To me, James Cameron is like a combination of Kubrick and Spielberg. Like Kubrick, all of Cameron's films are masterpieces on a technical and visual level, as there's not one film of his where you're not blown way by what you see on screen. Cameron is also uncompromising and a perfectionist, which leads to long shoots and going over budget, something Kubrick was infamous for. But, like Spielberg, Cameron knows how to make his films accessible to a wide audience, and knows how give his films an emotional core to keep the average moviegoer invested. I love Stanley Kubrick, he's one of my favourite directors, but let's face it: his films have computers where their hearts should be. Cameron doesn't have that problem. That's why Cameron is my all time favourite director, because he can make intelligent, complex, well-shot and gorgeous-looking films, but you can still sit back with your popcorn and be entertained by them.
My all time favorite filmmaker and love the collaboration between him and Rodriguez because Alita is now my all time favorite movie, waited for it for almost as long since Cameron announced it. Never imagined I would love it so much as I did never seen a movie more times in a theater. I always loved or enjoyed all his movies he has ever made.
Yeah, Cameron has the heart of an artist with the mind of an engineer. He must be the only filmmaker that can break down a camera and tell you what each pieces are for, what purpose they have and how they work. Because that's what he did as an autodidact tp learn filmmaking, he went to a library to nab books about photography, bought a camera and broke it down pieces by pieces to understand how it works then reassembled it to shoot his first short. He built and patented his own 3D camera with Vince Pace, also customized cameras for underwater expeditions.
James Cameron is one of the greatest, most inspirational people that ever lived. This is the man who gave us Terminator 1 & 2 and Aliens for God's sake!
Michael Gonsalves Ahh but I can't say I enjoyed those as much as I enjoyed his earlier work. Somehow when people are younger and hungrier for success they produce their best work. Most of the time anyway.
southlondon86 I agree completely, I would watch Aliens or over Avatar any day personally, but it still mind boggling how he made two of the top grossing films ever.
What a legend. Here's a man who dragged himself up and did it the hard way, his way with amazing results. The story about him living of two for one cheese burgers in his car is brilliant. He's another great visual director who can always draw very well like Ridley. I never had the dedication to succeed in life or in films. Does he have an autobiography out? Wish he'd get a hold of the ALIEN franchise and make loads of them as the Alien world is massive.
He’s my idol and my role model! His life story and success is one to always be admired and respected. He went from being a machinist, a janitor, and truck driver to being called a legendary director for making just seven movie. I CAN’T WAIT for the Avatar sequels! Combined with his two documentaries, he will have made 13 total films. For him, 13 will be his lucky number!
@Evan Carmichael: Of course, no problem, glad to. Even before I became a huge fan of his, his movies always fascinated me, especially Terminator, Terminator 2, Titanic, Avatar, etc. How do you think he compares with other directors like Spielberg, Scorsese, Kubrick etc. ?
He's my idol too. I ask myself all the time at work, "What would Cameron do in this situation?" I know he wouldn't half-ass it, so i don't half-ass it.
Thank you, Evan Carmichael, for giving James Cameron the opportunity to share his "Ten Rules For Success" formula. I think this was a good interview, you brought to Us. You had good positive energy with Mr. Cameron and produced a succinct production that got right to the point and did its magic.
James Cameron can't be emulated. His life, what he does, how he does it, his drive and passion for everything he does can't be taught. What he has, what he is, what he does, is deep within him. He is an inspiration. Like a preacher or psychiatrist, his narrative, his delivery is uplifting. If an individual applies what he's saying, they can be lifted to their own higher level. But it's hard work. 24/7. That's what makes him Him. How many people are willing to do that?
#2 "paint your dreams for real" & #5 "value past experiences" it's SO easy to discount the things you've been through or the things you see in your mind's eye as irrelevant to your progress or whatever goal you're striving toward. But these 2 points really magnify the idea that EVERYTHING matters and can MEAN something if you take a moment and truly view it! Loved it! #myfield #BTA31 (also loved the banner info at the bottom! I learned SO much!😉)
For me the images rarely appear in my dreams, but frequently in that moment right before falling asleep where your mind is running wild, half dreaming half awake. It's crazy how vivid some of those images are, years later.
Very true! Being Indian, I'm able to understand his passion and drive for excellence, moving past obstacles. Great 10 tips for success! No doubt, I watch Titanic even today!
Hi Evan Thanks for so many great inspirational video clips. In light of his recent passing, how about a top ten from Prince. I think it would be a challenge as he didn't give many interviews, but it would be great. Thanks for your great work!
I love Seize the moment and his explanation. "The universe is like a huge bank vault and the tumblers are constantly moving. Once in a while they align in your favor. Listen for the click." Good stuff! I heard the click! BTA#1
Ima huge fan of his work, I couldn't pick just one rule they all really resonated with me. I just watched a ted talk about the power of drawing your goals and to hear him say paint your dreams really confirmed that concept. Great work! #BTA118 #teammotivation
The last comment meant the most to me. To paraphrase: consistently persist in striving towards your goals so that when those fleeting moments of opportunity appear, you're ready for them.

Terrific film maker. Loved Avatar & Terminator 1 & 2. While as an enviromentalist I love what he does. At 80 I've seen 98% of insects 90% of birds 80% of animals & fish destroyed with all wild places either destroyed or damaged to a greater or lesser degree. On a modest pension I support 7 wild life/environmental groups plus Amnesty. 'F'lora & Fauna International' is my favourite but 'Bug Life' for insects is very important as are the others. The greatest Film ever made is 'La Strada' by Fellini. I'd like you to do a piece on Fellini. I have one terrific script if James were interested.
Dropped out of community college. Worked three years as a truck driver. Made his first film financed by dentists seeking a tax write-off. Lived in his car while writing the Terminator script. Sold the script for $1 under the condition he could direct. Now has three Oscars, two of the highest grossing films of all time, and a net worth of $700 million. Everyone has to start somewhere.
