brought back sunny childhood summer memories as I spent my younger years in one of the Skibladner’s port cities, Lillehammer, during the 60s. Thank you 🙏🏽
Being born in Ardrishaig 63 yrs ago the Waverley and all steamers were / are a huge part of life . Taken on board at five by my mechanic Late Dad and then taking my daughter at five , what a pleasure Brilliant video for anyone who’s never been to 🏴 well done You steered very well for me “ middle aged “ 😂😂😂
I was luck enough to take a trip on Waverly when it visited Hastings on the South Coast of England about 40 years ago. It left a lasting impression inspired a lifelong passion for all things engineering. Wonderful to see how it has survived to go on and inspire generations to come. A vital part of our heritage and cultural history, in a Britain that is losing way somewhat of late. Thanks for sharing.
Takes me back to my childhood, when a trip doon the watter on the waverley was an annual event. Seeing the engines again, the distinctive smell and noise of the engine room came back to me. We always boarded at the broomielaw.
Damn Iain, all due accolades have already been written so I will bring up a less obvious point. Do you now carry a professional video crew with you? The quality of this piece is truly excellent. Two cameras work during the interview, real pro drone footage, excellent editing work, this all helps carry the message to new heights. Congrats to you and all those who helped make this story come to life
I am a retired marine engineer who obtained my tickets first in steam and later in motor. I have sailed on many a steamer with steam turbines and recip engines as auxiliary engines in my time along with modern motor engines. My preference by far is steam and I had the privilege years ago when the Waverley came to Plymouth Devon of taking passage in, I must admit inclement weather conditions from Plymouth to Torquay and we were bussed back to Plymouth. As a marine engineer it was fantastic to see the engine in motion and my only regret was that I was unable to get a tour of the engine room. I remember being in the stern having a beer in the bar whilst in Plymouth and was so surprised to see the portholes go under water as we hit the rough weather, quite and experience, the whole trip. I would love to see her return to Plymouth again. A most splendid treasure which should be forever preserved.
Well, that was a bit special, Iain. The Waverly is certainly a wonderful slice of living marine history, and a testament to all those involved in her preservation. "Thanks For The Memories."
I saw this beautiful ship in Whitstable a few years ago. The wonderful sound of the paddles and the steam engine were like nothing I have ever heard before. Quite a turn of speed as it drew out of the harbour!
The Old Girl used to sail from Ayr of a summer evening out and round Holy Isle off the coast of Arran. This trip was run by West sound radio and was fondly known as the 'booze cruise' and rightly so.I was on many of those, great times.
The engine is an absolute marvel. Thank you Ian for sharing this with us. Your joy and interest in the people and the stories is contagious. Great job. Great production also.
What a fascinating video. My living room and bedroom windows look straight out at the River Clyde and I often wake up and see the Waverley sailing past. She travels at a fair speed! Great work Iain Absolutely fascinating.
i remember going on the waverly years ago , when my son was little, enjoyed every second of it, i think we spent most of our time looking at the engine.. it was brilliant..
I watch your video's as they come out and have enjoyed the restoration of various motoring exotica. This though touched me profoundly as I too as a bairn went "Doon the Watter" frae the Broomielaw with my family. 50 years later my wife and I were walking from our boat down a pontoon in the Orwell on Englands East coast when I heard a distinctive beat on the water coming up from the sea. Without turning to look I knew it was Waverley, said so to my wife, and we both turned to look downstream and there she was in the twilight coming upriver, magical. Thank you.
I first saw the Waverley at Dover when I was a ship’s steward on the cross channel ferries - same year as I witnessed the last of the hovercraft service. Had the pleasure of heading down the watter to Rothesay and spent a good proportion of the trip gazing at that lovely engine. My grandfather was a first engineer in the merchant navy in WW2 - mostly in steam ships, though I doubt his engine room was as as elegant and light as the Waverley’s. You always remember an encounter or even a glimpse of this special ship ❤
amazing, i get some fond memories of my own Skibladner (1856 lake paddle-steamer, triple expansion steam engine as well, on freshwater) when i look at this wonderful paddle-steamer and the enthusiasm connected to it 😀
“Good for the soul.” Indeed! Iain and the cinematography drawl you into the ambience of Scotland. Fantastic! How about a traveling show with Iain and Europe’s mechanical history!?!
Finally! The PS Waverley getting the location it deserves! I did some work last Winter helping varnish the benches, and I can't wait until this Winter to work on her again!
It's good to see you on the Waverly - she's a beauty. I see her most weekends as I arrive to volunteer on the TS Queen Mary, moored 30 seconds walk from the Waverly. Sadly, the TSQM no longer has her turbines and plans are to re-engine her with diesel electrics.
Iain is a truly wonderful presenter. If a television company doesn't approach Iain to present or narrate future documentaries, they are absolutely missing a trick.
Just back from a trip around the Isle of Wight this afternoon. The Waverley really is fabulous, much quieter than a diesel powered boat and no black smoke from the funnels either. Highly recommend and thank you for putting this video out. Hopefully it has also inspired others to support this amazing ship! 👍
I’ve had the immense pleasure of sailing on the Waverley twice, one from the Thames and once on the Clyde, you can’t beat Scotland for the scenery. Many thanks Iain for the superb video, it brought back some wonderful memories.
I guess there are many fans of Iain that are seeing this vessel for the first time, having never heard of it. If you haven’t seen it, see it. Find it. Go touch it. It is magnificent.
Thanks Iain for bringing back happy memories of my Holiday playground in my youth. I was born in Helensburgh and my Grandparents lived in Craigendorran, so it was just a short walk to pierhead, Season ticket in hand. Also sailed many times on the sister ship Jeanie Deans. What a pleasant surprise. Much as I like all that 12-cylinder Italian stuff, ye cannae beat those three cylinder Scottish engines! Thanks for sharing your experience and helping to spread the word about the Waverley experience.
Thank You Tyrell ! What a treat it was to see the steamship you’ve loved since your early years . I thoroughly enjoyed the time spent with you and the different people on the steamship and especially Getting to see the inner workings of the engine and seeing it in action. Loved every bit !
I had never heard of the Waverley but now plan to go and see her when she visits London. Hopefully under Tower bridge. A wonderful video Iain and such a beautiful boat. The drone shots were breathtaking.

Well I found this video extremely interesting & very enjoyable about the last sea going paddle steamer in the world - the famous Waverley so many thanks to those who took the time to tell us all about the Waverley.
Hi Iain, this video really made me smile. I live in Bournemouth and last Sunday we visited Swanage… and low and behold docked at Swanage Pier was the Waverley. There was a huge queue of people wanting to sail on it, plus lots of enthusiasts. I haven’t seen it in our area for many years… and it looked magnificent. It had great presence and an amazing turn of speed when the paddles fully engaged. I believe it’s here for a while now offering pier to pier cruises. What a piece of history. Thanks for sharing. WOW what a wonderful story Iain! Thank you for sharing this experience. The mix of history, engineering and and culture was mesmerising. Your knowledge and expert commentary made this video prime time quality 👍
Normal service will be resumed soon back in the workshop, but we hope you enjoy this break from the norm
This was a superb video Iain. 👌
This is an absolute pleasure to be able to watch and your deep love of the vessel is apparent and the enthusiasm is infectious.
i hate change haha
MORE, MORE .
Brilliant , really enjoyed it.
thanks
Brought a tear to my eye. What a wonderful world indeed!!
Is it just me, or is a large steam engine in operation simply one of the most beautiful man-made things ever? A really lovely video. Thank you, Iain.
No, it is, I totally agree, that & a Barque or Tall Ship.
@@johnashtone7167 Fred was on the waverley. In his programme.
This production really is brilliant beyond description. Iain is a gentleman interviewer, resulting in a story as much about the ship as the conversations with ppl. Iain just being himself is perfect. More of this would be great, don’t change a single thing.
Yes you don’t need to watch television. I just watch Iain and Harry’s channels for my entertainment. It’s brilliant.
Steers the ship AND sings too. Thanks once again Ian for another enthralling episode, you are a legend :)
That was fantastic Iain and some great singing!!! Thank you so much 👏👏👏👏🥃👌🇬🇧
What an absolute pleasure to see and hear the story of a piece of living history. To see Iain reliving the experience and the obvious elation is an absolute joy to behold.
Chief Engineer Tim was the last commercial chief I sailed with. Very knowledgeable man and I’m glad to see he is still out there!
Hello Alex, Many Thanks for the kind words. It is always nice to be remembered positively. No Steam Recips for me this year. After a Winter with PNTL, I am back to Wartsila Medium Speeds on the 'Marella Discovery'.

What a glorious memorable day, Thanks Iain, for taking us along.

Absolutely one of the best videos I have ever seen. The fact that Iain was involved with a family connection is the icing on the cake.
I love videos like this, equal parts history, story telling, and appreciation of technical marvels. Great job, Iain!
Iain, as a Yank with Scot heritage I enjoyed this video. The steam engine is a functional work of art & the solid wood, copper & brass appointments are absolutely beautiful--& you did a good job with "It's a Wonderful World". :)
You are a true documentary maker. Please post more of these kind of documentaries. Well done.
The whole thing was just magical. Someone was cutting onions at around 42 minutes.

Been on there. An absolute treasure and I’m so glad it’s still sailing. A piece of history.
An absolute delight! Thank you!
Marvelous singing too.
Really enjoyed this as I went on the Waverley around 43 years ago on the Thames as a young boy on a school trip .
This is fantastic! Many thanks, 'Captain Tyrrell' for taking us along.
Thank you Iain for sharing the Waverley with us. That triple steam engine is a thing of engineering beauty.
I was on that ship in the 70s, glad to see she's still going strong.
Well done Iain for showing us the inner workings of this magnificent ship and also for the perfect finish with your wonderful singing.🏆👍😁

I was able to travel on this ship in 1996 from Glasgow to nearby islands. That is a great memory! Thank You.

At first I thought this was Iains personal yacht! what a beautiful vessel. long may she continue.
A triumph of form and function. Absolutely beautiful lines on the Waverley. Thanks Iain!

That was great. I was totally transported. Feels like I was on vacation. What a wonderful ship. And what a voice you’ve got there! Thanks!!
I saw this wonderful ship pulling up to Yarmouth Pier (IoW) less than 2 weeks ago. What a lovely video... 👍
I remember seeing the Waverley regularly here in Ilfracombe! Beautiful ship.
What a fantastic channel this is and Ian is such a genius and a gentleman
Had the pleasure a few months ago of going on the Waverley to the Thames Estuary to the wonderful Maunsell WW2 Sea forts. What a thing.
I like that they held your feet to the fire when you took the helm. That's serious business. But, what a beauty! 💙
Absolutely brilliant Iain. What a treat. You made my Friday night here in Australia.
What a fascinating video. My living room and bedroom windows look straight out at the River Clyde and I often wake up and see the Waverley sailing past. She travels at a fair speed! Great work Iain Absolutely fascinating.
I've been watching her come and go this past weekend, in Yarmouth, so the video was a real pleasure, thank you Iain.
And Iain raises the bar yet again, but this time way beyond the completions reach. Absolutely amazing Iain, many many thanks.
Wonderful. The emotions at 38:07 are magical
An absolute 5 star video production , perfect in every respect, are there no limits to Iain's talents ? - including an accomplished singer !.

Iain, the best video you have gone to date - Thank you.
Oh yes! This is Gold. Thank you very much, Iain.
I didnt know about the Waverley but its now on the list for next year, great video and bravo to all the great people who keep her running.
“Good for the soul.” Indeed!

I have seen many steam engines in operation over the years. On ships, in waterworks etc. Always magnificent pieces of engineering.
Videos like this make RUclips a wonderful place to be. Thank you lain.
A wonderful world and a wonderful video! Thank you for sharing this. It has been a "wonderful" experience for me.
I guess there are many fans of Iain that are seeing this vessel for the first time, having never heard of it.
If you haven’t seen it, see it. Find it. Go touch it.
It is magnificent.
I've always wanted to visit Scotland for the scenery and the Whisky. Now I just want to sail on the Waverley!
An all around beautiful piece of documentation. Thanks very much from Germany.
As you rightly said, the engines are "Poetry in Motion". You can now go back to the Workshop now and make more very good videos.
Grace, space & pace. Fabulous. Thanks Iain.
I thoroughly enjoyed the time spent with you and the different people on the steamship and especially
Getting to see the inner workings of the engine and seeing it in action. Loved every bit !
I had never heard of the Waverley but now plan to go and see her when she visits London. Hopefully under Tower bridge.
A wonderful video Iain and such a beautiful boat. The drone shots were breathtaking.
Thank you. I am sure you’ll enjoy it!
What a magic experience, thanks Iain. And your choice of song was perfect. I keep forgetting that you can hold a tune.
What a masterpiece of engineering a ship like this is! I take my hat off to everybody who keeps the big wheel turning (to quote CCR).
I have had the good fortune to have had several trips on Waverley down on the Thames and one in Southampton for the maiden voyage of the Queen Victoria which was brilliant following her out with whistles blasting. Love the warm hospitality and equally good hearty food. Ship , crew the whole experience is out of this world. Look forward to another trip on her again this next coming season.
Great video on the Waverley’s technology, history, and Ian singing!
Perfect documentary of engineering, memories and history.
Such a beautiful video Iain. Thank you from Wexford, Ireland
What a treat that was, a huge think you to all involved.
Lovely bit of history and beautifully presented, Tyrrell!
Fantastic Film Iain and brilliant insight to the Waverley which we love travelling on when we can, good vocals too 😎👍
Well I found this video extremely interesting & very enjoyable about the last sea going paddle steamer in the world - the famous Waverley so many thanks to those who took the time to tell us all about the Waverley.
Just a magnificent, magical video all around, so well-made and produced. Thank you, Mr. Tyrrell. 👍
I love this 45mins format👌🏻
What fun! Thanks.
And what a clever triple use of the steam. I had never heard of such efficiencies in any piston engine. Brilliant!

All the best, Steve… 👍🇬🇧
WOW what a wonderful story Iain! Thank you for sharing this experience. The mix of history, engineering and and culture was mesmerising. Your knowledge and expert commentary made this video prime time quality 👍
I took a trip on The Waverley a few years ago across the Bristol Channel. An amazing experience and it was so impressive to see that engine up close.
Simply Fantastic..!! Thank you for the Excursion..!!👍👍
