JUDY GARLAND: MUNCHKIN MARGARET PELLEGRINI TALKS ABOUT JUDY & 'THE WIZARD OF OZ'.

- Interview with famed Munchkin Margaret Pellegrini.
Pellegrini held two roles in the 1939 Wizard of Oz classic. "I was one of the Sleepy Heads in the bird's nest, and also one of the gals who wore a flower pot hat. They put me right in the front row!" Ever since then, the flower pot hat has been her trademark.
When Alabama born and raised Pellegrini was 14 years old, she visited the Tennessee State Fair to help her brother in law pass out potato chip samples. "Some little people came down the walkway and asked if I'd like to join up with their midget show. I said no!" But at the same time the teenager didn't know she was going to be a little person. "I had no idea I was going to stay small, but I guess they saw something in me that made them know before I did. They said that I might change my mind and told me they'd keep in touch."
Soon she got a letter from a Hollywood agent asking if she'd like to be in a motion picture called the Wizard of Oz. "I was so excited. I would get room and board, transportation and $50 a week for six weeks of filming. We decided I could take the job!" Since she was only fifteen and on a to train to Hollywood all by herself they appointed another little person to be her guardian for the trip.
"Judy Garland was a sweet girl - a typical teenager and she loved the munchkins," recalls Pellegrini. "During film breaks, Judy would sit and chat with us on the Yellow Brick Road. We were all so amazed to be working with a star - but she was equally amazed to be working with all of us." Judy was so excited when she got her own personal dressing room on wheels, she opened the door and invited all 124 munchkins to go through. She gave me an 8 x 10 photo of herself and wrote on it "To Margaret from your pal Judy."
Now -in turn - just as Judy Garland autographed a picture for Pellegrini in Hollywood, Margaret Pellegrini does the same in Chesterton , Indiana during autograph sessions at the Wizard of Oz Festival.
After the MGM production, she continued a career including tap, hoola and fan dancing with several performance troupes. Later in Chicago. Pellegrini worked in a nightclub. She met her husband and got married in 1943. Even though she only knew him for six weeks before the wedding, their marriage lasted almost 40 years until he passed away in 1982. When asked if she has children, Margaret Pellegrini says "I have two-four-six." That means two children, four grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Throughout her life, the beautiful lady of miniature proportions has spent most of her efforts, time and love raising her family, but she is also ever so proud of being a long-time member and having held all the offices within the Fraternal Order of Police Association (FOPA). Now residing near Phoenix, Arizona, Pellegrini recommends that others of small stature join their local chapter of Little People of America (LPA.)
It was in 1987, that Pellegrini found out about Jean Nelson, who conceived and established the Wizard of Oz Festival in Chesterton Indiana. "Now, the Duneland Chamber of Commerce's Festival is the largest and oldest event of its kind. It has become a highlight of my year and I've been a part of it ever since I found out about it. It was the start of my Oz family."
"The Oz story has such meaning," says Pellegrini. "If everyone would use their hearts, their minds and their courage, life would be so much better for all of us... and," she smiles, "there really IS no place like home."

that lady is my great grandmother, she pretty much raised me. and for those who say she was a nice to you, she was a pain in the butt for the rest of us lol... i miss her dearly. but im so thankful that she was famous...because of that, i can hear her voice any time of day. R.I.P. Nana and thank you for all you did for me...
srsly
+Gi is absolutely. 100% truth.
Wow that's amazing..... She was nice to me when she signed my picture a few years ago lol ! May your Nana's legacy live on and maybe you should go into show biz too !
idk why but i looked it up on google and it said a person named Barbara... is Barbara your name or Barb or do you get called Barb? i´m going to put a piece here of what google had to say
She was survived by daughter Margaret, grandchildren William III, Anna, Juliette, Joe, Vincent, and Dawnelle Mowrey. Great grandchildren are: Anthony, Ashley, Barbara, Cheryl, Dalyn, Elizabeth, Heaven, Kaylee, and Shayla, and one great-great grandchild Sejla.
that´s what wiki said :D
Linda Gustavsson yes, I go by Barb, but Barbara is my full name.
I love that she's dressed as the munchkin here! So sweet!
She was actually at the retirement home I work at and I must say she was a very lovely person. So glad I got to know her before she passed away.
kingan666 my mom met her too at the big Texan when my mom was a manager there and 4 other actors from the movie one of them was the coroner in the movie and she had them sign a menu to give to me which is awesome
Wow
kingan666 when she passed away..
2 things stood out for me in this interview...
1- I had no idea that the munchkins had a star on the Hollywood walk of Fame
2- When Ms. Pellegrini speaks of Judy, you can sense the true affection she had for her.
So many horrible lies are told about how the other performers "hated" and "were jealous" of Judy, but the fact is that she enchanted everyone she met. The only people who said bad things about her-- and there were not many who did-- were jealous of her talent.
You can indeed!
What a sweet lady.
She's right, no one can ever sing rainbow like Judy. I don't even want to hear any other version. Like Lorna Luft once said: That song truly belongs to my mother. Amen.
A movie that will never lose its charm and appeal. Margaret Pellegrini seems like such a lovely lady.
It lost its charm and appeal after getting exposed for abusing Judy Garland.
@@XoXoG Disagree. Judy Garland did have to live by strict rules, by it doesn't detract from the charm, joy and nostalgia of the movie.
Hi William! I met Margaret and visited with her several times at Judy fests, a very nice person! All the Munchkins I met were vibrant and entertaining people to all. Her grand daughter traveled with her. She would tour the circuit and was a major attraction. It was interesting that when I happened to be visiting with her a man approached with old photos of various pictures of Munchkins she knew. She had amazing recall and knew a lot. She answered the questions previously unknown about the photos he had of Munchkins and their performing careers before and after the movie was made. It was really surreal to be with several Munchkins on break all in costume when we all had coffee and treats together at a major Oz fest. I sat at Margaret's table at the final breakfast for one of the big Oz fests. The breakfast was packed. Several Munchkins were there. Margaret and two others rallied together at the end of the meal. They were so small others could accidentally in a packed crowd bump into them etc. For protection all three locked arms and disappeared into the mass of people. I had dinner with Carl Slover. He said when he traveled to the US from his native Germany to be in the film he was, I think he said, 9 yrs old, 2 feet tall, and the smallest person on earth! I didn't bother him with conventional questions... but he loved talking about his experiences and traveling with a county fair company after the movie. Also his sister in Germany had just died, hit by a street car. Margaret said she was at a state fair somewhere when they approached her about being in the movie. She lived in Arizona at the time I knew her and traveled all over the US to events. She probably went to other countries too, but not sure. She was very intelligent and no facade at all, a genuine unique person! Carl too, and the others I knew, Jerry Maren and his wife, Carl Swenson and his wife!
@@mwj5368 Thanks for your insightful and courteous reply.
I met her some time back. I was working at Banner Thunderbird Hospital. I remember walking into her room as her RN was doing an intake on her. I stood there and just listened to her. I said " You sound like a Munchkin!" She said "I am!!!"...came back after shift and chatted with her. What a very sweet land. She still wore the watch given to all on the set. It was Timex's first logo watch....Dorothy and Toto. I will never forget her. She gave me an autographed pic...signed.
You told a dwarf they sound like a munchkin? Damn. Rude af. Lmao!
@@audreymai2773 Exactly the same thought I had. smh
she's such a sweet lady!
She is right, there will never be another wizard of oz like this one. A sweet and smart lady.
I live in the same Neighborhood as Mrs. Pellegrini and she is still aCelebrity. She is one of only 3 Rema\ining Little People (Munchkoins) that is still Alive from the Movie . (One of her Roles, she wore a Flower Pot Hat and was just a Young Teenager) She is Loved by all.
She is such a sweet and darling lady. So happy for her that she got to be a part of something that big and had wonderful memories of it!

No movie can compare to "The Wizard of Oz". Timeless classic.

i remember in a talk show she said that dress she`s wearing is a reproduction and the one in the film is in a museum.
I favorite movie.
What a beautiful person. I had no idea she lived in Glendale. That is so neat that the neighbors would bring children and grandchildren over to meet her. My condolences to her family.

I remember meeting her when I was seven in the wizard of oz!!
Beautiful memories for her ❤
wow such good interview margaret seems so astonishingly sharp
omg she is so cool
That would be the scarriest thing ever to have to be in that movie. It would be like the inner workings of a bad acid trip.
We did a play at the Cumberland county playhouse on crossviple tn and i was a munchkin and the director weslie webster named the munchkins after people from the orgiinal movie who played munchkins and I was her Margaret funny
GREAT!!
@jss1591 please, do tell about your meeting. Margaret Pelligrini is 86 today. It would be nice to know that she's safe of sound and all that. Every year we keep losing each and everyone of our connectors to the past

💙🌼🪴
Not gonna lie to u I wanted to meet them in person but when I realized that this was back in 1939 and the characters had died in real life ( btw I love ur grandmother she is sweet ) I cried because I wanted to meet them real bad but then again this was in 1939 so yeah my favorite character was the tin man
Three of the munchkins girls Kids are alive
Priscilla montgomery Age 94 Born in 1929
Valerie lee Shepard Age 92 Born in 1931
Janet comerford Age 92
Born in 1931
And these are the only munchkins alive but since they where uncredited many people thinks everyone in the movie died
Then there Is caren Marsh doll as Judy garland's stand Age 104
Born in 1919
And lastly other ones not credited
Betty Ann bruno as a munchkin died in 2023 Age 91 Born in 1931
And another
munchkin kid that died in 2022 Age 91 Born in 1931
Then we have Adriana casselotti as the voice of art fhour rou romeo died in 1997 Age 80
And was born in 1916
Lastly Terry the dog as toto died in 1945 Age 11 and Born in 1933
And yeah 4 of them are alive
Just to reiterate a comment below..Margaret is indeed wearing a replica garment of what she was wearing in the wizard of oz
All of the Munchkins had nothing but nice things to say about Judy Garland. I guess Jerry Maron is the only one left now.
That is one movie Hollywonk can not remake without it sucking big time.
She are the girl with the dog in “The Wizard of Oz” are she??
What year was this filmed?
I can't believe she remembers judy garland same with Mickey Rooney angela linsbury and Margaret o'brien.
Which Munchkin did she play?
@jss1591 Lucky!!!
Looks like Nancy Palosi without make up.
i like to imagine Shirley Temple singing 'somewhere over the rainbow' and I think she would have been darling and more befitting the correct age of the character.
She did not have the voice for it.
She was no Judy Garland voice, true! But she would have been alright I think, making the songs more child-like. And I don't think they would have had to have strapped her chest down or whatever. Just a whimsey.
oh
oh my god - they shrunk The Queen Mother
I feel bad they prob forced her to say good things about them ... They treated the munchkins horrible
I would've liked to have heard her thoughts on how Judy was allegedly molested on set by other little people. 'Not blaming her, just would've thought she'd known something about it.
No that was fake news did by her husband
She’s darling ...!!!!!
The Wizzard of Munchkin land ...”!!!!!
They should have made A film ...one especially
Just about the munchkins and their story ...!!!
How did they just pop in there ... where did they come from ... how did they make it to OZ ..????
With Judy and Glenda and the bad witch and OZ and the three friends uncles if Dorthy and flying monkeys still in the story ..!!! But less violence ...
The new Oz made with the wicked witch being theadora turned into the witch was very scary for lil children ..!! Very violent ..!! Not cute or innocent at all .? Whoever is n m along these new films and movies .. cgis .. computer green screen etc... effects are all cool ... but a little violent and over done a bit ... not enough innocence ... take out some of the scary computer animation shit .,!!!
She’s soo cute ... this little person !!! Is she still alive
Today ...???? I’d like to see her if she is ...!!!!
Ik what you did
Is that the wizard from wizard of oz?
So she didn't know about the sexual abuse by the male munchkins?
I heard they constantly sexually harassed Judy.
Is that Judy
Judy died in 1969 when she was 47
is Judy garland this woman cause I don't know I'm new to this
Judy garland died at age 47 cause of the drugs
No its not Judy
Denise Ramirez judy garlands dauhter i think
xGadez GT XD
xGadez p This woman was one of the last surviving Munchkin actors from.1939 when The Wizard of OZ was filmed. Judy Garland's original name was Francis Gumm. Her daughter is named Liza Minelli. She too is a singer and actor.
Have you ever heard Eva Cassidy sing Over the Rainbow ? If not, please look it up here on RUclips, it's magical...
