I found that the Ice Worm appears in relation to the player location. I had been trying to memorize where it comes out of the ground and then rushing over to those locations thinking that it was fixed, but by doing that, I ended up missing critical openings to hit it. When I realized this was not the case, I was finally able to get the S rank.
Run 2x zimmermans and 2x stun needles. Dont use the needles at all for the first 2 times after you down him, and only use them once each on the third time. Keeps ammo cost low to give you more wiggle room on repair costs.
I just did this and you're absolutely correct. Only use 1 needle at a time when breaking his shield, even in phase 2. You'll get 4 shots off with the zimmermans during the times the shields are down in the first phase no matter what and deal the same 1/3 of his health in damage. Only after the final and 3rd shot from Rusty can you unload. Try to stay nimble as best you can and you'll wipe it out with an S rank in no time. Thanks again not_creative for the heads up!

I used dual needles and zims with the tetrapod hovering over everything. Just need to time your shots at it. At the very start when you get to the worm, it will go down but watch the sky as the head will pop up fast, hit it then.
You only need three weapons for this S rank, the pile bunker, the redshift oscillator on the L-back unit and one stun needle. Use the Basho arms to give you more melee damage. Use the lammergeier/42f legs to hover this will give you clearer shots with the stun needle to take down the shield. When the worm is on the floor use a charged pile bunker hit then switch to do a redshift combo (if the pile bunker hasnt already done enough damage). In the last stage you may need to finish it off with a stun needle shot after doing the melee combo.
Just adding my build for those jumping in later. Pile Bunker, Sweet 16, stun needles and pulse shield. Let the team deal with the drones to conserve more ammo. Used pulse shield after it’s second hit when it goes nuclear. Ended up with 9k repair and 11k ammo costs for the win. Time doesn’t seem to matter, but just don’t miss any of the obvious setup shots when it lingers (you don’t really need to go for it when it does a quick head pop up unless you think you can hit it). The real key though is keeping repairs and ammo down.
If you are bringing double stun needle, make sure to fire just 1 to the shields and just use them on the last stun, first and second have a fixed amount of damage you can deal with shotguns or other guns
I can confirm this is almost nothing to do with time. Just minimise getting hit. If you lose less health than a heal gives you, you'll likely get S rank. That was with no quick stuns apart from the obvious first stun which is when it first comes up.
It depends. Used mainly pilebunker so my ammo cost was 10k and had a repair cost of 24k (cause that damn worm hit me while I lining the shot one time) but got S rank. Also didn't miss as many shots as in this video so was likely faster.
Use the zimmermans over the miniguns the ammo cost of the miniguns will generally net you an A rank in my experience. I took more damage with the zimmermans than I did with the miniguns and got the S rank.
If you're still having trouble, I just did it. Equip tetrapod legs. Right after you finish damaging it from the second shot, start hovering above it before it puts on its shield. Once the shield is on you can quickly get another stun round off to damage its shield.
The trick is to spend little ammunition. I put melee on my left arm and left shoulder. Charging attack of both should do enough danage for each phase. Good luck.
i did it second try not sure if i just got incredibly lucky or what but i rolled with 2 zimmermans. also in the last stage i hit him with back to back stun needles when he went up and paused for a second and immediately broke through his final shield. i also didn’t shoot any stun needles while he was already stunned until the final stage to preserve ammo costs
This doesn't work. Just use the Pile Bunker when it's down and only ONE needle, 2 is a waste. Ammo usage is the SINGLE most important thing in this mission. Also try not to get hit too much.

One of favorite missions on my first playthrough, but I despised it when I was done with my S rank.

i never managed to keep snail or iggy alive but i did pull off keeping chatty alive, still got a a or b rank i think lol

Feel free to swap the redshft blade for a different blade. I just like it to take a few drones out when the worm launches them in the second phase

I think it is time. I had only 11k expenses with over $405k income and only got an A. I took very little damage.

No repairs, small amo, take shotguns , less movements.

Using the barrier helps still at a rank give me your luck.
In this fight repair cost matters a lot, try to keep it under 6000
