If he arranged Prayer Oh Doctor Jesus from Porgy and Bess, then it's that one 100%. It's so moving and powerful. That entire album is wonderful. My Ship and Boplicity are others that come to mind that I really enjoy.

To be in Gill’s band was a great honour. My five years with him that were the most important. To play with Gill means that you become a disciple. Anything you play afterwords has a piece of Gill in there. At our first rehearsal, he tore up sheet of manuscript paper into parallel pieces and put a note at the beginning. He handed out these strips and said to each member quietly “this is your note, if you don’t like it, you can change it”.
Gil was also a sweetheart of a man. I used to go hear his band most Monday nights when I was studying classical composition at a conservatory in NYC. I would grab brief moments with him between sets to talk to him and show him a few things I was working on. He was so gracious with his time and comments on my work.
More than 60 years have passed since the stunning, revolutionary works of Gil Evans (inspiring my work since 1957, after after the release of Miles Ahead). I don't think we've yet realized the full value of Gil's contribution to new thinking for large orchestra arrangements. He undeniably paved the way from the traditional big band to the Modern Large Jazz Orchestra. Not for dancing and entertainment, but for Reflection, like after reading a good novel, which, in my opinion, is very much appreciated for a person's spirituality.

Hi Brian, I have no idea if you like to drop down into your comments and take a look, but I'd like to ask you something either way. I think you're a really smart and capable musician and person. As an autodidact myself (to no degree as successful or talented as Gil), I'm wondering if you have any tips on learning and internalizing music theory better. See, I can get certain concepts, I can kinda read sheet music (kinda, started working on that recently), I have a big whiteboard above my PC with the circle of fifths, the modes, 7th chord formulas and so on. But where you, trained musician and lovely folk, start talking about all of these things with a high degree of facility, I tend to freeze up and not quite catch up on everything. Any tips for an aspiring wannabe musician, who's looking to both improve and make music? Thank you very much and best regards. Keep making these cool videos :)

One more thing I'd like to add: Music educators on RUclips deserve more than they'll ever get sadly. People like you, Adam Neely, Braden Holmes, David Bruce and many others are doing such huge things for humankind providing us with the power to music. As a person who's loved music ever since my ears could hear, I'd love to learn a bit more about the way you guys do the bothersome things that might look impossible on the outside. A friend of mine is an amazing musician, trained in double bass from the age of 12. I love him to bits, and I recognize a lot of incredible traits in musicians of all shapes, sizes, nationalities and backgrounds. I am truly humbled to be a part of a community so great. Honestly, I look back at these older videos of mine and find many mistakes/poorly chosen words/etc... and I just have to be at peace with that fact and try to do better in the future.
