    Took a little time, but I absolutely love the Gnome workflow. I too mostly work with slightly overlapping windows with occasional snapping. With some great default keyboard shortcuts gnome makes this workflow sing. I have a few extensions too but they are getting fewer over time. Caffeine, AppIndicator, and sound chooser is all I really need. ddterm is a nice to have. On 42 now (garuda) and looking forward to eliminating the sound chooser going to 43.
    Also looking forward to trying Blur my Shell and OpenWeather. Thanks for the tips.

      I'm like you, I love me some KDE. It's not as great as it was back in the early 2000's, but it's light years ahead of Gnome in freedom to make it look and act the way I want it to.
      I switched to KDE after XFCE started feeling like it was dead in the water and getting way over simplified. An interface being way over simplified is also my problem with Gnome. It seems like they have removed everything that OSX doesn't have then half implemented everything OSX has.

  • @ravagingwolverine

    Linux excels at providing options and customization, so everyone can do what they need to get the system set up how they like. I never really got the "outdated" tag. If I go back and look at Windows 98, yeah, that looks visually old, but not so much in concept. Looking at the various Windows-like desktops for Linux, they don't look old or bad to me. So I just don't get that. But I've never been a fan of too much window dressing, effects, or various bells and whistles. I like my OS to just exist and not get in my way, and the Windows-style taskbar is my favorite way of doing things. I do some minor customization, of course, but it doesn't take much to get XFCE set up the way I like it. Add a fun desktop background, and I think it looks quite nice. I just don't get on well with different interfaces. I hate the Apple-style dock. I don't like variations on the taskbar or grouping window managers. I guess I'm a creature of habit, but I guess that really resonated with me in that I don't need to change like others. When I moved to Linux, I started with Opensuse KDE and Mint Cinnamon, both of which I liked very much, but came to prefer Cinnamon. I've since moved to XFCE, and have played around with MATE(I might dive deeper with it) and KDE(it's good, but a bit too different in a number of ways). I can easily jump between Cinnamon, XFCE, and MATE, but everything else feels too different. Again, while those are old fashioned or classic, I just don't get the "outdated" thing, either in function or aesthetics. I find so-called modernization usually ends up being annoying at best and frustrating at worst. But that's just how my mind works, and I want to emphasize that options and customization are a huge reason why Linux is so great, so no hate from me for doing things in a totally different way. If my desktop is outdated, I just can't see it, and I'm happy living in the past.

    When I went from Pop!_OS to Fedora I really missed pop shell, specifically toggling tiling mode, I found it didn't quite work as well as on pop and I was worried about it breaking with newer gnome versions. I found an extension called Forge, which basically does the same thing. The Devs are very active too.

    • @BrodieFairhall
      @BrodieFairhall Год назад +1

      @@asdfghjkl-jk6mu I really like Fedora, I doubt I'd go back to an Ubuntu based distro any time soon.
      Forge is great, but it's missing a little of the polish that the pop tiling has. It has an annoying bug (which I'm looking at fixing myself if it doesn't get fixed soon) that occasionally messes up tiling if you close a window on a workspace when there are windows open on workspaces to the right of it.
      Other than that it's really quite good.
      I really disliked the initial "cosmic launcher" mostly because when I go to my activities view, I like to visually choose my window with thumbnails, rather than cosmic's list of the window titles and the app icons. I tried to get used to it, but switched back to the gnome activities view.
      I only left pop because they were stuck on an ancient gnome version and didn't have Wayland support.
      I'm really looking forward to the full cosmic de, it looks great, it will get some amazing community extensions I'm sure and even if I don't end up liking it, it's going to be great to have more variety and the whole community will benefit.

      @@w3w3w3 I'll definitely give pop a try again when the new de ships. The version of gnome in the current version is missing so many new QoL features and while the cosmic launcher is powerful, I don't like it visually and really dislike the split activities view. I also hate how it shows small icons for each window rather than a large thumbnail of each window. I didn't realise how many really great features vanilla gnome (especially on Wayland) has added until I installed pop on a PC recently and realised how much the old gnome variant they're using is missing. Really looking forward to trying the new cosmic de though.

    The one thing I know is that my next laptop is going to have an arm cpu inside. If by then pc hardware gets comparable to apple's and linux can deal with it, great, but if my thinkpad were to break tomorrow I'd buy a macbook, no question about it.
    On DE's, I started using Gnome on my laptop because of the material shell, works great, fits my workflow perfectly (after changing the keybinds) - my desktop is still KDE, it is just so much leaner and quicker... I try to get whatever software I can made with QT instead of GTK, it is just better IMO. But I did configure it with bismuth and a side bar and top bar etc etc to work like on material shell - I honestly can't recommend their workflow enough.
    My next step is going to be to see if I can use KDE activities instead of virtual desktops for the side-bar, but we'll see, I never got the rhyme nor the reason for KDE activities

    Linux is perfect, but there are some modifications of Windows 10 (eg. Atlas OS) which provide Windows Apps support and .exe installation without any other third party installation of Wine in it. I am also a Linux die-hard fan but since I tried 'Atlas', I forgot that Windows ever lagged. I didn't regret using it yet. It works as fast as Gnome though 100%, whoever is reading this, try it once you'll know....

      Interesting. Since Windows is not open source, how do they keep from getting a copyright strike?

      @@stephenwilson0386 Because it has some limitations that only original Windows has eg. No Windows Update, No Windows Defender, etc

    Hola! Please forgive my quick self-insert; I cannot get a straight answer on the Motherweb. What is a good distro for a really old Mecer Classmate (sort of a kiddies starter laptop from years ago), with an Intel Atom N270 1.6 GHz processor, 30Gb disk? It's a really shitty thing in Windows format, but I like the midsize keyboard for writing purposes, so I wanna pop in a workable 32 bit distro. Thanking you all for the loving prayers and thoughts.

    Gnome is the way for me as well. Being able to invoke Activities Overview by using a three finger swipe up (with Wayland / libinput) and snap windows to the sides / make them full screen with Super (Win key) + the arrows is super great. It's muscle memory from daily driving Windows 11 and it makes Gnome feel like home.
    Plus it kinda looks like Android with the latest releases and I really like the fact that it kind of bridges the gap between my mobile devices and my desktop in terms of visual cohesion while still respecting my pre-existing Windows muscle memory and habits.
    And thanks to it, even Ubuntu (which I used to loathe visually because of its garish orange highlights that weren't straightforward to get rid of) looks GREAT with just a couple mouse clicks to adjust the highlight color straight from the Settings menu.

    the pure RUST based system76's COSMIC will be awesome. It uses RUST iced framework to build apps instead of gtk/qt. Rust is "fast".😋

      Yes indeed! I'm really curious to see what the System76 team will accomplish. PopOS already has the best implementation of GNOME imo.

    • @NormanF62
      @NormanF62 2 года назад

      System76 is ditching GNOME because the interface is all wrong for traditional PCs and laptops. They want to go back to the desktop metaphor but do it more efficiently than KDE.

    I understand the charm of Gnome, but it was the DE that kicked me out of Linux twice until I found Endeavour with KDE.
    But after having tried a couple of DEs I still could not match the boot speed of one of the Gnome installs I had some time ago. It was so quick I couldn't tell if it was actually booting or if the screen was just locked.

    Is Nobara Linux safe? i'm new to Linux and I'm trying some distros to choose the one as daily driver. Nobara fits perfectly with my hardware [for example, is the only distro with no audio problems in live testing (i tested Fedora, Kde Neon, Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Manjaro etc..)] but is the only with I've to disable Secure Boot in BIOS. Anyone can explain me why? Can this affect the security of my data? is one of the main reasons why I would like to switch to Linux.

    • @alter8231
      @alter8231 2 года назад

      From my experience nobara is completly safe. It's developed by very active and respected linux community member, so I think it can be trusted. Regarding secureboot, here's one of the entry from their FAQ:
      6. Is Nobara compatible with SecureBoot?
      - No. Nobara ships with a kernel that has been custom patched and is built and hosted on COPR. Packages hosted on COPR repositories have no simple way of signing the kernel after it’s been built.

    I use KDE because their developers recognized the pain of fractional scaling for HiDPI modern laptop screens and makes sure users don't get to hurt their eyes with worst 100% scaling which Gnomie Desktop didn't pay heed for years. Gnome developers you really suck at this

    Man, I freaking miss Linux. I left Linux and stayed using Windows 11 for the past 4 months. The only reason I am not using Linux for a while is because my laptop's soundcard doesn't support Linux (I need to build a custom kernel but kinda tiresome for me, I'm just a Linux beginner) and my studies mainly rely on Office 365, Microsoft teams freaking suck on Linux but I heard there will be changes to Teams on Linux, might as well switch when my laptop's soundcard finally work.
