Naoto Tanaka's Megaman compositions and arrangements were really special. He could capture the essence of the original song or intended style and add just the right type and level of instrumentation for each track. The synth in Mattrex for example elevates it rangewise from X1~3's OSTs but keeps itself in a similar enough rhythm to be recognizable as a MMX piece, in addition to holding a grinding feeling which makes it convey burning the same as Horiyama did for Magma Dragoon.
You can really hear the shift in composition, especially melody-wise, when it comes to comparing Horiyama's and Tanaka's writing styles. I have a huge love for Horiyama's stuff, as his songs always tended to get stuck in my head way more, but Tanaka's tracks are incredible when it comes to suiting the atmosphere of the stages. @@skiverthekiller Usually I'm not as into Horiyama's melodies as his peers because I tend to find his instrumentation a bit muted for the established style of games he composes for. However, when he does pull out the guitar or heavy synth he legit goes hard, especially on final boss themes. Tanaka is my favorite MMX composer because I see his work as a synthesis of the SNES style established by Yamamoto and co. and the expanded instrumentation Horiyama brought in, combining the best elements of both in tracks like Mattrex, The Skiver, and Virus Stage 2. Virus Stage 1 is also an example of how much range he has, as the track is more muted but despite almost sounding relaxing it has that sense of omen with the slightly offkey piano once the bells stop.
Ah man Mattrex/Burn Dinorex's Volcano Stage. Love how the stage opens up with the sun in the background when the track starts as you teleport into the literal top of a Volcano. Gets really heated with the lava flow section at the bottom too. This song also describes a really hot, Californian summer day. Every time I step outside for work and the blazing sun bares down on me, I think of this. Sick cover man. Love the rest of your work too.
I've replayed this cover at least 50 times in the past week. Probably need an extended version! Even though this is the "burning wave" song, I really feel it encapsulates the essence of raw, unmitigated but precisely controlled speed. When I'm on the highway... with the crescendo of this song blasting, i can't just help but imagine myself putting the pedal to the metal, flooring the engine and leaving all the cruft "in the dust", not unlike how the millennium falcon escaped the 2nd death star. The other mode it really works in is driving in heavy rain. The "waves" line up with the wind shield wipers! It's like control thru the storm -- again, controlled, unstoppable speed
