  • SUP Y'ALL?! Finishing up Dreamcatcher's "nightmare" series with this reaction here. I reacted to both Good Night and You and I, and boyyy did my brain go through some good mental cardio when I thought back to Fly High and Chase Me.😆 I'm so glad I decided to go on a Dreamcatcher journey to InSomnia, seriously. The 5 songs I've heard from them alone are just WONDERFULLY different and beautifully executed overall (vocals, rap lines, visuals, lyricism, concept). I talked a LOT in this video, my bad...😛 I would love for y'all to share what y'all think about Dreamcatcher's "nightmare" series, if y'all don't mind to spare some time to discuss, because it's definitely a LOT! I would greatly appreciate it. I wish social media existed back then for Kpop. We would've all had much more fun interactions.😘
Thanks for tuning in to this video! If y'all have any constructive criticism on this video, please feel free to let me know! I'm all down for improvement.👍🏼 And if y'all have any suggestions on who to react to next, feel free to fire away in the comments.⬇️ Thank y'all so much and please stay safe out there!

PPS. some quick 411 about me:
    - I'm Cambodian and Chinese.
    - I was born in November of 1983 (so I'll be 37 this year) and raised in Houston, TX.
    - "OG KPOP STAN": I've always used the term "OG" (supposedly "original gangster") to define being old-school, and I became an avid Korean music aka Kpop listener/lover since 1998. Kpop was my coping mechanism from the bullying I experienced in my younger years and it's just stuck by me ever since.
    - I was a hiphop dancer for about 7 years. I did the whole crew thing, auditioning thing, competition thing, choreography thing, dance instructor thing, so I have some experience in that field and I hope to be able to share some perspective from my experiences for y'all to see the extra things that I appreciate about a video when I point them out.
-My videos can have quite a lot of cuts in editing and/or my eyes will unnaturally blink rapidly sometimes. This is because of my neurological disease that came with my lupus nephritis (posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome). My thinking abilities and speaking abilities struggle to align at times.
    - Yes, that's Jack Sparrow's ring that I always wear in my videos. I've been a Pirates of the Caribbean fan ever since I rode the ride for the first time ever in Disneyland when I was a kid.🤓

Your takes on the theory are really interesting. What is great with these kpop artists that go the extra mile to have storylines with their MVs is that there are lots of possible interpretations (some make more sense but still) and fans can discuss forever and discover new things or point of views!! 🤯
Next 3 MVs ("What", "Piri" and "Breaking out") can also linked to this arc.
And as you notice and like dance, you should check their dance practice videos!

There is a definite story line which you can easily find with Google, but there are also the feelings the story evokes and that's different for everyone. The writers have taken mythic images from Asian and European cultures and combined them, so Koreans will recognize things that Westerners will not unless they're familiar with Asian mythology. There isn't a wasted frame in any of Dreamcatcher's MV's. Sometimes you have to decrease the playback speed to see everything and try and puzzle it out, or you can just enjoy the music, the beautiful voices and the skilled dance.

I'm going to try to keep to the key points in the story here, for 2 reasons. One, it's always more fun if you try to figure out all the little details yourself. The second reason is that I don't want this to turn into a 92 page dissertation on my take of the story. Trust me, it This could turn into a real novel if I didn't rein myself in. Also, keep in mind that outside of some key points there is no 'official' story. According to interviews and etc, they have purposefully kept the story vague so that we, the fans, can come up with our own interpretation of the story. So here goes...
    Fly High key points.
We open the video with a group of girls attending a boarding school. JiU captures a spider and decides to keep it in a jar. This angers "The Lady", the mysterious woman who puts the curse on everyone's favorite kpop girl group. Yoohyeon, for unknown reasons, decides to kill the spider with a magnifying glass. Over the course of the video we see that everything goes from bright and cheerful to dark and ominous as they all succumb to the curse and get turned into Nightmares. All but JiU that is. At the end of the MV we see Jiu run out and close the gate, locking the curse within the confines of the boarding school.
Sidenote: At one point in the video JiU sees herself sitting at a piano which is her first indication that something is seriously wrong. It seems that, somehow, JiU has gained the ability to see the future, possibly as a byproduct of the curse. This becomes a somewhat common scene throughout the videos.
Chase Me and Good Night key points.
Some years later a paranormal investigator arrives at a haunted hotel, formerly a boarding school (see the connection?). At this point the girls are trapped in a sort of alternate limbo. I call it "The Nightmare Realm", mostly because it makes sense and it just sounds cool. They have no real physical form in the real world, hence the cameras not picking up their images. They do have some limited ability to effect objects in the real world, much like poltergeists, like when Siyeon holds the door closed, Gahyeon pushing the books off the shelf and etc. Over the course of the two videos we see the members giving the investigator nightmares and, in general, just messing with his head.
At the end of Chase Me he's finally has enough and takes an ax to the perpetually locked room 808, their inner sanctum (I guess). In this room he finds what I call The Book of Nightmares. You pretty much hit the nail on the head with this one. As he leafs through the book he releases the members worst nightmares, Gahyeon's fear of falling from a high place and Sua's fear of being held immobile. Dami reaches through a mirror and retrieves the book. By burning the pages they free Gahyeon and Sua from their worst fears. They also use the book to set up a ritual to free themselves (the Blair Witch stick figures), swapping places with the investigator, trapping him in the Nightmare Realm behind the mirror and setting them free from the confines of the boarding school / hotel.
Side note: A lot of kpop groups have colors and even animals associated with each member. Dreamcatcher takes it another step. Each has an associated nightmare. These are listed on the kprofiles website.
    You and I key points.
JiU, our fearless leader, who somehow avoided the full brunt of the curse is trying to free the other members from the curse. She manages to free all of them except Yoohyeon (silver hair), who is left kneeling at the portal after it closes. I believe the part of the video where we see the old woman turn into a giant spider is where The Lady reasserts her hold on Yoohyeon. She did, after all, kill the spider.
    Now here's the best part...
You're not done yet. There are still 2 more 'chapters' to the story which is told in the What and Piri MV's. I await your reaction to these 2 videos.

Not sure if you agree, from a lyrics perspective, Kpop songs currently do not really have strong lyrics or they are inconsistent, i.e. chorus often just some gibberish words (at times, calling them words is pretty generous) thrown together for rhythm etc. One thing that drawn me to Dreamcatcher other than the tone and style of their music, the song lyrics are pretty strong and do attempt to tell a story either directly or through the use of imagery and to me, it is pretty underrated.

    • @leviberg2377

Yeah, I would disagree with this. I think one of K-Pop's strong points is the lyrics...although, to be fair, pretty much everything is a strong point in K-Pop.

@@leviberg2377 You do know I am not saying ALL of Kpop songs have bad lyrics right. Just that those with fantastic lyrics are not that common or often that "rated"/popular. Also, not sure if "Why Not" by Loona will be the best example of good lyrics. Not saying it is a bad song, but just looking at lyrics only (and it is subjective) and I actually feel that they have much better lyrically composed songs. To me personally, "Why Not" lyrics is the opposite of great lyric writing (again, its subjective and you might disagree). I do agree with you on Daisy and Back Door.

I think you're on the right track with your interpretation near the end. Basically yoohyeon burned a spider back in the day and that ended up with all of them cursed, trapped as nightmares. In Chase Me and Good Night, you were right in that they were "having fun doing bad things", following their nature as nightmares. You and I, What, Piri was that phase when they realised they had enough and needed to get out. Yoohyeon was the one who burned the spider so she was the focal point they needed to find and save, but this is just my speculation. Breaking Out is their Japanese release but some speculate that it is the last song in the nightmare arc.
Extra: outside of this storyline, the lyrics to What and Piri as standalone songs do talk about mental health.

Ok I'll give you a rough watered down version of their nightmare story.... rest you'll have to figure out 😉(there's no fun if I tell the story completely)
so the nightmare series starts from "Fly high" as per the storyline!
So before all these mess dreamcatcher were living very happy life ..so during fly High Jiu finds a spider which she keeps in a Jar but because of temptation yoohyeon burns the spider (you can see smokes coming out of the jar when yoohyeon burns the spider with the magnifying glass) but the thing is spiders have a very special relation with nightmares so because yoohyeon burns the spider that's why she gets cursed and you can see the continuation of that in "You and I" where you can see that yooheyon is cursed by the spider (represented by that lady of whom she was clicking picture) and as a result yooheyon gets lost in her nightmares and falls asleep forever that's why you can see her strangled in spider webs.. the members try to bring yooheyon back to living but there's only one way
If they want to bring her back to life then all the members would have to sacrifice their identity and everyone of them will become their nightmares
Because of they know witchcraft already so they finally sacrifice their life to their nightmares in order to bring yooheyon back but in the end they all became their nightmares
In chase me A guy who has been trying to find the truth of dreamcatcher finds a old school. he feels that something is wrong in this old building! but what?
He gets there to inspect by himself and sets up cameras
dreamcatcher hunts him so that he wouldn't be able to find the room (which has the secret of dc) but at the end he finds that picture and the secret of dreamcatcher that's why he smiles
In goodnight he finally found the dark spell book which was kept in the old school building and he tries to capture all the nightmares (aka dreamcatcher) by using that book because as long as he has that spell dreamcatcher's powers can not affect him but at least somehow SuA distracts him and at the mean time dami steals the book and burns the pages
now dc has their powers back and they trap that guy in the mirror forever
"What" MV basically shows the struggle to get out of the nightmare... and they wants to wake up from their dream.
so now the questions are what were they doing in the school in fly high? why did yoohyeon kill that spider.. who tempted her? What is the relation of spiders with nightmares? How did dreamcatcher know witchcraft? Why did the nightmare hunter guy wanted to capture dreamcatcher? What is the meaning of that picture of them together? What was behind that 808 room that led him to the dark spell book?
You'll have to find their answers... good luck 👍
waiting forward to see scream era after the nightmare series ends... try to react to their songs "deja vu" and "R.o.S.E. Blue" after the nightmare series and before starting the dystopia trilogy (scream era)
these songs are collaboration with games and they are not connected to any other storylines they have their individual story! you'll love those songs!

It takes me such a long time to figured out their storyline too. Rewatch it over and over again and comment section also help a lot. 😁😁
Also, if you have time, you should watch the dance practice or live stages. But I prefer dance practice as you can see everything. Their choreography is not to be taken so lightly. Especially this 2 songs. Just watch it on your own time. You won't be disappointed. Trust me😉

Between the end of Chase Me and Good Night, the Nightmare Hunter manages to catch half of the nightmares using the Nightmare Book. The ones who are left use the mirror to get the Nightmare Book to rescue the others one by one (the burned page rescues one of the girls, for one) and then they use the book to trap the Nightmare Hunter in the mirror dimension.
You and I takes place years after Good Night when the girls let their guard down and make a photo studio to make ends meet. Yoohyeon is their chief photographer and this was the opportunity the Spider Queen, disguised as a client, was waiting for. Yoohyeon if you remember is the same member who killed the spider in Fly High by burning it with a magnifying glass, thereby cursing all seven girls to become Nightmares. The Spider Queen takes her soul as revenge. Jiu, their leader, feels responsible for everyone's safety and is haunted by her failure to keep Yoohyeon safe. This leads into the next arc of the Nightmare series starting with What.

I miss the times where K-pop is all about talent and the music and the choreo. And Dreamcatcher brings back all of that.
For you to wonder about the storyline, you're not alone. Even though there is a straight up story for their nightmare series. But as the members told us, they themselves were confused with the storyline and were also wondering where the story leads to. Well, that's the fun part. We InSomnias sometimes literally get insomnia wondering about the storyline and there are loads of theories, lol!
Your theory isn't wrong too. Goodnight is something like the girls are fighting back the guy investigating them. That book belongs to the girls, and it's in his possession. He even trapped two of the girls and the rest were try to save them buy burning the book pages. In You&I is somewhat a continuation from Flyhigh but after ChaseMe and Goodnight. Where the spider lady takes revenge on Yoohyeon who killed her with the magnifying glass in Flyhigh.
Looking forward to your following DC title tracks MVs. After that, you can check out their choreo videos or practices which showcase their awesome synchronisation and ripple effects and the beautiful choreo. Look out for their intro choreos, which I always love.

it's strange but the girls themselves said they didn't understand the stoty in the first two videos. Yes the first two. Fly High is a flashback meant to be seen third. In the first two you get to see what they are and what they can do. In fly High you meet the Spider. DC Borrows from a lot of places. Harry Potter, Sailor Moon ect. In one culture you go on a vision quest and meet a spirit animal. You have to kill it to claim the power it offers. They become nightmares with power in and over dreams but the spider owns them. In You and I they break free of the spider but are still nightmares. From now on they are trying to wake up. You keep getting tastes of the different nightmare each of them is but they are trying to wake up.

Fly high is when they we're apparently normal girls with normal lives then Jiu found a spider and for some reason kept it in a jar and for some reason Yoohyeon got possessed as we can see her being drawn into the mirror in the MV then she completely changed from that cutesy look to a fierce look which could possibly mean she's a different person now and i think the book Dami's holding is somewhat an information on how to get Yoohyeon back to them but that book is slowly turning them into a nightmare one by one and this is why Jiu closed the gates meaning that nobody should see what they're doing because it will be dark and dangerous hence we get You and I where the girls tried to bring Yoohyeon back to them but their attempt failed, the ritual also consumed them which turns them into a nightmare that will bring us to Piri when they're trapped inside an endless room and being consumed one by one by their nightmares and at the end of this Piri we can see that all girls are together but they're not themselves anymore but the nightmare version of them that will bring us to Chase me where many years passed and some paranormal investigator guy came in with the info about the girls, i think he knew what happened to them so he want to try and save them but the nightmare version of girls has another plan from him so they start to haunt him and lure him in the room where he found at the end which contains basically everything about the girls that would bring us back to Good Night where he found the book of rituals that one we saw Dami was reading on fly high is the same book but somehow is kind of sealed since it was the very book that trapped and turned the girls into nightmares so this guy tried to read and investigate but the nightmares are now hunting him that he thought were there normal girls and in the end as he was trying to investigate they somewhat lured him into viewing the mirror and that's how the nightmares escaped the nightmare world and brought them back into the living world as the girls. The End. The What and Breaking out storylines are the story in which the normal girls are trapped into another world trying to escape. In the MV of the breaking out all of them are trapped in a thread which symbolizes thr spider's web like in you and I but somehow the web is preventing them from making contact from one another that's why we could see them reaching out and the What MV shows how each of them deals with their own nightmare but the only ones who met inside was JiYoo (Jiu and Yoohyeon ship) and others are struggling finding a way out of what they seem to know as a dream hence the lyrics "wake up break up my dream" but in the end they're trapped and there's no way out which we could see at the end that they're inside of that crystal ball. Sorry for the long explanation 😂 if you want to watch it again here's the order
    Fly High
    You and I
    Piri
    Chase Me
    Good Night
This is another story from which how the normal girls are trapped because the nightmare girls prevailed and was brought back into the living world this is the story of the girls trapped in the nightmare world
    What
    Breaking out
this is just my own theory on the way i see things as i watch the MV's 😂 so if you read this comment you might probably have flashbacks and want to rewatch the order of the MV. I hope you continue your dreamcatcher journey and get to know the members and I'm also dying to know who your bias is 😂
