The length of time I've been listening to "Limelight" can be measured in decades, but this SOUNDCHECK still leaves me shaking my head in wonder at just how great a song it is, and the enormous talent Rush was.
No better band to ever grace a stage. Even as Geddy's voice started to flag as he aged, the band still sounded so remarkably tight. For nearly 50 years they blessed us with some of the most engaging, technically brilliant and lyrically poignant music in the rock/prog canon. Truly, giants who walked the earth.
I feel you. Don't really remember a time without Rush. I lived in Maine in the 70's and everyone knew who they were. By the time I moved to Maryland they were still a little underground (little played on the Radio) but we passed cassettes around and were a little proud to be Rush fans compared to what others were listening to. Then Moving Pictures came out and all of a sudden we were accepted by the mainstream. Just seemed like every few years Rush would reinvent themselves marking periods of time as I made my way through life. That will be sorely missed.
Just made an Instagram for the channel so if you want to see behind the scenes clips of how I do these remasters, and lots of very cool Rush stuff, drop a follow! In case this channel ever goes down, that's where you can find me - instagram.com/stickhitsyt Just an FYI for anyone that isn't familiar with soundchecks (or any new Rush fans that haven't heard Limelight before and are wondering why there are three word verses in the song.. lol) - Geddy is skipping most of the lyrics, as he was being careful to not overwork his voice during an ambitious tour featuring a three hour show every second night, not to mention he was about to enter his 60s! And, since it's a soundcheck the engineer only needs to hear some of the vocals to make the necessary adjustments at the mixing console, there might have been another song or two with easier vocal parts that he sang all the way through. Edit: Crazy how many views the last few uploads have been getting during just the first few hours, so happy that these live treasures are finally getting the attention that Rush deserves! Thanks algorithm!
Yep! It's generally a good idea to mark during a soundcheck. What's impressive (to me anyway) is how tight it all is without even any lyrics to keep things on track.
The focus here is mostly on other things, they weren't rehearsing for performance aspects but instead checking cameras, lights, video etc. Most musicians can play the song through without any accompaniment. When I record covers I often play the drums first without even a metronome and certainly no lyrical helpers.
Neil playing note for note even at soundcheck. Technically they never had to really soundcheck at all because they were on the same pre-set in-ear system night after night and front of house could easily dial it in with prerecorded tracks but these guys always wanted to play shows “concise but loose” as Neil once said. So they sound checked every show no matter what. Best band ever.
Neil's doing exactly what he should be doing, playing at gig-level. Playing in bands myself, I despair at people who phone it in during soundchecks. Singers are a different category. Myself on drums, at that point in the afternoon I'm stiff as a board from the travel and setup, but I play near enough at gig level as I can, not just to give the soundman an accurate picture of the kit, but also to see how the stage floor/riser responds to the kit bouncing around (will pieces knock into each other, is something in danger of bouncing off the riser, are all the mic booms tight etc).
Wrong. Each venue is different and they need to adjust to the venue. And that's the same for every band. It's a long process that starts early in the day even before Neil, Geddy, and Alex come to the stage. This part of the soundcheck is the final one and the one that validates the full setup and allows for the last adjustments. This has nothing to do with the pre-set in-ear system. In fact, there are two main consoles. One in front of the stage to control the sound in the venue and the other one BEHIND the stage and controls the in-ear audio.
@D M Don't forget - Neil ditched the busses and planes during most of the domestic touring in latter years - and personally motorcycled venue to venue instead.
@@abandoned-mines-novascotia only partially true. He started and finished most days on his own bus with the bikes in a trailer. He went from the stage to the bus, slept on the bus, woke up and set off on the bike and Met back up with the tour in the following city. So he didn’t ditch the bud at all, he just added the bike.
Thanks Stickhits. I miss Neil every day. That is Rock N Roll Royalty. I wish I would have had the opportunity to thank them in person for all the great times they lifted me up. 👍😞
Luckily I think the boys realized how much of an impact they had on us by the end of R40! I got to at least thank Geddy at his book signing so i'm thankful for that. Still holding out hope for crossing paths with Alex... just waiting for someone to anonymously leak the necessary info to me XD
I also went to his book signing, and as a lifelong bass player, thanked him for inspiring me (& teaching me my intervals!) & now I get to write music for a living - he said "far out!" and gave me a fistbump with a big smile. It was amazing to get the opportunity to thank him. "One moment's high..."

This band was a legacy. I saw them 6 times. Nobody will ever create this sound and tech all over the world. Ever. The end of an era. Glad I was part of it. And there are 70 people behind what you see here. What a machine
These remasters you've been putting out lately have been absolutely fantastic and I highly commend your effort in rejuvanating recordings of Rush's live performances
Pretty amazing how those sound-checkers and all 5 people in there basically got a free personal concert. Could you imagine being in there while they’re playing songs when there’s not thousands of people crammed in there?
I've been a fan since '82, and for the last 10 years of their career, I didn't even care if they had an album to promote, I just wanted to see them live. Never missed a tour!! Greatest band ever!!
It still blows me away that that sound is coming from just three blokes playing! Incredible. I mean, just listen! Wow! Thanks for the beautiful music, lyrics and top quality playing. 👍🏻😁👍🏻
The six concerts I was able to see over a span of 30+ years will always be six of the best days of my life. Thank you, guys, for being the soundtrack of my life.

Rush is an awesome band they are super underrated and deserve more love. I love limelight the best because the guitar riff and solo is a banger. Alex Lifeson, Geddy Lee and Neil Pert are rock legands. Rest in piece Neil Pert
The guys can play in their sleep without missing a beat. Was so lucky to see these guys 20 times. Followed them up Florida with buddies a few times. Can’t be the professor is no longer with us. Best 3 man (person) ever
Damn. Why am I thinking an entire soundcheck as a show be the best thing to watch. I've seen a documentary on the stage set up before and it was intense.
Been playing this song for 25 years in my band. Coming out of the guitar solo & hitting that G# at the right time is still a hold on to your hat moment. These dudes could write!
What a massive sound and amazing band. Worked security for 2112 tour sat on the stage. We would take 3 shirts one to walk in with the security shirt and one for when the show started and we just wanted to blend back in and watch till the end when we had to change back into security shirts and turn those back...
Love the band, the lyrics, the sound, the style, the humor, the artwork, the meaning and depth. Rush, your live performances were eye-opening and awesome! Your music is 'Powerful!' and is reflected in the fans with a huge charge of energy. As a fan I have used that extra energy to develop my life and to this day as I listen the expansion continues. I did not know what I was getting into when I played the Rush CD in 1978, a huge thank you the journey! The license plate for the '68 Chevy Camaro RS I had for years was - RRRRUSH.
This is great footage! From my first RUSH show (10th row center) in 1981 to their final farewell, I've really enjoyed every moment, every CD, every DVD, every instance where I could watch or hear this band.
They sounded so good live. The skills are crazy good and they make odd time signatures look like child’s play. All masters at their instruments. But damn…that audio.
That was just awesome! Man do I miss those guys, especially The Professor. I kept thinking to myself the entire time, Geddy, save your voice for the show!
SO cool, with Rush you always get their best effort! Most bands never made past 5 years on the road and their music wasn't worth listening to, but these guys knew who put the food on their tables and they were truly grateful for it. Love them, miss them.
Favorite band of all time. Seen them so many times it feels like they should be coming back around. But we all know it's not happening. Thank you for 40 plus years of fantastic music. Miss you Neal....

You know legend when a band's sound check sounds better than most other band's concerts.
And when a band's soundcheck sounds better than most other bands in the studio? That's Rush ladies and gentlemen.
Absolutely!
Most definitely. Rush, especially.......😎👍🏻
Well said!
I know!
Hearing it clearly without crowd noise really makes me realize how much Alex's rich chords make the entire song.
For sure. 👌
Paid for 6 strings, might as well use 'em lol
I always believed Alex L. was an underrated guitarist who deserved more recognition! Neil Peart,RIP you are sorely missed!
So many little things he does that Make the songs what they are. That goes for all three of em. Pretty amazing group
YES! So true, he rings out those chords using them high strings and really gives it power.

Facts. Long live the holy trinity
Limelight hits right in the feels. Every. Single. Time.
eeewwww.
There’s something so beautiful and pure about this. Hearing the music and Geddy only singing part of it.
I was thinking exactly the same thing.
Knowing the clown Alex is I was almost hoping he would have taken over the singing.
Man. Listening to Rush since 1977 and haven't missed a show since 1984. And Its still heartbreaking and hard to get used to the fact that it's over.
Rush left an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of many.
