Great job on the teardown and diagnosis! Very well done young man! Great rebuild as well. Thanks for sharing this with us, it helps many out here doing the same thing. Take care, God bless!
We have a 4960 in our workshop, and the big difficulty are the parts because this tractor does not have many in Brazil. If you are available to give us some tips it would be fantastic as soon as the pieces are obtained. Great Job!!! Congratulations!!
There are shops here in the US that specialize in tearing down GE Jet engines which are vastly more complicated than these tractors. The jet turbine parts are crazy expensive and the labor rate is through the roof. There are mechanics in every field who seem to have a knack for complicated mechanisms. RE Engineering seems to be one of these shops with one of these gifted mechanics.
Hello, a few months ago I bought a JD4955 powershift transmission. Before I bought it, I tested it - everything was fine, except some little jumps when shifting gears. I have not driven too much - just about 80 hours - attaching a plough, testing the plough, working with a trailer and so. Afew days ago I started to prepare the tractor for new mulcher - to put defense from trees bellow the gears. Tractor worked fine. In the next morning, when I started the engine and switch to reverse, the tractor started driven ahead. I turned it off, restart the engine and again - put on reverse it was going front. At the same time the front gears - work fine. After I disconnect the rods and manually tried to switch to reverse (from the cover of transm valve). Tractor still going only forward. After a few more tries - I discovered that when switch to front (1-15) the tractor starts moving, but when push the brake, it stops (with engine still running). Then when I switch to contact, I hear the alarm and the arrow for front travel on the left of the screen is on. Then I decided that it coud be broken spring pin (holding forward/reverse valve), but no - I dismounted and the valve is OK. Could you please give an idea how to continue to diagnose the problem and what could be the most probable reason for this problem? farm.jnj@gmail.com
I didn't catch the part where you adjusted the output shaft preload..🤔 Loose bearings on the output shaft cause failures such as you experienced.. FYI, the output shaft supports the tail end of the planetary carrier and also keeps the sun gears centered in the rear planetary gears.. If it becomes loose in the bearings, it becomes a free-for-all inside the planetary pack!! Also, the preload on the output shaft bearings has to be checked and adjusted with the planetary removed..
Good day I'm from Ukraine Recently bought a John Deere 4650, after repairing the gearbox, problems began On 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 forward gears it seems like something is slowing down, it is very difficult to drive and 1, 2, 3 reverse gear is almost impossible to drive Could you suggest something, did you have something similar? I will be very gratefu
i completely destroyed a powershift last year. didn't break ring gears an plates, but all of the output planetary gears were smashed. Turned out to be cheaper to replace the entire clutch pack rather than rebuilding.
At our shop in Indiana I have a 4955 transmission torn down. I have a question was there thrust washers on both sides of the last gear you put in the output planetary in the center of the transmission? The one you replaced the bushings in at 8:40. Appreciate it thank you from Indiana
How do you get the pto gear & clutch out. Have tractor split rebuilding front half. Got the cherry picker on the gear with the bar to lift. Pull it forward and it hits on bottom of housing. Supposed to pull lift and tilt right out by manual. If you had any issues w that. I’ve done one before and it pulled right out
Can you give more picture and mor info how to dismountling transmision jd 4755. Regards from Romania. You are using some special tools for dismountlung
Thanks, it’s responsible complex but pretty well thought out and more serviceable than you would think. The diagnostics with the powershift can be more troublesome than the rebuild. This went back together very well, there’s a lot to get right but I stick to my own method and follow the literature where needed for specs, torques and tolerances, and it all falls into place (usually)
Just subbed dude, film some more of your jobs you do fella, defo interesting having a look at other folks way of doing stuff, especially JD stuff,I live in Ripon the home of Ripon farm services John Deere dealership ,who do you deal with fella!??👍🏻🇬🇧😊😊🤘🏻

Hard to say exactly, there’s always other thing that eat time along the way, but I would say if I wasn’t doing anything else to it and stuck at it with parts at the ready, u could limp it in on Monday morning and drive it home Friday.
Hello mr Ukrainian Farmer! Hoping you and your family are safe and well! To give you a price for repair would be very difficult without testing and stripping your transmission down, there are so many different elements involved, maybe yours isn’t as bad as this one was, but if you were going for a full rebuild here in the uk with considerable damage inside then you would probably be heading towards £8-10k for everything. There’s just far too much to consider to guess a figure! I would ask, what gears do you have? What gears don’t do anything? Is the pressure light on? Sending well wishes and respect to you and your community! Rich

Sorry only just seen your reply! My names Rich, it seems like you have something serious going on inside the output planetary housing, I understand things are very difficult where you are and you need to get the work done, but I fear that the more it’s driven the more damage will be made. Try to stay out of any gear that doesn’t engage straight away to keep her going as long as you can, I know this is not much of a help to you sorry I can’t say or do more without looking at it myself Rich
I can see your knowledge of JD is very great. May I have a question in the model JD 4055 lost gears over ten. Which part of the gearbox may have been damaged (which is responsible for gears ten to fifteen?) How much parts for such of repair in the US can cost ? Regards from Poland
Difficult to say what the problem is with out testing the transmission! But from what u describe I would have a guess that something is wrong with the rotary controls valve which is operated by the gear lever, each gear in the transmission is a combination of 4 out of 9 clutch packs engaging at the same time to create one speed. Each of the packs used in 10-15 are used in lower gears & Reverse. which indicated the individual packs are ok and maybe the actuation of them is the problem. There are so many thing that could be rong, maybe u have a issue in the lower gears but just can’t tell yet. It needs testing really. Can’t say on cost as there are so many variables and I’m uk mate.
What do you use to seal between the input planetary housing and transmission case ? It doesn’t look like there was any sealant there when it came apart.
I’m not sure if there is a pattern with them, the main advice would be if you notice something wrong even if it’s small, get it checked out! U might save yourself a bigger bill in a couple hundred hours time! I think at your hours you are prob good for a few thousand more. If I was to do anything to keep it in good order it would be to get the transmission accumulator gas pressure checked, as that will stop any slippage when changing gear under load and it will keep the gear change quick. Also keep good oil in her!
It’s not that bad, they can be trouble but mechanics is mechanics. Try todo everything to a high standard don’t cut corners and it should be fine. The hydraulic circuits on them can be another story mind but this one was spot on, all back together first time working a treat
