CARVING a BURL CANE

- Had a recent trip to Saint-John, New Brunswick and picked up a burl by the ocean. Also visited Rob Cosman at his shop and he gave me a great tour of his shop and made for a great trip.
This burl is hard and has some interesting grain in it. Shaped it with files, rasps and other hand tools. Mounted on a cedar stick and it makes for a comfortable cane. Finished with Teak oil and polyurethane.
If you can get a hold of some burls, give them a try. No two are alike and it really makes for a striking topper to walking sticks or canes.
Great piece, Jason! Reinforces the old notion about the ugliest bits of wood making the best projects. Love the curves. Amazing how many stick makers seem to fear a non-straight blank when, as long as the curves balance each other out, a curvy stick is just as solid as a straight one.
Exactly! However, I tend not to go for curved sticks and this one was around my house for a few years, but this project fit it perfectly. Thanks for watching
Wow ! You'll never go wrong with a lovely piece of burl wood and the grain on the cedar really pops too. I haven't been lucky enough to come across a piece burl wood yet, but I keep hoping ......... Beautiful piece of work 👍👍
Thank you very much! I had no clue how it was going to turn out but it was fun seeing the shape come out during the process
Beautiful work!
@@AmyJo143 thank you!
Another great walking stick and an enjoyable video! I love the curved walking stick! What is next?
Thank you! I do like how the curved stick came out. Haven't thought of the next one yet... one step at a time
