I just put a seal kit in a 2130 a month back. I duct taped my short pick on to a long screw driver and it did the job but I like the look of the pick you made. It took me a couple of hours to change the little orings. It's always fun to watch someone else do it to see if there is a better way. Thanks for the videos.

Hi Lance. I just wanted to say thank you...
I am in the UK suffering a bit of a heat wave and my little John Deere 1040 steering started spewing oil.... I am struggling at the moment and was dreading the charges from the garage so I decided to have a go myself after watching your excellent 3 part series of videos.
Well it was a bit of a struggle but I got there in the end and the only cost was a seal kit (£30) and a bit of hydraulic fluid. You have helped keep me afloat for another year and I am very grateful. Once again...sincere thanks and keep up the good work.

Hi mate I’ve got a John Deere 3130 I’ve got a problem with my steering
I’ve got over a quarter turn at the steering wheel before the wheels start to move
Would rebuilding the steering box fix the problem

Ok thanks, grinding noise coming from pro clutch area and all hydraulics gone, it’s draining the upper reservoir faster than the low pressure pump can fill it. I was hoping not to split the tractor but here we are….thank you for your reply.

Great series, I had to replace the o rings in the field 6 years ago (oil leak and as found out broken shaft threads). It was quite a ... because while positioning them the oily tool fell through my fingers in the depths, I managed to get it out with two knitting needles wrapped in double sided scotch.
Now the shaft turns out when turning left and I will replace the unit in the field. Because of an aftermarket cabin removal of the steering shaft cover might be a little problem, I will find out tomorrow morning.
They do need to turn out while being used as that is how the valves are actuated so some up down movement is ok.
Hello my friend Lance, I suffer from a weakness in the John Deere hydraulic pump. For your information, the pressure sensor is in good condition, but there is a weakness in the steering wheel that moves with hesitation.
Check the trans screen and the trans filter and that the transmission byoass valve is seating well.
FIRST! Oh and it is currently 27f -2c with snow on the way. I'd rather be getting an early jump on a machine outside than being stuck in an office. Thanks for sharing!

So I dropped the pin on the steering link into the tractor 😮 any suggestions on how to find it and get it out? Or do I need to split the tractor? Should have listened when you said put a rag here

G Day Stacey, Hopefully now I have finished my camper I will be able to get back to it. They should have a bit of up down movement to work the valves. Check the bolt that holds the pitman arm on as it can come loose and give you lots of slop.

Great video! That plate with the six bolts on the right side you remove is that a dry hole or does hydraulic fluid pass through there?
On the 1640 it just goes straight to sump, on a 30 series in traps the oil first
Hey Mate, Great videos. I have lost Hydraulic pressure on my 1978 John Deere 2030 , If behind this cover talked about at the start it is over flowing with Hydraulic fluid would tis point to hydraulic steering problem? or is this normally full in here. Thank you in advance
It gets some, cap off the pipe to the steering and if it fixes the problem you know it is in the column.
Lance, your videos are great and helped me to rebuild the front axle, etc. on my JD 2030. I have a question about the cavity in the clutch housing just below where the power steering unit is bolted to the tractor. I had an oil leak in the half-moon-shaped cover that you removed around the 6:30 mark on the video. I pulled the cover off and found a lot of emulsified oil and some grease in there. As far as I can tell from the service manual, oil that leaves from the power steering unit drains into this cavity to lubricate the yoke and steering shaft, and then overflows into a drain that returns the oil to the main transmission sump. Is this correct? The hydraulic oil on the dipstick looks pretty clean, and I don't want to drain and refill the whole system if this bit of gunk is isolated in that one relatively small cavity. Your thoughts - and anyone else's who has some insight into this - are welcome. Thanks again for the great videos!
Yes that is correct, they seem to get muck in there but I thing the cavity catching it must stop it going further.

Thank you for doing such a good job describing the process for rebuilding the column. Have a 2030 with power steering leaking hydraulic oil from under steering area. Leaking when running or not running, can this leak be coming from bottom oil lip seal from steering column? Oil looks to be coming from area where steering pitman arm is.
Pitman arm leak will be the lower seal, the top leak will be one on the 6 o rings in the top of the column
The oil seal you are talking about is in the steering box itself or seal next to steering arm.
Can you rebuild a early model 2040 steering column with open hydraulics. If so is there any way I can send my stering unit to get it repaired thanks
No I dont have time to do outside work at the moment.

G day Joe, if your tractor doesn't have hydrostatic steering it will be exactly the same job. Hydrostatic means a steering motor
Thanks for the video, I have a 3130 where the oil started coming out through the top of the steering wheel. I watched your video and changed the 6 orings put it all back together and now only have power steering turning left. Comes back to centre fine but it’s complete arm strong steering turning right. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
Check you have not cut an o ring sliding it together as I have done that in the past for sure, also when it is back out check the 2 valves and make sure a little bit of an old o ring isnt stuck in the valve.

They do get warm but if it works and doesnt leak dont worry the heat may be generated else where.
i have old 2130 and sterring ws loose and now sterring wheel just spins and tires dont move
G Day Monty, I would pull the plate off the rh side near your foot throttle and then turn the wheel. The Dog Bone mat be broken or the main pitman shaft. I have also had the piston come off but the end result is to open it up and see what you can find.

Great video! Can you give me any advice to my John deere 2140 where we got the problem that its not leaking oil but the steering wheel turns free a few inches in both Directions for some reason and when you tourn the steering, the steering wheel goes up and down. We've torn apart the steering and it all seems to be normal but the movement in the steering wheel is still there.
That is what is supposed to happen, the up down movement is to open and close the left and right valves in the column. You can lessen it by removing some shims in the center but if you go too far you will have other troubles.

i saw those hornets and it reminded me of this bag of used potting soil i had setting on the deck out back ,turned out yellow jackets dont like being poked by a ham fisted any more than your hornets . i hope you got a bit of payback.............

Hi, I have a 2040 looks close to the same as your 2030 my tractor has a problem going straight it will go left and right every where but stay center I replaced the bell crank bushing but did not help any suggestions? Thanks
G Day Gary, do you have hydrostatic steering? You can tell by the 4 hoses coming out the back of the steering motor. Or if you have this type tighten the nut on the top of the pitman arm

No I have never had one here to do.
quick question on my 2140 rebuilt the orbital steering column for an MFWD after installing it. How do I safely bleed it? I tried it and the whole steering column shakes and I havr to shut it down.
G day Nathan, you need to time the unit. Try googling it they are a self bleeding system. Keep your fingers out side of the wheel as it can turn into a motor and could break a finger or arm.
I haven't got the info here on my phone but might have it at work next week.
