When I love it's a most contentful kind of painful love because it's deep and so additive that it's like a drug I gotta have til it evenutally kills me no matter the consquence. I'm an endless hopeless romantic til the end no matter my age. Beautiful but very sad and tragic the life and love of Lucy and Desi. Rest in Peace

      Some men can't help it. It's difficult but we must let them go. Trying to hold them is worse. You can't keep a wild animal in a cage, it dies of sadness. You got be a wild animal yourself like a lioness, never submit. But that's too hard when you just feel like being a kitten. I guess you must giggle between the two. But God you must roar. It's easier to be single and independent.

      @op is a nitwit.
      If you think their marriage ended just because cheating, then you have a very shallow view of their problems.
      First off, Lucy did her fair share of cheating too. Henry Fonda was one of many she cheated on Desi with.
      She could also be a very judgemental and controlling person, which drove him away. Even her own kids said that they were emotionally closer to Desi than to her. He was more accepting and forgiving of people's faults.
      Not only that, there was jealousy and resentment - he was a proud, macho Cuban and it hurt him to not get the credit he deserved and to always be in her shadow.
      Also, he had all the pressure and stress of running the studio once it grew to enormous and more complex, while still acting full time on 'I Love Lucy'. Lucy said herself that she did not help with anything on the business end of things at Desilu until after she bought Desi out following their divorce.
      Those were some of the many factors that caused his cheating. It wasn't a simple case of having a wandering eye.

      @@kleeamd8274 There is no need to call someone names such as “nitwit” just because their post doesn’t agree with your “opinion”, that’s honestly very immature.
      Also, your post isn’t based on fact, it’s an “opinion”, everyone has their own “opinion” and are free and encouraged to share it on this platform.
      There is absolutely zero evidence Lucy carried on an affair with Henry Fonda after she and Desi were married.
      I have heard that Jane Fonda , Henry’s daughter claimed they had an affair back in 1968, 8 years AFTER she and Desi were divorced (and she was married to Gary Morton) but I personally would not trust a thing Jane Fonda says.
      There is also a massive problem in Desi and Lucy’s marriage that you neglected to mention in your comment… Desi’s SEVERE alcoholism (vetted by MANY different people in Hollywood and also Desi himself).
      Another fact (not an opinion) is Desi was going to brothels long before he met Lucy (and after, he never stopped).
      Back in Cuba in fact… When Desi turned just 16, his uncle took him to a brothel to loose his virginity. It was an accepted part of his Cuban culture. (Source, TCM Podcast, The Plot Thickens)
      Wealthy Cuban men often had 2 families in fact. 1 house for the wife and kids and a second smaller house for the mistress and her kids. (Source, TCM podcast, The Plot Thickens)
      Desi came from extreme wealth in Cuba. When Cuba collapsed he came to America with only the clothes on his back, and started completely over. But he brought his culture with him, and in his culture, it was acceptable to have a wife and many side chicks on the side.
      It had been well documented in the newspapers even, about Desi’s CONSTANT cheating. He in fact told Lucy “but honey, it means nothing, they’re just hookers”!!! …. So he cheated LONG before their success…
      Desi and Lucy had a very complex relationship. Like any relationship, both parties are “guilty” of this…. Or that… etc.
      But it is an absolute fact that Desi’s constant cheating from day 1…. And his constant drinking was a massive, massive problem. LONG before there were any other problems in the relationship.
      Also, the ugly way in which you describe her here is the complete opposite of how her close friend described her in his book about her (Lee Tannen, I Loved Lucy)
      Lucy had endured a lot of pain in her life, from the very start, she had a lot of abandonment issues. Direct quote from an article by Lee Tannen in an online article, The Guardian….(I edited out the eff word) …..
      “She told me that she never would have left him if they weren’t so famous and so in the public eye. The looks that she got from all the people in Hollywood and the women who were her friends who he f@&ked: she couldn’t take it any more. It was really the womanising and the drinking and he couldn’t deal with the success.”
      So yes, Desi couldn’t deal with the success and the stress of it all…. And she in turn couldn’t deal with his infidelity and drinking….20 years of putting up with that is insane.
      I do believe (along with all their close friends and family) that Desi and Lucy were in fact soul mates…. They both loved each other until the day they died. Desi would in fact send her flowers on each and every one of not only their anniversaries… but also her birthdays.
      The very last time she talked to him on the phone…. Was in fact on what would of been, their 46th anniversary. And she kept saying over and over and over “I love you, I love you, I love you”….. and his last words were “I love you too honey, good luck with your show”!! (Source, Lucie Arnaz) he died 2 days later.

      @@kleeamd8274 unfortunately, this is so true. He was overworked, and wanted to get from under the stress of acting, directing, producing, managing staff, building an empire, doing media junkets and promos, all the while trying to keep her happy, being a father, and provider. He said it in his book and in interviews. He wanted to give some it up but she wanted to keep pushing ahead and stay in control of it all.
      I'm not condoning his behavior, but there was a lot passive aggressive behavior. If he felt he wasnt heard by her, he lashed out to hurt her with an affair. The drinking was to self-soothe, and the gambling was escapism.. inwishbthey had both went tona reputable marriage counseling instead of just to Dr. Vincent Peale's positive thinking sessions. They really needed therapy.
      Now, when Lucyb bought Desi out, she hated being the leader of everything, too. She saw how the pressure felt, and eventually she sold everything.

    • @kleeamd8274
      @kleeamd8274 2 года назад

      @@trina7274 there IS a need to call someone a nitwit when someone so callously sums up that the sole reason for the failure of Lucy & Desi's marriage was Desi not being able to keep it in his pants.
      Don't try to police my language. You don't run the comment section. I'll say what I damn well please. Don't like it? Tough
      It's also funny how you consider heresay from one person lies and from another the gospel truth. So Jane Fonda saying Lucy & her father having an affair is a lie but Lee Tannen's account is the gospel truth.
      LOL Why? Because it fits your argument & your adoring opinion of Lucy?
      And what I said isn't opinion. Lucy having her own affairs has been backed up by several people, including Desi Arnaz himself and even Lucie Arnaz.
      Furthermore, Lucy had a tendency to self medicate with alcohol herself. Stop painting her as some martyr or angel
      Desi himself said Lucy had her own affairs, "Marriage is okay, but adultery is more fun. Just ask, Lucy"
      It was also known that Lucy had a fling with Henry Fonda during her early marriage with Desi, which made Desi so insanely jealous, that the director Irving Reis barred Desi from visiting Lucy on the set of 'The Big Steet'
      Even Lucie Arnaz said it was very possible her mother cheated as well while they were still married, in an interview for 'Palm Spings Life'. She referred to it as Lucy cheating as sort of a "touché" back at Desi. Here's an excerpt:
      That child, of course, was Lucie Arnaz. And, maybe luckily for her, she was not sure whether or not her famous “I Love Lucy” starring parents had cheated on one another or not.
      “I don’t know,” Lucie Arnaz said, “They went through some really bad stuff together, and I wouldn’t be surprised if at one point there was a ‘touché,’ you know? It was a very complicated relationship, and so passionate it was ridiculous.”
      Sorry, but it's really naíve to think Lucy didn't step out herself, whether it was out of hurt and a need for consolation when she was upset about Desi, or as a form of payback, or out of loneliness when he was away for long stretches or even at the end when he wasn't coming home as much.
      Lucy said herself that she loved men and it was easy for her to fall in love. Before Desi came along, she dated and had her pick of many of Hollywood's most eligible leading men.
      I also saw letters exchanged between both Lucy & Desi when Desi was on the road, and Desi was pleading just as much for Lucy to stay faithful as she was for him to.
      They were both extraordinarily gorgeous, young and vital. They both were very passionate people. They both were living in Hollyweird where giving into temptation was not only accepted but encouraged. And they both were only human with vulnerabilities just like anyone else.

    Few people find a love like theirs. Desi's philandering was very hurtful to Lucy, but she loved him so deeply that she was able to forgive him. If someone is truly sorry for cheating, they repent and never do it again. It was the repeated philandering that forced Lucy's hand to divorce, and even then, I don't believe she really wanted a divorce. She may have secretly hoped that this step would finally make him realize how precious was the relationship he was jeopardizing. Instead of moving on to different spouses, they could have spent their golden years together. Oh, if only Desi would have realized that growing old beside the love of your life is something to treasure, not worth risking. A beautifully done pictorial compilation with beautiful music and lovely quotes!

    • @theclassica91classic60
      @theclassica91classic60 6 лет назад +12

      I actually think it was his worsening alcoholism that finally pushed her to divorce. He began to have angry outbursts as the result of increased drinking, and even destroyed the first floor of their Roxbury home because of his anger over a burst pipe. He also became addicted to gambling. The women, gambling, and drinking as his way to relieve the tremendous stress he had in running Desilu and ILL. Lucy only did the acting in those first years of the show and Desi did everything else. It was too much stress and it destroyed their relationship.

      @@theclassica91classic60 Yep. You are no doubt correct in your assessment. The drinking had escalated to an ugly and very destructive level. Yes, no doubt Desi's stress was the leading factor in his increasing dependence on alcohol. I think Lucy instinctively knew she was up against a game she could not win at that point.

    My favorite TV and in real life couple! What a great life together these two had even though it wasn't for a life time. This is the type of love we all yearn for or at least I do. I need to be in a passionate relationship or its not worth it to me. A love like this is very hard to find and for a life time is even much more rare. I believe Lucy's real love was with Desi and her second marriage to Gary was a marriage of convenience, a very common type of marriage. I'm sure Lucy loved her 2nd husband in her own special way but nothing like her first husband Desi. Oh, I forgot to mention the back ground music was beautiful went so well with this love story. Thank you for choosing the right music because I have watched countless of videos on youtube where the wrong music that was chosen ruined the whole show.

    I had a love like that with my first husband....and until the day he died, our love was so strong...so intense....I remarried, as Lucy did ( to Gary Morton) but it's never been the same......to have been loved by someone so deeply and so intensely.....it's well, something you can never find again.

    Bahhhhhhhh!!!! I cried at the end. Seeing Lucy kissing Desi and him going to kiss her back.. Just so sad and so tragic that Desi could not get himself together enough. Although Desi blamed his infidelity on cultural differences, I suspect a number of reasons.. Non-the-less, they really did both love one another and always did. I love that they remained such good friends till the end. It's said that Desi never got over Lucy. We know that Lucy never got over Desi. I believe that.

      I still don't understand why Desi would cheat on Lucy with prostitutes. He's been with her 6-7 years before it went downhill. I drank, gambled and got with hookers. How could Desi say he still loved Lucy if he did that? I just don't get it. :(

      ramir233 I read somewhere that Desi had said that back in Cuba the men would marry, but also have mistresses on the side. I think he said that his father, grandfather etc were that way and it was normal. Maybe it was a cultural thing back then and Cuban wives accepted it. But, Lucy wasn't Cuban and Desi wasn't in Cuba.

    God they were gorgeous. Classic case of two people that are absolutely mad about each other, and knew it, but couldn't live together in the end.
    When you love someone so deeply as they did, your feelings for each other aren't just going to switch off after the relationship ends. Very glad they were able to stay best friends until the end.

    Very few people until after his death,gave credit to Desi.He was directing a number of hit shows for CBS,(AND I Love Lucy) and all the attention was on Lucy. He was ignored much of the time,and he turned to drink and women. Not excusing the behavior,but it happens.Lucy's daughter said when they came home from work,Lucy was constantly on the phone.It was Desi who made sure he played with she and Desi Jr. He wasn't perfect, but I believe the press made him too much of a villain. The children adored their father.

    • @mattbernabe
      @mattbernabe 6 лет назад +10

      I've heard that as well. Lucy would either be on the phone, out or rehearing her script. Desi had a busy schedule as well, but he always made time to play with his kids.
      To this day, he still doesn't get the credit he rightfully deserves for his pioneering work in television.

    • @lilyemmalindsay9025
      @lilyemmalindsay9025 6 лет назад +8

      @@mattbernabe Lucy gave him credit at least. People were racist against Desi because he was Cuban & Lucy had most of the attention because she was American. Cruel to know, people were racist against Cubans.

    • @mattbernabe
      @mattbernabe 6 лет назад +9

      Lily Emma Lindsay I believe they still are racist cause his name hardly ever gets brought up for his contribution, unlike some other artists who have passed on and are constantly being recognized for their work. Sadly, Desi is still pretty much in the dark. Pretty cruel. I've mostly seen Latino artists are the ones who bring up his name. I know a t.v. movie about them was made in 2003, but if they ever make another film or a limited tv series, hope it will be more accurate and fair to both Desi and Lucy.

    I've read each quote for many times in different places. This is a first time I see the "Desi was the great love of my life, I will miss him until the day I die" Where is it taken from?
    There's nothing I want more than to know that they loved each other till the day they died but we will never know that. Only they know it.
    He hurt her very badly which changed her mentally and physically, she said it herself, yes, she forgave him but it was never the same. He humiliated her in public which was the last straw.
    Desi was such a genius man. He was the genius fellow that made Lucy a comic genius. He was innovative, trailblazer man of all trades, a great business man with a foresight no one had back at those times though as Lucy said, he had to ruin it.
    He had a destructive button that with his background, it just made him pressed on it and just ruin his life.
    We will never know how they truly felt in the end. People would like to believe what makes them feel good.

      Laura Stone .......and boozing

    • @kleeamd8274
      @kleeamd8274 2 года назад

      @@csu4227 If you think their marriage ended just because of his cheating and boozing, then you are very naíve
      First off, Lucy did her fair share of cheating too. Henry Fonda was one of many she cheated on Desi with. She was also known to drink quite a bit herself.
      Easy to judge others when you haven't been in their shoes.

    There is no love like Lucy & Desi's anymore. They were the most in love & passionate couple that ever lived. They loved each other more than any lovers in history. Even though they divorced. Lucy said she never tried to get over Desi & that she never regretted marrying Desi & there was nobody in the world for her but Desi & he will always be her favorite husband. They probably divorced & fought a lot b/c they loved each other too much. She also only wanted Desi as the father of her children. When Desi died she couldn't stop crying & that her life had come to an end & she lost her youth & great success & didn't wanna consider what her life would've been without him.
