An example of inconsiderate horse riders (Kennford)

  • Today I had three encounters with horse riders.
I'm always happy to slow down and in some cases stop and wait for the horses to pass me. It's not uncommon for me to switch the engine off while waiting as well.
I have in the past gone to pass a horse and rider slowly only to have the horse get jitterish and stopped the van which is why I go very slowly every single time.
I also never race around the lanes instead choosing to slow down for bends.
First encounter I got waved on by one of the women because I was going too slow.
Second encounter the stupid blonde woman/teenager (the three of them looked very young) stopped her horse right on a bend. When I've followed horse riders in the past they've gone faster to help keep the traffic flowing. Not these three. Very slow walk up the hill.
Even when we come to a spot I can pass safely I get waved at to slow down even though I'm crawling at 5mph.
Third encounter was like the first.
Every time I pass horses I accelerate slowly to eliminate the chance of wheel spins (which make noise!) and to eliminate the engine revving up (even more noise!).

That 2nd group were indeed very rude it seemed. There were several driveways to go into near the end where the houses 🏘 were and they just kept on going expecting you to wait behind them all day.

I’m also a horse rider myself and as soon as I see a car on a small road I trot this person has seriously been a legend to have the patience to wait for them is incredible

I think the second group of horses should have pulled in by the gate on the left.

I know this is really old but you did nothing wrong, I’m a horse rider myself and those people on the second encounter obviously don’t know how to ride on rides as you don’t take up the whole road, stop on a bend where no cars can see and just stay in a trot! You could have been going to, dropping children off to school so since they are going like 1mph you’re gonna be late! So you did the right thing the whole time!

I ride horses on the road and with what you did I think you done a great job of wide and slow and keeping your distance so you don’t scare the horses

Those kids need to learn some road respect and manners...very poor conduct on their part. Good on the driver for taking it slow and being safety conscious!

I feel so bad for u, I love hacking and if a large vehicle comes to me or something that can’t get past safely I either speed up or pull in straight away as it’s unfair on drivers

I ride and drive horses and ponies on the road and always pull over to let cars pass when a suitable spot comes up and always say thank you to those who slow down , stop or turn their engines off.i find if your polite to them, they will be polite back to you, many people i have seen more than once and i always say thank you we all have a right to be on the road and we should share the right equally and peacefully.

1st encounter looks fine, they asked you to slow and you did (some drivers just ignore this request, so it can appear somewhat frantic!). 2nd encounter yes i would agree they could have moved out of the way at the very beginning, let alone down the lane. 3rd encounter I don't see them waving to slow you down, i see them thanking you for your slow speed and distance! i thought you drove well around the horses, but dont take being asked to slow down so personally :D

Honestly, I really appreciate how you react when you see horses on the road. However, on the behalf of the horse riders, if they were riding a difficult horse then they can’t really do anything about going slow. I have personal experience with difficult horses, I have a pony who is scared of roads and likes to stop when he gets scared and it’s difficult to get him moving, without him reversing into the road. One time a driver wasn’t as considerate as you and my horse bolted and I fell off with permanent damage left to my arm.

Why are the roads so small? There are footpaths bigger than that where I live...

I think that when these riders hear about or have experienced life-threatening moments whilst riding on the roads, they are perhaps quite precautious if perhaps from their perspective it looks as if drivers are going faster than they actually are.
I’m sure they would be perfectly pleasant if they were aware you were only trying to be a help, which you were.
You’re such a good person to respect riders on the road like this, most people nowadays don’t abide the law, which claims you shouldn’t go fast around horses on the roadside.

I don't know if it's just where I live, but I'm going to generalize and say Americans would not slow traffic if they could pull their horses off to the side like those 3 had two chances to do. Wtf. Anyway, bless your heart for being careful and considerate. Not all drivers are, just like not all riders are, I guess, but what blows me away is that they didn't pull off to the side to let you pass. I guess all you can do is get a nice big Chevy or Ford and drive over the hedgerows and widen those insane roads yourself. We would drive over that stuff in a truck.

You did the right thing at all times, being a horse rider myself it is nice to see some people are considerate when passing horses:)
The three riders should have at least trotted on to a safe place for you to pass but maybe they did not feel safe doing so,horses can be unpredictable, I don't agree with your choice of title though as I saw all 3 cases thank you for slowing down so how are they inconsiderate?

Trotting could be dangerous to a horse's hooves on pavement, that's probably why they weren't accelerating, but honestly, I think you did the right thing.

0:22, they are waving you on to say you can come, not hurry up, they are letting you know your best to keep coming.
2:20, was it necessary for you to drive up a country road? A horse who’s recovering from an injury may not be able to trot on a road yet, hence them having to walk.
6:25, yes they could have pulled over more, you may have revved your engine a lot so they waved you to slow because they thought you were going to speed past, which fair enough, you probably weren’t.

I was delivering mail (agency work) in the area so yes, I had to drive on the country roads. Definitely no engine revving - I drive for fuel economy which means slow accelerating and I rarely use the brakes as I'm seldom going fast enough to need them - advanced driver training.

Hi I'm a horse rider myself I don't think the were inconciderit maby the horse and unable to go faster than a walk or were out for a long time and giving them a chance to catch their breath
