Thanks for your comments. We are members of Marrickville Heritage Society, so this wasn’t all that hard. The biggest challenge was, having recognised the changes that resulted in the area following the Tramvale Estate floods, after which industry took over a large area of what was set to become housing for the working class. This resulted in the second video, Industrial Marrickville. We are very pleased with the number of views both videos have received. Coming shortly “Industrial Granville,” which truly has been an enormous challenge, because there is so much of it.

In the last two days we have seen a renewed interest in the Marrickville Video. This we cannot explain, but we do know that a Facebook sight called, I think, “We Love Marrickville,” was responsible for a previous spike. Could someone please explain? Thank you in anticipation.

Another place associated with my family. On 19 October 1888, my grt grandfather's sister Louisa got married to a John Clarke at St Peters Anglican church, Cooks River. That side of the family had moved to Marrickville(Alma ave) from the Shoalhaven Sth coast. So nice seeing these videos of places associated with my ancestors

You are correct, with regard to the marriage, but in the marriage register for St. Peters Cooks River, he is down as living at Tempe Park ( now Sydenham) and she, your aunt Louise or Louisa is a resident of Macdonaldtown. He was born in Nottinghamshire and she at Newtown. In that they appear to have no children baptised at the church or anyone buried, you are probably correct in thinking they moved to Marrickville. Do you know of Sands Directories? Have a look at the videos on St. Peters Church Cooks River on our RUclips Channel. The stained glass windows may be of particular interest, in that they were put in in the early eighteen eighties, so your ancestors would have viewed them at the time of their marriage. St. Peters Church has an open day on the first Saturday of the month, from 2.00- 4.00 pm., to view the church and graveyard, weather permitting. At the end of each video, you will find our website mentioned. Should you wish to contact us for further information, this is the link. Information is free.

    Hi!
I’m trying to find more information on Charles Moyes my 3 x great grandfather whom was mayor of Marrickville from 15th February 1888 - 1889. I believe Moyes road was also named after my family / Charles. He came from Perthshire in Scotland. I have photos, objects lots of things from him and trying to connect the pieces if you could help!
    Thank you!

In the Australian Town and Country Journal of 16th of June 1888 there is a sketch, head and shoulders of your grandfather and a detailed biography, which tell us that he was a native of Perthshire in Scotland. This we found in “Trove” along with some fifty or so references to him in newspapers, when he was the Mayor of Marrickville. It was the custom of the time to make much of local council meetings. I’m writing this on a tablet. The Creator thinks we should be able using google on a computer to send you material. An easier way may be to contact us through our web site, which you will find us mentioning at the end of any of our videos. We also have contacts within Marrickville Heritage Society. I would not advise using initially the local library.

We would be delighted to hear more of your father’s family story regarding Marrickville. We are very pleased with the performance of both Marrickville videos. “ Industrial Marrickville,” has people fondly remembering working in a factory there. The flooding of the Tramville estate in the 1880s caused the area to be unsuitable for housing, which explains why industrial development took place in the area. That the now Sydenham railway station was originally Marrickville points to how Marrickville was suppose to develop.

Excellent video. Thank you for that review of history. I was hoping for the inclusion of Marrickville Swimming Pool and later the opening of Enmore Pool.

Thank you for your remarks. The answer to your question regarding the swimming pools, is that, they can be described as being built in 1962, which we considered to be in ‘living memory’. In truth, we have included, factories and the like which existed in this period, that are no longer. In creating the Marrickville video, what was to have been one video, became two when the number of factories, which are no longer in the area became evident. This would not have happened, had the Tramvale Estate floods not happened, rendering a whole area of Marrickville unsuitable for housing, but available for factories. Congratulations, as the first person in over 850, to leave a comment of any sort. We had wondered why the site had become so popular, until a member of the We Love Marrickville Facebook page, pointed out how much attention it had attracted. So if you are a member please thank them.I could go on as to what we are hoping to achieve, but I won’t. I leave you with one last thought. The Marrickville we have presented in our video is the historic suburb, not the former Municipality. There are other suburbs of the former municipality, which we could do a history of, but which one?
      Regards Bob Horton.

Thank you for your follow up remarks. It was a very nostalgic video. I myself went to school at St Brigids Primary and later to Casimir and lived in multiple locations in Marrickville with my last address on Francis street. So a lot of the areas you discussed brought back memories of growing up. Oh btw. I was also going to mention the Marrickville RSL club. That was another place with good memories where our family would go and see the variety shows in the evening.
