Footage of students protesting the appointment by Emperor Haile Selassie of Lij Endelkachew Makonnen to serve as prime minister of Ethiopia.
    Reuters Text:
"The students of Addis Ababa's university sat around the campus on Tuesday and refused again to attend classes. They had been boycotting classes for days in protest against the country's new Government. The Government, headed by aristocrat Endalkachew Mckonnen (sic - Lij Endelkachew Makonnen), was appointed by Emperor Haile Selassie in a move to placate the armed forces, which had staged a virtual uprising in support of demands for higher wages and the downfall of the ten-year-old Government.
The armed forced are now back in their barracks but the reforms came too late to stop an upsurge of civil unrest following massive inflation in recent months. As the students gathered to protest, the Ethiopian Labour Unions called for a general strike on Thursday to demand a substantial increase in wages."

    Note:
    1. The initially bloodless coup which overthrew the monarchy in 1974 developed into a train of unceasing violence. Commencing with what came to be known as ‘Black Saturday’ on November 23rd 1974, it was followed by the internecine struggles within the junta, known by the Amharic word for ‘committee’, the Derg. The assassinations of General Aman Andom (November 1974) and later Brigadier Tafari Benti (February 1977) paved the way for the rise of Mengistu Haile Mariam as the overseer of the ‘Ethiopian Red Terror.’
    2. Haile Sellasie, who had ruled for half a century before his overthrow, became the last emperor of the 3,000‐year‐old Ethiopian monarchy. His death was announced by Ethiopia's military rulers on August 27th 1975. The cause was not stated although it was suggested that the effects of an earlier prostate operation combined with his advanced age, had fatally weakened him. Years later, it was revealed that he had been strangled in his bed by Marxist army officers of the new regime.

Haile Selassie was an unmitigated disaster. Aside from his ineligibility to take the throne, being descended through the maternal line of the Imperial family, from his coronation speech it was obvious that he was unfit to rule. Ethiopia having barely escaped for an occupation at the Battle of Adwa, was in desperate need of modernization to hold its own against the European empires. Yet, this buffoonish man fixed his mouth to declare that all nations and races are equal because they are under the reign of heaven. Well, the Italian invasion and occupation of this country with teach him that on this earth, there is no equality. We see his character and his response to the Italian invasion, here he is absolute Lord and Master of ethiopia, an absolute monarch, and when faced with the invasion of this country he flees like a coward with his tail between his legs. His Ascension to the throne what's a disaster, his retention of the throne after his cowardice was a catastrophe. As was said of the German Emperor after World War i, so it was for Haile selassie, he should have gone off and died with the army. He should have gone down fighting like a man. His post-war reign of Ethiopia was equally as incompetent. He made no efforts at the modernization of his Nation nor efforts to influence the newly decolonized African countries. If it were not for the buffoonish descendants of slaves who worship this man is a God he would have already been forgotten. His name should be blotted out from the memory of Ethiopia as a catastrophe.

The drum was beating. Far from it. The sky was darkening. While the Emperor didn't know that 2×2=4 the train was coming. He was caught suddenly off guard like that defrauded generation. Alas, since then, the nation's life is a series of one trauma after another truama. The rest, as they, history.

Emperor Haile Selassie was a noble leader, truly patriot, consummate diplomat, kind, generous, and a man of honor. He deserved to be honored as a symbols of national tradition, symbols of the highest level of civilization, and a bearer of a tradition rooted in the principles of Natural Rights. The students, workers, teachers, bureaucrats and the treasonous Army, poisoned by the toxicity of Marxism, Leninism and Stalinism killed HIM and destroyed Ethiopian+Eritrean heritage, civilization, and noble tradition. They chose the diabolical teachings of Marx and Mao over their common heritage and values. His Majesty was not perfect, but compared to those who succeeded him. Meles being the exception, His Imperial Majesty was, as I said of “The immortal Meles, a bright star in the highest firmaments of the Horn of Africa, Africa and the World.”! Ethiopian pride was disgraced when Mengistu violated God’s low and suffocated HIM to death. Vengeance, vengeance, rule of low and justice vengeance.

@@TseggaiIsaac what a complete and utter fool you are. The man had no right to sit on the Imperial throne, per tradition. If we are going to accept such absurd ideas as the divine right of kings, but is bear in mind that God took the crown from Saul and gave it to David. Haile selassie's repeated in other failures to do anything to lift up the Ethiopian nation, to modernize it, even to protect it from its enemies, cost him his throne. Are you forgetting the famines in which he allowed his subjects to starve in the millions while he did nothing? If he was God's appointed ruler, God saw fit due to his constant dereliction of Duty to remove him from the throne. This man should have his name blotted from history and only remembered as a catastrophe. Whatever shucking and jiving he did for the appeasement of white Europeans is nothing for which Ethiopian should be proud. Pretty speeches do not put food in your belly, nor do they guard your home. Instead of running as ignorant mouth trying to convince Europeans of equality under god, he should have been actively building up the capacity of his Nation to withstand withstand European Invasion and plotting The Liberation of all of africa. As it has been said before, it is always true, if the Europeans praise you, know that you are a traitor.
