Yeah I was thinking about that around the 20-minute mark, he's changed so many topics.. he allows time to rant and tangent, but he's good at it, he's so good at it he always comes back to a final point.. But he allows himself to space to get there in a way that I am jealous. Also I've not had any trouble following this at all.. I've had to go back a few times when I missed a relevant number or something about what he was talking about.. But like.. I've been listening to this for 2 and 1/2 hours at this point and it's just flowed exceptionally.. I've seen him do the 5-hour interview with like lex, but holy shit... I didn't realize you could do 3 and 1/2 hours by himself... This is like what my inner thoughts sound like except from somebody that is capable, and influential and stuff.

Thank you, John Carmack. I fully share your feelings about modern displays. OLEDs will settle this down, but the time wasted on LCDs will still not be possible to have back.

even though I only understood 0.1% of what he said he is amazing! he looks genuinely in love with what he does so that makes the 3 and a half hours just flow by for him. it doesnt even look like he uses any kind of paper to read from or a teleprompter, thats how brilliant he is.
and to think im having trouble doing a 10 min lecture...

I had the same opinion on UMA about that time of year and nobody I knew shared my views... I wish I had seen this sooner.

Not everybody can appreciate what Carmak says. You need to understand about both the tech and the man. It's fascinating hearing his thoughts on games, software and engineering.

I love how even though I am listening to what he is saying I still just stop and say "when the hell did he stop talking about the thing that he was just talking about and start talking about this?"

I agree, money is something that is the basic factor in it all and I too get annoyed when companies take that path. Lets not kid ourselves, id did the same thing with rage and they admitted it, but I hope (and that's what it looks like from videos like this) that Carmack (who doesnt control the direction of id as much as how it advances) honestly seems to love what he is doing and works hard at it :)
Thank you for understanding that I wasnt trying to change your mind. Was nice chatting with u ;)

Many thanks to Carmack for this keynote. Hearing about his own R&D was very inspiring.
I hope he tried how environments like ArmA II go about things when simulating infantry and has seen the potential with avatar modelling in conjunction with VR headmounts for sights, scopes and when controlling vehicles or aircraft.
Considering it is Carmack, he probably has, but nonetheless it does not hurt to rant his way with regards to the future potential of simulations with an active modding community.

Anyways huge respect to this guy....I myself dreamed of being able to become game/software developer, but it quickly became clear to me just how challenging programming can be....it's just one of those things you really need to be really passionate about, and it's not something you can simply learn from school, you really need to put time and effort to it...ofcourse some are just more naturally talented in it, like Carmack, who just figure these things by themselves and really became a legend
