Talkboxes, Vocoders, and Auto-Tune: A History of Voice Alteration
From Peter Frampton to Daft Punk, artists have been finding ways to alter vocals since the birth of pop music. But where did it all start and how did we get to where we are today?
The human voice is the world's oldest instrument and in terms of tone and distinction, it's unparalleled. But devices like the talkbox, vocoder and auto-tune have changed the way musicians think about the voice.

I graduated from high school in the mid '80s. The first vocoder tune I remember hearing on the radio was Mr Blue Sky by Electric Light Orchestra when I was in 5th grade. Then Dennis DeYoung of Styx got his hands on one and created a monster named Mr Roboto when I was in 10th grade.
'A History of Voice Alteration' without audio of the different techniques and artists using them?
Impressive explanation!
Thanks for making this video but please let us hear the effects! Do you have audio to go with these video clips? Even if it's only available for a few clips, that's better than none!
I like how the Daft Punk's One More Time is playing on the background all the video 👌
