This is one of those rare instant classics that do not age. The vocals, instrumentation, production, and atmosphere, all work together like a Swiss watch movement. If anything was added or deleted, it would be ruined. That is the definition of perfection!

She had my heart as a teenager in the 80s and I still find her to be one of the most remarkable singer/songwriter/performers of all-time. There has never been anyone else like her. Ever. She's a goddess and her lyrics are pure poetry.
For me, it was Linda Ronstadt. The first time I ever remember anything going on below the beltline was lovely Linda. I was only like 8 or 9 and I was terrified when things began to "happen", as I thought the condition to be permanent. I even began the logistics of how I was going to have to stand on my head to urinate for the rest of my life....

This is a fu*king masterpiece. How the fu*k did this tune stay under the radar for so long? It could've been made by Siouxsie and the Banshees yesterday, it still sound's that good. Catchy as fu*k.
This came out while I was away in Germany in October 1985 so I hardly heard it at the time,which was a pity. The sound which kicks in at 0:24 reminds me a bit of a wind-up wooden clock we had on the mantelpiece at home,especially when my dad decided to tinker with it.
I have been fascinated by Pompeii and Herculaneum ever since my dad bought a National Geographic documentary about it many years ago (back in the late 80s). One can only imagine the horror and terror those poor people felt in their final moments.

This song is so amazing, that I discovered something very curious: in 2018 I heard it after many years, but the memory came to me of having heard it on a car trip, a long time ago. One day I told my mother this, I showed this song, and she remembered that when I was only 2 years old my father, who died in 2008, had a cassette tape with this song...yes, it was in the subconscious! That's why I love this song!
That's so crazy when that happens, one time I "discovered" a song called six months in a leaky boat by split enz and was absolutely in love with it (and still am) and I felt like it sounded oddly familiar, then when I showed my dad he told me he used to play a wiggles CD with a cover of that song on it all the time when I was little and that was apparently my favorite song on it, and now I can distinctly remember listening to it when I was in the bath as a kid, so trippy

I knew of the group but never remembered hearing this song. My mom used to sing this chorus at random and I never knew what it was until maybe a week ago and now I have played this bop on repeat since.
Some people can remember snippets of information from as young as 3 (or even younger). I can remember sitting in a high chair at my birthday, and also when my little sister was born (I was 3).
Goodness, we knew music was great then but, somehow, I keep finding these musical gems and think how fortunate we are to hear pure talent that never fades even over decades....long may it last!

Turned onto Siouxsie so many years ago - VERY glad I found them. They are so incredibly under-rated - POWERFUL vocals, intelligent mixing, simple yet highly complex, and evolved. Many years later at 52, I'm still in awe of this musical mastery. Some of these songs are simply timeless masterpieces.

I was working at an adolescent girls group hone where all the girls were heavily into rap. They used to call me Earth Muffin because I work Doc Martin's and Birkenstocks. It was a somewhat of a misnomer though, since I was more of an Alternative new wave chick. Anyway, they used to get kind of annoyed when I drove them around, because I played all my "weird" music. But Cities in Dust, especially the extended version, was universally loved and I was always asked to blast out on the van speakers. Just a testament to what a great song this is!

I still remember downloading this sing from a legal (as in paid version of Limewire) and listening to this song waaaaay too much. That's how I fell in love with Siouxsie and the Banshees. I then of course proceeded to try and listen to everything they created.
Budgie, dude. That guy is one of the most unsung drummers of his era. He should get way more props for his playing.

Eu espero que os brasileiros saibam que a letra e o video são uma referencia a destruição da cidade de Pompeia, ocorrida no anos de 79 DC, com a erupção do vulcão Vesúvio. As ruinas da cidade romana antiga de Pompeia são o sitio arqueológico mais famoso do mundo. Milhares de pessoas morreram de uma vez so e a cidade foi incrivelmente bem preservada pela petrificação da lava vulcânica, inclusive os cadáveres.

1986... Alabama Theatre... band called the “Raunch Hands” opened for them. I was completely blown off me feet when I heard “Cities in Dust” live. What a voice! What an absolute awesome show. Got the opportunity to meet Ms. Sioux in person and was gobsmacked. I’m 53 now and of all the concerts I have attended over the years, that one still stands as out one of the most memorable.
RIP Joshua Kunkle, we miss you more than words can ever express.
I was happy to hear this song used at the closing of a Marvelous Mrs. Maizel episode recently. Siouxsie Sioux's music is timeless.
